Most Inexpensive Trustworthy Folding Knife?

For absolute cheapest I would trust, I would go with an Opinel. But honestly I think the best mindset would be to not trust any folder.

Fair enough choice bud. The only thing that irritates me about Opinels is their tendency for the wood to swell in damp weather, making it brutal to open or close. Oiling the pivot point didn't seem to help.

Upnorth, a fellow forum recommended Johnson paste floor wax. Slather the joint and melt in with a heat gun. Really works well

He was referring to Cold Steel's lock strength and he's correct. Even the diehard haters know the Tri-Ad lock is the strongest, most reliable lock made.

And there are still Voyagers out there in AUS8 being dumped for the steel change overs. Pretty good bargains, but no one is forced to buy anything that doesn't tickle their toe nails.

Cold Steel Kudu. It only cost $6.49, and is the most thuggish knife I own. So I guess ok for self-defense, although I subscribe to the school that considers knives just about useless for that purpose.

The one time I did have a self-defense situation (an intruder at 3 am) I was fortunate to resolve it with fisticuffs. Even though that made me a hero to my date (now my wife) she is still a little pissed that I didn't resort to the 7" Bridell cleaver that was hanging on a convenient pegboard. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

SAK. Known to have saved lives.

What he said^^^

A SAK is not just a knife, but a saw, awl, scraper, small pry tool, can opener for scavenged can goods.

If I need a self defense tool, I'll use that other thing.

What is the most inexpensive folding knife that you would trust your life with in a survival or self defense situation?

I'm talking about the cheapest folder with regards to cost that you would trust not to fail in an emergency?

Just curious what you all think :)

Mine would be a CRKT M16-13T

I wouldn't put my life in the hands of knife that I had my doubts about. I'd really prefer my HK USP .45acp over any knife.

Also used as an outback amputation tool.

Shudder.

Didn't that kid who got stuck in Utah use a Leatherman?

Did you ever read about the guy (I think he was a pastor) who got his leg stuck in between 2 boulders in an unstable talus field in the Wind Rivers. He left behind a heart wrenching diary as he succumbed to exposure...

Shudder.

Henry Beige, I shudder at your story too. Different reasons.

How interesting. Thank you. I have some conservators wax on hand, which I may try. This wax is used in museums for preservation, and it is the final stage when I preserve fur trade iron relics.

He said it wasn't a Leatherman he used in Utah. Cheap multitool or faux SAK.

A man in a New Zealand quake was recued after having his leg amputated with a SAK.

But at least when he got around to amputating, there was no feeling left in the pinned arm. And one of the first things he did after recovery was buy a Leatherman Wave. I saw a photograph of him standing on an outcropping with one arm missing and the Wave on his belt That's a tough way to learn not to cheap out on survival gear. Or to not tell anyone where you are going.
