More 1084 weirdness

I am all for this 100%, like I said early on I’m not pointing fingers. I honestly want to figure out what’s going on. If it’s me then I want to know. But on the other hand I don't want to bend over and take one for the team so to speak. I honestly want to provide the best heat treating service I can to my customers. This involves being honest with ones self first and for most. I honestly do not think it is anything I have done but god forbid if it is then I sure as hell want to know about it. I have always had respect for people and company’s that stand up and own there issues and I’m trying to fallow in there footsteps. No one is perfect and I don’t think the majority of us expect others to be. But that does not mean we cant strive for perfection. Remember what we want is on the other side of hard.
Did it show anything when you etched it?

In my career i did a LOT of root cause analysis. Frankly, much of what that required was smoothing ruffled feathers, and assuring people we were not pointing fingers, but rather as a team trying to understand what was going on. Most of the time (90% or more) what people initially assumed what was going on was wrong. Data always wins the day (it is much more neutral tha an “i think” statement. ). Getting an elemental analysis may or may not yield anything definitive ... but if it does, we are a step ahead. Again, data is power (and is a less threatening influence over the supply chain)

I'm going with abductive reasoning / Occam's Razor on this one: mystery steel bought on ebay with no source or history to trace. I got $5 on it. Elemental analysis is the closest it will ever get to being proven correct.

Spoken like an honest man - and that has been my mantra for many years. While I like to be right, it's MUCH more important to me to find the right answer. In this case, I do think a case of bad metal is the problem.

Excellent!

I still don t understand , you put complete thermocouples inside oven or you drill hole in wall ? I have no idea how to do that .........

drill a small hole. Plug it with satanite or sairset when done.

Did you ever figure out what the deal was with this steel? Did you ever etch it? Really would like to know.

This is the fourth thread like this started by JT, it is very disappointing that the only testing done so far has been hrc. We talk about there being a problem but never get to a solution.
JT says he’s going to etch the blade and now won’t even acknowledge this thread.

There should be a chemical analysis of this material also.

Re. elemental analysis - I have not yet heard back from my lab contact. I am going to give it a few more days, then try another contact route. Likely she is just busy.

(Time inside a company is not the same as outside a company - it runs "slower" .... we need to be patient. This is a very good friend - contact will be made)

I am sorry Adam - was this directed at me? (Serious question...)

No, it was about how etching the blade seems to be in limbo.

I have know many super talented knifemakers and we are lucky to have Devin Thomas here among us answering questions. When it seems his advice on etching the blade is being ignored it just seems wrong.

Adam - I might be wrong here, but FWIW, here is my perspective. JT is working to get a business off the ground. At the risk of speaking for him, he is likely struggling/ working hard / losing sleep / to get his orders done. this does not mean he is ignoring Hoss's suggestions .... just that he has way too much too do. If he is able to etch, well, then good. If he is not able to etch, well, that does not mean that he ignored Hoss (who I do not know, But know of, and is not lightly brushed aside) .... but just means other stuff, which was quite realistically more important in the day-to-day, took priority.

There is time to work on this.. the blade JT has is not going anywhere and is not going to change is material structure magically overnight. Let me work to see if I can get the attention of my friend (who is BUSY) for an elemental analysis, then take it from there. I would set my sights on something like 4-6 months to try to get significantly more insight on this......

I think we're all taking this into account, or my reading of it shows everyone taking careful consideration of this. Devin mentioned this is his 4th thread like this where no answer's or tests besides HRC were done. Etching takes LESS time than any of the above testing, and says a lot about material composition. Element analysis is another good route to take, but etching it takes almost no time at all. Just the way i'm reading it, but i know JT has one of my orders - so i can pretend he is putting all his effort in getting those back to me ASAP ;)

JT was going to try and etch it 12 days ago and has not responded to Devin requests about etching until yesterday. It takes a few minutes and at least should be done.
