Hey Billy, Don't have a lot to show for today. Its been a time consuming day cutting the bar up and getting all those little pieces to fit together ready to forge weld but I did get that done. here's a couple pictures of todays progress.

all the tiles tack welded tgether ready to forge weld.

Here's the tiles all welded up into a solid bar, I then did 3 normalizing cycles using my oven and the bar is now slowly cooling in the oven over night. Its been a long process getting to this point, I'm glad tomorrow I can clean up the bar and start grinding out the dagger blade.

Thanks for looking,

Bill

This is looking really good Bill. I am looking forward to seeing the work. Going to be one lucky customer.

Looks good Bill what is the material under the tiles that you welded to just curious because iam mosaic Damascus stupid! LOL I think iam going to have to make a trip and see this thing up close.:D;)

Thanks guys,

Billy there's a thin piece of junk stainless under the tiles between the tiles and a bar of 1/4" mild steel, this will keep the tiles from welding to the mild steel and give the tiles plenty of support, if it had been a shorter blade I wouldn't have done anything except tack weld the tiles together and then forge welded, but being a long blade I wanted more support.

Here's an update of what got accomplished today. Starting to show some progress now.

Here's the mosaic bar after its been normalized and cleaned up, now I will lay out the blade, profile and grind in the bevels, and get it ready to heat treat.

Starting to grind in the bevels

Here's the blade, ground then hand sanded to 400 grit so I could get all the deep grinding scratches out and now its ready for heat treating, its been a long day getting everything nice and lined up so tomorrow I'll heat treat it.

Thanks everyone for looking and the comments.

I'll be following this thread closely:thumbup:
It's looking really good, Bill

Particularly interesting observing your creating this damascus after seeing your "stars" damascus blade on the big bowie at AG's show.

Here's another update on what was done today.

First off I fired up the oven and heat treated the dagger blade, here its going into the quench oil.
Tquilliondagger21.jpg

After the blade cooled it was placed in my tempering oven for 3 - 1 1/2 tempering cycles, so while I was waiting on that I cut some more W tiles to be welded up for the guard, these will be the guard after there forge welded together.
Tquilliondagger22.jpg

Here I also cut 2 piece of the W patter and turned them so the W's would be exposed outward, this will make the spacer and the pommel.
Tquilliondagger22A.jpg

Here's the 2 halves welded and forged somewhat round. I forgot (senior moment) to get a picture of the W pieces welded into a bar for the guard, but I did get that accomplished also, so tomorrow I will clean up the blade and start the guard.

Thanks again for all the comments and for looking,

Bill

I had a pretty good day today, everythings starting to findly come together.
So after I got the blade cleaned up from heat treatment and sanded to 1500 grit, I started in on the guard.

Here I've drilled the mosaic bar to file out the tang slot.
Tquilliondagger23.jpg

Here the slots been filed in and fitted to the dagger, then I layed out the guard shape.
Tquilliondagger24.jpg

Here it is shaped and sanded to 600 grit, ready to bend.
Tquilliondagger25.jpg

Here the guard is in my bending jig, time to heat it up with the torch.
Tquilliondagger26.jpg

here it is bent to shape, now I need to cut the quills off and finish sand.
Tquilliondagger27.jpg

And here it is all cleaned up and sanded to 1500 grit.
Tquilliondagger28.jpg

and to think yesterday, it looked like this.

I'm hoping to get the spacer and pommel turned and finished tomorrow.

Thanks for looking,

Bill

Every time I watch one of these threads, I am seriously impressed. To go from a chunk of scrap iron looking stuff to a beautiful knife or gun is amazing!

Here's another update of what I accomplished this weekend.
I know I posted this first picture earlier but I just wanted to show what I started with to make the spacer and pommel out of.
Tquilliondagger29.jpg

Here's the spacer turned and sanded to 1500 grit in my wood lathe, I don't have a metal lathe so I used it with files.
Tquilliondagger30.jpg

Heres the pommel all cleaned up also sanded to 1500 grit, the piece of althread is just there so I can handle it better, it will be removed and the pommel will thread onto the tang.
Tquilliondagger31.jpg

Now that I have the spacer and pommel finished its time to start in on the handle, heres a picture of the piece of elephant ivory to start with.
Tquilliondagger32.jpg

Here it is turned and sanded to 1500 grit. Next is to lay out for the flutes and wire inlay.
Tquilliondagger33.jpg

Here's the ivory laid out for the fluting.
Tquilliondagger34.jpg

I will start that tomorrow, working on this ivory makes me nervous so I need to regroup my nevres before I start filing.

Thanks for lookin,

Bill
