Not the greatest of weather today but the pooches needed their walk so out we went.

The first wild edible I came across was some Miners Lettuce, they were the biggest I have seen them here and taste pretty good......

The next I stumbled across was some Common Camas, the bulbs from these were a very important food source for the first nation people and wars were fought over ownership of certain meadows......

P5050012.jpg

As with most plants you need to to dig the bulb up carefully or they will just break off beneath the ground, I guess they are best roasted or boiled but I tried this one raw and it tastes like rice crossed with potato....not great but ok !

The Tiny Terror tried to find me some more stuff to eat !

Another one I came across was this Chocolate Lily, these are quite rare, the bulbs were boiled or steamed and eaten by most Pacific Northwest people.....

Speaking of T.T she has now started following her big sis into the water more....

I stopped by to check on the progress of the Robins (unfortunately it now look like there is only one left !).......

This was the knife I took, my Bandicoot complete with a ferro rod borrowed from Pit Jr, till my new one comes from Stomper. Although I have a soft spot for this knife it sucks when it comes to wood shaping compared with my 3 customs !!!!!

As it was wet everywhere I figured it would be a good time to test out burning a Ranger band ( inner tube ), nobody seems to mention these any more ?

I was pretty impressed with how well it burned and would imagine it would be good to start your fire with until your Fatwood took hold !

Great stuff Pit.

That Chocolate lilly is pretty neat! I don't think we have them over here.

That 1 baby robin is probably the reason the other ones aren't there. Usually the strongest will push the others out of the nest...

Cheers Tony here is another pic I took of the Chocolate Lily, I often wonder if I'm barking up the wrong tree when I post Wild Edibles as not many people seem interested and I can't understand why ? You have far more chance of feeding yourself in a survival situation using edible plants that by trying to catch animals using snares and fig 4 traps etc !

I'm always interested in the wild edibles. One of the skills that is fading away in our times, which is a real shame. Thanks for sharing the pics, Pit.

You should train the TT to find wild edibles :p

Oh, no! Even we 'serial lurkers' enjoy the wild edibles discussions.:)

It doesn't get more 'back to nature' than that.

Pit, That Chocolate Lily is quite nice. I haven't seen any of those before. I was just out walking around and saw a large amount of green plants growing, creating a blanket of green.

Not sure what this is???? Any ideas?

Wild edibles rock. It's free food from Mother Nature's pantry, and I love a good pantry raid.

It's interesting that while many of the plants you guys show are not found out here on the West coast, some others are. Miner's lettuce, for instance: I used to see it often. I need to get out more and look for edible plants. This forum is actually inspiring in that regard.

Hey pitdog, I think one of the problems is a lot of wild plant food is locale based. A lot of your plants, don't grow here, for example, whereas a fig 4 is the same in B.C. as it is in New Zealand. Another thing is it takes you a lot longer to learn wild plant foods than it does to learn how to survival trap.

As far as having a better chance of feeding yourself with plant life than traps and snares, a lot of plant food is seasonal, bunnies are not. Also most plant food is nutrient deficient especially when it comes to complete protein and fat, compared to animal based food.

There's one other thing, I think some guys think it's less than macho, learning how to identify wild flowers etc. What do you think?

My 2 cents.

Ya only get bunnies at Easter eh ?:D

I just think about the survivor man shows and it's very rare when his traps actually catch anything so he usually resorts to a handfull of berries or other wild edibles !

If he caught too many things, his in-box would be full of hate mail from Toronto!!!! :(

I think part of the animal/plant issue is that nobody has a hard time identifying a bunny and you won't die if you eat a different colored squirrel (like you can with camas).:D
