As soon as I saw this thread I knew I'd see Charlies stuff in here. The third picture down is still the meanest looking folder I have ever seen. It has the same affect as a head butt in a fight... It makes the opposing person thing what have I just got myself into!?

Lenny, you're alright. I'd drink with you.

Likewise, I retract my previous comment, I DO like you, lets drink.

... till somebody gets hurt. Where's the balance? Ideally, we work it that at the ballot box and it's the subversion of that process that scares more than regulation itself. Let's just say that I'm with Eisenhower on this. Fear the rise of the military industrial complex (and big business in general).

This indeed a difficult balance. My thoughts are this: If I knew for a fact that it would prevent just one person from getting hurt or reduce it by one in the long run, I would turn in all my weapons in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I know that is not the case based on geographic crimes statistics. In fact, I am of the opinion that me turning in weapons will result in MORE people hurt.

I absolutely love this particular posturing of the Civilian for pics. It looks so nasty standing up. It get's my vote for the most intimidating.

I have almost bought this knife on more than a dozen occasions. It's just so daggum wide in the pocket, and would be a perfect candidate for a wave "screw in catch" like the P'Kal.

Maybe it's because I've been around knives the majority of my life but the majority of these just look silly and pointless to me, not intimedating.... Particularly the civilian, what it's purpose? As for the knives the bad guys use in The movies I have the same opinion they all look like something out of a toys r us costume isle.

If you actually want an answer, insulting the choice of knife of everyone in the thread is an odd way to get it.

The Civilian is designed to (da da da da) cut stuff.
In particular, people.
Designed for a law enforcement agency, actually, one where a gun would look too "coppish".

Greetings Spencer T., you asked: "Particularly the civilian, what it's purpose?".
It was designed by Spyderco as a knife to be used by a particular group of Law Enforcement agents, to intently cut flesh and inflict a devastating wound.
When first released, it was only made available to Law Enforcement personnel and proof of credentials were required for purchase.

It is not for usage around the farm, factory floor, or the warehouse, in fact doing so will void the warranty of the knife as stated in text
in the paperwork that comes with the knife from Spyderco.

Many friends (non law enforcement) that I have shown my Civilian to, don't even want to hold it as they find it a bit too intim"i"dating.

Short of someone coming at you with a buzz saw, there are some people that will find none of the knives shown in this thread to be intim"i"dating.

Or the mugger might think "hey, why take the chance?" and shoot the one with the visible pocket sword dead on the spot. No warnings, no mercy, a corpse does not resist and is easy to loot. Just saying... Things won't necessarily follow the course you predicted.

I don't think I would pull out a 2 inch folder either in a mugging scenario. A mugger wants whatever money you have on you at the time. For that petty amount of cash I will not risk getting injured. I'd much rather throw them the 20 or 50 bucks I have in a money clip and be done with it. YMMV.

Problem is these days is most of these yokels will shoot you anyway just for gp.

^^^ haha we have a running joke in my family, when someone gets a new knife (especially if it's big or "intimidating") we say it's our cheese slicing knife.
