More Mayo/Buck info

From what I have been told (hope this is ok to share!!!! ) The first run is only going to be 2000 knives, so I would imagine they will be gone pretty fast (heck I am going to buy a bunch of them!)

So for us non-Buck collecter club folks, are you saying that it may be tough for us to get one? I've never had the pleasure of seeing, let alone holding a TNT, but I'm 99% sure I'd really like one.

If they're potentially going to go that fast, then odds are I'm looking at full retail if I manage to find a place to "pre-order", vs. seeing them show up at your regular online dealers (doubtful anyone in town would have one)?

Regards,
Cedric

It should be out everywhere, unless Buck decides to restrict where they offer it.

Cedric, and any others that may not be BCCI members, if you re-read my earlier post you will see that you are not left alone in the cold dark alley. You may still want to get in touch with Larry. I'm sure he will do what he can for you...

It is my understanding that any Buck Dealer can get them, including the ones on the net.

I'm sure you're right Tom!!! I also understand that the factory is not yet actually taking orders from their dealers for this knife yet. I do know dealers that are putting together a "waiting list" type thing that once the factory does open the order book, they can order what they need for their "list"

BTW Tom - as a avid BUCK collector, and not knowing what kind of "paperwork" is going to come with this knife, would you be agreeable to "autograph" any certificates or warranty papers when these finally ship? I think it would be way cool to have your signature to go alone with "your" knife....  :D

$300 bucks (pun intended)!!! Why so much? And it's not a Talonite blade. OK SV30 is a good choice, but still. If you add an extra $100 for the talonite blade, like Camillus charges for the upgrade in the EDC, you are only a $100 or so off from a real hand made TNT from Tom. Without making a comparison to another knife in that price range (and you know what I'm talking about), all I have to say is, it better be VERY well made.

First off, $300 is the MSRP, not the street price. And this price is actually like half of the price that you would pay for a Mayo custom, if you had the right timing to be able to find one.

S30V is also an new expensive steel that works very well.

I think I read that S30V is actually less expensive than ATS-34/154CM, making it MUCH less expensive than Talonite. With Paul Bos' heat treat, these knives should be awesome!
$300 seems to be an excellent price point for this piece, if that is what it takes to maintain the quality. This will probably mean a street price of somewhere around $180-200, which would be a bargain if the production pieces look anywhere as nice as the prototype model photo.
I hope that Buck pays particular attention to the edge grind, making sure that they are even. Better yet, a polished convex edge grind would befit the heritage and quality of this piece! I have seen too many great production knives that have otherwise been excellently crafted, spoiled by a poor, uneven edge grind. This is because the edge is put on by hand and subject to the operator's skill. Hey, I would pay an extra $50 if you send these knives to Tom for sharpening!

S30V is nowhere near the price of talonite. At Alpha Knife Supply talonite is listed at $46.50 for a 1/8 x 2 x 3 inch piece. Alpha Knife doesn't carry stainless steel so at Sheffield supply 154cm lists at $52.90 for a 1/4 x 3 x 18 inch (I can't find anything smaller right now) and ats-34 is a similar price. None of the online store list S30V yet, but everything that I have read in magazines about it has said that it is only marginally more expensive.

Yes, timing is everything to getting an actual Mayo, but for the 3-inch bladed models $500 is about right.

And yes the picture looked nice, but like I said, it better be built VERY nice, not just look it.

No websites to preorder??? :( Thats one hell of a nice knife. I am vert suprised when I got a chance to look at the link above. I can't wait. This will acutally be my first Buck!! :)

Gorgeous knife, I'll have to get one sometime, good work Tom, and good work to the folks at Buck ;)

Re: S30, its about double the cost of ATS34, so its very expesive to buy. It is also a pain to work, the bar I'm cutting on at the moment has a nice hard spot in that apparently did'nt get annealed, if they anneal the material at all, I cant get my bandsaw to go through.

Sorry to digress from the thread, just FYI -- Charles

No way I'm gonna shell out 300 bucks, for a producton untried, untested knife! I'd much rather wait and see what the street price is after its release, plus see some opinions of em... Or if I could FIND one spend the $500 or so for a real TNT.

I must admit though, I sure looks nice!!:D

That looks great. $300 isn't bad at all for what you should be getting. Buck will undoubtedly have a winner on their hands.
These will sell like hotcakes.

Dcon67, if you can find a TNT for $500, you would be very very lucky.

A new, smallish drop point, if you buy them direct from Tom (at a show) are going for around $600.

Alright, that falls in line with what I have heard. If ATS-34 is about $50, twice that would put it at $100. I had a friend tell me it would cost him $90. Close enough.

im2smrt4u, look at the dimensions of the talonite vs. the cm154 in my earlier post. The cm154 is twice as thick at ¼ inch and it’s 18 inches long vs. 3 inches of talonite. Sorry for making it a little confusing, but I didn’t spend a lot of time looking for equivalent bar stock to compare. From what I have seen online buying one piece of steel a 1/8 x 2 x 3 inch piece of cm154 would be under $10. I would assume that Buck could buy in quantity and get a price that I couldn't. Who is your friend? I would like to sell them some steel.

Lets see..

S30v - pricing is more expensive than ATS-34. Also in the small quantity we are buying for this project, not much of a price break is there.. You have to buy 1000's of lbs to get good price breaks. Also.. S30V is not on a lot of shelves at the moment. And try finding a 2x4' sheet for it. Processing is much harder than ATS-34

Also the TI handles are not cheap. Your jaw would drop at how much per pair we are paying.
And the TI Liner, and the TI belt clip.

High end materials + low project volume make for more expensive parts therefore higher MSRP. MSRP will be between 280-300 USD, which would make street price $220-250.

These also have to be made one by one in our custom shop, no high speed processing here.

All in all, we have a good product at a decent price. And of course we are still squeezing every cost out of it that we can.

So same materials, hand built at 1/2 the price as a True Mayo.

Jeff
