The pommel is looking good Bill. I also will be anxious to see the fluting progress.

That is an interesing jig for holding the ivory for fluting.

Thanks again,
Peter

Thank you everyone for the comments, I'm sorry I didn't take several pictures of the fluting, but I got so envolved triing to keep everything straight amd uniform I actually forgot about the camera. Its been a long day but one I'm glad is over with. I just need a little more clean up in the morning then I will put on the twisted wire.
Peter, the jig is just for holding the ivory so it can be turned and marked, after its laid out its taken from the jig with a rod down the center and held in a bench vise while filing.
I purchased the DVD " The Quillion of Quality" by Jerome Anders a couple years ago and Jeromes instruction helped me a great deal, I would recommend it to anyone that has never made a fluted quillion dagger before, he offers several helpful hints and suggestions.

Here's where I was first rough cutting in the flutes with a round file, I actually cut a shallow groove on the lines with a 3 corner file first then followed up with the round file, that way I had a channel to help keep the round file straight, probably not necessary but it helped me feel more comfortable.

Here's 2 different angles showing it with the flutes and wire channels cut in.

Thanks for looking, with a little luck I'll get the wires on tomorrow and try to get this piece put together on Wednesday. Then I need to start a damascus sheath for it.

Bill

always wondered about how the fluting was done:thumbup:

Wow Bill you are really going all out on this one. A Damascus sheath?? I am assuming you are talking about a throat and tip, or are we talking about a full damascus sheath?

It is really great watching this story unfold and each chapter keeps getting better. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Brian

Hello Brian, its going to get a simple damascus sheath. Working on it, is when I really wish I had a surface grinder.

here's what was accomplished today.

The ivory ends were drill to accept and hold the wire ends.

heres the handle with the silver wires all twisted and ready to be put in place.

Thanks for looking,

Bill,

That is very nice. I also have wondered how fluting was done, especially on those tapers.
Its a lot simpler than I thought it would be. But not easy I'm sure.
Thanks, Greg

Thanks everyone for the great comments along the way, I'm glad this piece is almost completed, I'm looking forward to starting the sheath.

Greg, No its not hard and I'm sure its a lot easier for others then it is for me, this is the fourth dagger I've made with flutes and wire inlay and it just takes patience, I'd say the most nerve racking part for me was putting that file to a piece of high dollar ivory and praying I don't screw it up. :D

Bill

WoW. The Handle process is amazing Bill!! a ton of hand filing to get that done. Awesome!!

This knife is looking great!!!

Thanks for making the great WIP thread.

I can't wait to see the damascus etched.

Got her finished today and here it is,

OAL- 15 1/2" with a 10 1/4" blade. .999 silver wire and elephant ivory.
