Great Question, Dennis.

I will gladly answer this, without hesitation- {"Sebenza". Thanks for asking!

I would say Microtech knives are pretty over-rated.

I don't think the Sebenza is over rated but I do think it's talked about way too much on the forums.

the Sebenza is only over-rated taking the price into account. It's a great knife, but it's a production knife. For about $150-175 it would be the greatest thing since sliced bread. I heard Chris tell a gentleman at the NY Show in November that he doesnt make any of them anymore,he just runs the company.
So why would I pay all that money for his name on my knife?
Please, no flames on this-this is just my opinion. As I stated, it is a great knife, just way overpriced to me.

Microtech

I don't know how somebody can complain about spending $325 when you see some of the prices of the MT's.

Well I'am not sure I have an opinion about a particular knife, but I think Liner locks in general at one time were definetly overated.Later,RS

REKAT Pioneer and Carnivour....clunky, gritty, shoddy fit and finish, and over-priced. I bought a Pioneer and sent it back.
Handled a Carnivour at a show - no better,
just heavier. Perhaps I've only handled
leamons, but it seems strange that most (not
all) of the forumites who buy them must
perform surgery or cycle 1000x's to become
satisfied with the knife.

Well I won't say the Sebenza is over-rated, but it's certainly talked about in a deity status. I own a CR Project One so I am a fan. And I have handled several Sebenzas. They are a magnatude above both my BM and Spyderco knives in quality. However I can not think of anything they can do better then the ones I have already.
As for being over-rated, I'd say it's BM. And I have to draw this not from people I see here in the forums, but from people I work with. Lot's of different knives to be seen. Many think BM is just flat out awsome. Yet, I've heard more problems about thier knives then anyone. Even my own show the lack of quality, though I seem to have been blessed with reliable knives. Benchmade has some great knife designs. They just need to follow thm with great knives.

The AFCK, but I carry it everyday 'cause I like it--a lot. It looks good, it feels good, it walks, talks, cleans my squirrels and cooks my breakfast. But probably overrated.
smile.gif
Both my AFCK and Axis required serious blade reprofiling. And of course, there's the QC problem.

I'll trade if for an 'overrated' Sebenza if anyone is interested. (Actually I carry a miniAFCK so I'd be glad to trade it for one of them thar 'lil Sebenzas with the little fly thingy on it.)

I'm still waiting for an axis lock with a flat ground blade in the 3" range.

How about the EDI Genesis???

This knife has been highly touted by magazines and by retailers. Yet...I rarely hear anyone sing its praises in BF. I have heard of people buying them and then dumping them. I don't own one so I'm in no position to offer any firsthand experience. But I would love to hear from others who own or have owned this knife.

AFCK-I am one of the lucky ones, mine actually came with a razor sharp blade; but I'm really getting sick of having to grab the frame and twist it to keep the blade from rubbing. It looks like it's solidly built, and has fairly thick ti liners, but the blade has alot of horizontal play and the handle flexes more than I've ever seen on any other knife. The lock is very strong and reliable though.

As for the Sebenza's price, it is a knife that will TRULY last a lifetime. The handles are not made of titanium so that they will look "cool", it is so that that they will literally last forever, they will not corrode or fatigue as both aluminum and steel will. The wide, hollow ground blade can be sharpened far longer than any other I can think of. It can be refurbished for a nominal fee, the only "production" knife co. that will do this. I even read that while CRK will not provide a second blade to an owner as a "long term" option, that they can and will replace a blade that is broken(for a charge, of course, if it is abused). And lastly, it can be easily diassembled, cleaned and lubed thereby greatly increasing useful life in the critical pivot area-deer guts, hair, etc. are not good pivot lubricants.

Sounds like a bargain to me, especially when one considers that alot of folks spend more on HALOs and DA SOCOMs and other such toys.

Hey, Hoodoo -

I own and regularly carry a Genesis, and I really like the knife, now that I finally got one that was right (my third one...).

EDI had some serious teething problems at first, with locks that wouldn't pass the back-whack tests, but they owned up to the QC problems and promptly replaced any knife that had a problem.

The Genesis itself has a really good blade profile, the handle is comfortable (to me, at least

), and the knives all came with an excellent edge which mine have help through some heavy use.

Sorry to ramble. Genesis. Good knife. Good Day.

How about the Emerson CCQ-6 and7 ? Hyped in the magazines. Hyped in Markinko's books. USELESS BLADE SHAPE. Piss poor QC from benchmade, and a 4 year wait and $400+ bucks from Ernie for a custom. I think my Sebenza is a bargain at $290. But what do I know. I'm not a super secret, recon, seal-ninja.

Seems like all the folks who think Benchmades are overrated are able to back up their opinions with experience. My experience with Benchmade is the same. The quality is just not there.

The only way I'd say a knife is overrated would be if I had high expectations of the knife based on what other people said about it, and was let down through actual experience with the knife. This was the case with Benchmade, so I wouldn't hesitate to say it's overrated.

That being said, I wonder if you folks who think the Sebenza is overrated are basing your opinions on experience? If not, how would you know?

I carry a Sebenza daily. I don't think it is overrated, because I think it has the best "total package" of any folder. I would like to handle an Apogee, though.

Most overrated : Emerson production. Every one I have had, even two hand ground versions, had tricky liners. I would have no faith in them.

ps- My Sebenza cut through 32 ATAKs before it would no longer shave

Although I am a huge fan of the AFCK, it is over rated. They could do sooo much more with that knife. Actually I think I'll go one step further and say Benchmade products are over rated. Not saying they aren't good, they just don't live up to the ad hype. Microtech without a doubt. Emerson's also fit into this category. I can't speak for the Sebenza but, it seems to have the fanatical followers like the AFCK. That alone makes me curious.

I think Spyderco's are one of the few brands that don't really fit to easily here. You usually get more than what you expect. Problems are not common. Now if Sal would bring out a design that really reached out and smacks me upside the head.
