Mossberg Shotguns

I like both firearms. However, the Mossberg i am looking at has no shoulder stock on it so thats why i am leaning to the remington 870. but we will see. thanks for all the information. After looking at Rat's Daly, I might look at one of those! That thing looks just like a stoeger and a benelli.

My home defense shotgun is a Mossberg Persuader. I can not remember the # designation. I have practiced a lot with it in the past. I used to go to a range in CT, and shoot every weekend! I didn't shhot the shotgun every weekend, but I shot it alot, so I could get good at shooting it, before I might NEED to shoot it.

Mike, I was just wanting to get a Home Defense weapon and I thought the pictured shotgun above would be a good ticket... I am also looking at the Remington 870. It has good reviews as well. Mossberg is the company that got the military's contract, so THAT says something.

Yeah, it does. It says that the military gave to the contract to the lowest bidder. It doesn't mean they got the best, only the cheapest. :thumbdn:

I hunted with a Mossberg 590 for one season. It was the single worst shotgun I have ever used. It constantly jammed at the just the wrong moment and was very difficult to field strip when the weather was cold. The foregrip was constantly coming loose and the firing pin busted on more than one occassion. I shouldn't have to buy 3 firing pins in one hunting season.

I got rid of it (destroyed it). I then got a Rem 870 and I never looked back.

I have an Ithica Model 37 Featherlight, and it is a sweet shotgun. Many people agree that it's the smoothest pumping shotgun out there.

If you see one of those, it also might be worth a look.

i have a mossberg 500 and its a fine gun i also have a rem 870. the 870 is the best in my opinion and you will never have a problem with it but if you want somthing affordable get the 500

I have two Mossbergs, 500 and 590. I have had zero problems with both but I did replace that cheap plastic safety with a metal one. My recommendation would be to check out both Mossberg and Remington shotguns at your local gun shop. See what fits you best in terms of ergos, location of safety, etc. Both will serve you well. I do own one Remington 870 and I love it :) There's nothing wrong with own both a Remington and Mossberg shotgun.

First of all, the Mossberg that got the contract was the 590-A1, not the standard model.

I am curious, Ken, if you had Mossberg Customer Service go over it?

While I am not crazy about their service, I find MY 590 to be vastly superior to any Remington that I have ever shot, but it is not smoother.

I have had one jam, changed the follower to orange plastic, and have had no further problems. It is weighted correctly for me, and once Hans Vang did his massaging, is accurate as all getout. I replaced the "cheap plastic safety" on mine as well, I had a500 20ga. once where the safety lever cracked.

Understand me though, I have never taken it hunting, but have done more than a few "tactical" courses at the range, and it was dependable for me.

Recently purchased a Benelli M3-Super 90 to compare it to.:D

I had a 590 back in 03 or 04. pisser gun. i think it jammed once in like 3000 rounds. I used to go shoot it two or three times a week. i can't compare it with other ones since i've only shot the 500 and 590. I shot a pistol grip (stockless) and a pistol grip/stock combo, and both sucked. The PG seems useless on everything but a breach gun. as to the 500/590s being good guns, i haven't heard any complaints, and i have none. it depends on what you're using it for.

I was told to take it ot a certified Mossberg gunsmith which I did. The firing pin problem was the result of improperly harden pins (3x though had me skeptical that it wasn't a deeper problem). The loose grip was the result of improperly milled rails. They were slightly larger in thickness on the left than the right. Maybe I got a lemon or maybe it was just that run of 590's. Either way my troubles turned me off to the Mossbergs.

OK so Mossberg was the lowest bidder. I havent heard anything negative from any of the units attached to the 248th MP unit i am starting to drill with on the SMP path I am on. I like both. I think both are good, I would only be on viable grounds to truly comment after firing and testing both. thanks for the help to everyone.

I have both the Mossberg and 870. I bought the Mossberg for home defense only. I have the full length stock, not the pistol grip so you can use it for something besides h.d. You can't beat the price and if you want just for protecting you house, you cannot go wrong with it. If you want a gun for hunting and h.d. then go with the 870.

Edited - I asked a question about shotguns but the question was off topic from the original posters question. Just didn't want to step on Reconseed's thread. Sorry.

Soren, how many rounds have you put down range with your 500? Just out of curiosity.

Thomason, no worries man.. This isnt MY thread. Its everyone's thread that contributes. If any way you can get helpful advice from it, by all means, do so. If i were on grounds to comment on your question i would have but i am not familar with that kind of gun.. sorry man

Same here...got it at a gun show and take it to the range often. Awesome gun, has never failed or jammed. I highly recommend it.

as did I... I've only put about 100 rounds through it thus far but so far its a breeze. I also had no issues aiming without a stock. the very first time i used it, I set a milk jug about 15 yards down the range, and smacked it with all 8 rounds in the magazine in rapid succession, pushing it another 15 yards downrange. I was shooting a light birdshot, but I'm confident I'd be able to aim fine at a maximum of what, 6 or 8 yards in my house?

and man the sound of that pump action... almost makes it unnecessary to keep it loaded....:)
