most over rated folder?

Dirk, I definitely agree with you about Spyderco. They have to be the best factory made knives out there. I've only owned two and they performed great. Of coarse, I lost them both using the clips! I haven't made that mistake with my Sebenza. It goes in a sheath!!

I think that BM is the most overrated folder on the market, I just don't care for the steel at all, however, I do like most of their designs.
I purchased a Sebenza because it seemed that all the owners of them (on Bladeforums) praised them so highly. Besides, if I didn't like it I could probably sell it on Bladeforums! Well, I don't think that it's overrated at all and I have paid 1/3 more for folders than aren't even close to it in quality.

REKAT knives are overated.Poor fit and finish,Rough action,Poor grinds, cost too much, and poor responces from customer sevice.
You pretty much get what you pay for.A hundred bucks can get you a fine folder that may lack some fit and have bad grinds but still performs very well. Some of us grow tired of that and want more so we buy a Sebenza that has outstanding fit and finish, zero blade play yet smooth as glass and high performance cutting ability. It is not overated. Some people are just not willing to pay that price for a user.

Let me also mention the Emerson Commander. I have only seen a few, but everyone had problems. The blade rubs the liner, it wont stay closed, and if you tighten the pivot to correct those problems it gets almost impossible to open. I have also read alot of similar complaints about the commander.

If you listen to the company's hype, I would say Cold Steel is the most overrated, though I think most actual ELUs have a pretty clear picture of their strengths and weaknesses.

I have to defend the CQC7 here-mine is a tank. If you don't like the blade design, then by all means pass on it; a chisel ground tanto is a chisel ground tanto. Mine locks up solid, holds a great edge, and is ground beautifully. It's an Emerson, not the BM. And as far as the REKAT Carnivor goes, yeah, it's not silky, but I like to work on my knives, and I don't think the price is out of line with what you get. (Of course, that depends on how much you pay-I got a pretty good deal on mine from Murray at ProEdge. If I'd have paid what I've seen them advertised for I may think otherwise).
I don't really have a vote for the most over-rated folder-I've had good luck with all my folders, probably because I wear out Bladeforums with questions before I buy any!

Would have to be the Microtech Nemesis.
I own one and actually use it as a carry piece at times. I have used and abused it just like any other knife I own.
The blade is not exceptionally usable for most things I need it for and the lock up is a bit wobbly at times.
I got it for fun and on that account it never disappoints. But it just isn't that good of a knife.
It is, however, the world's best letter opener and conversation starter.
So there.

Spyderco knives.

They have a couple of good ideas, but haven't implemented them well yet.

Hmmm... I think I'd put the pocket clip and Sypderco trademark hole (although I personally don't like it) well above the status of "good ideas."

Nonetheless, despite their quality, somehow none of the Spyderco knives have ever really appealed to me design wise; there's always one little thing that's enough to make me not want to buy the knife. With Benchmade, it's the exact opposite; I really like the look of a lot of their designs, but the quality of manufacture isn't there, from what I've seen.

I wonder if Sal Glesser (sp?) has ever considered buying Benchmade?

Now that would be a knife company!

You guys have really lost me when you start talking about Spyderco, and them maybe coming in behind BM's for design? What company has the lineup of collaborations that Spyderco has? Okay maybe you guys are alergic to holes, but come on?

I think some of BM's designs are great, but after what I've learned on these Forums there is no way I want one. There are too many sure things out there, and Spyderco is one of them, BM is a crap shoot at best.

I admit it, I don't know much, but I know what I like. If you think Spyderco's are over rated, you don't know beans!

I don't think the Sebenza is over rated. Over "priced" most definitely. It is one of (if not the best) production folder out there. But is it 2 - 3 or 4 times better than Spyderco, Benchmade, Camillus, Gerber etc.. I don't think so (and yes, I own two of them now). I think they could cut their profit margin about 20% and they would sell twice as many knives, making more money and providing their quality products to more of the general public! Just my opinion.

Most over rated BM AFCK.

I can understand that you don't like the design of most spydercos. I wasn't really all that fond of the huge hump in the back of the blades at first. Then I got one and realized that the hump made it great for putting pressure forward with your thumb, and not having it slip. You admitted that spyderco had excellent quality. Just because they aren't exactly your style doesn't mean their over rated.I don't really like how they look either. But I'm not a collector, I only buy knives to use. And for using, they're some of the best knives out there.

Emerson customs. I love the fit, finish, and feel, but they are not worth the $1000+ aftermarket price they are bringing. Everyone I have handled has been of excellent craftsmanship. Of course, if someone wants to spend that much money, that is their personal choice. I would happily pay $500 for one, that is what it is worth. For a grand, give me Damascus blade and bolsters and some dark mastodon bark for scales.

I vote for the BM 710. Like someone else said, I am having problems sharpening the knife. I read the FAQ about how to do it, but it is not working for me. I get it fairly sharp, but not scary. Other than that, it is a good knife.

Interesting thread. I think I agree with as many people as I dissagree with. Anyone who has seen me post on the various forums and rec.knives in the past might recall that I have always had a great dislike for the AFCK. There was a debate going for quite sometime over the Military and the AFCK. I think I was in the minority for a long time with my choice of the Military. I have owned three two of which were in 440V. All of them were first generation knives. The claim that 440V is inferior to the likes of ats 34 and BG42 made me laugh. Although I do realize that we don't all use knives for the same sort of things. I strictly use mine to cut and do not use them to pry. I may well be cutting different materials than those of you who have had problems with the steel. I have never had a problem with chipping as others have. It proves one thing. There is no perfect blade material. I doubt I will live long enough to see such a thing.

I have to agree with some of the other folk here about the sebenza. It is in no way over rated though I would agree its a bit over priced. It locks up, holds an edge and sharpenes up as well as everyone says they do. Fit and finish are also as excellent as everyone says it is. Pre axis lock, bolster lock and integral lock copies it was worth every dime because you couldnt get a folder with half the lock up but now it seems a little silly to spend all that money when there are plenty almost rans for 100 bucks or so.

Oh I have a large sebenza for about two years.

The funny thing about this thread is that in all the "What's the best folder ... ?" threads the same knives that are mentioned here are mentioned there. This just reinforces in my mind that there is no MAGIC knife that is much much better than all the others, and that's because we all want and need our knives to do different things.

The most interesting thing to me when I buy a knife is not how good it is compared to what other people said, but how good is it compared to the claims its maker makes. After all they are the ones who should know more about them than anyone else. On this basis I would say that anything Cold Steel is probably the most over-rated.

Also, on behalf of the Sebenza, I heard all of the talk about the Sebenza and just like anything else you have to take all of that with a grain of salt. You have to realize that those are other people's opinions and that they are ALWAYS biased, the question is how much. Well I got my Sebenza and have definitely not been dissapointed. Yes there are knives that cost half as much and are CLOSE in quality but they are not better. In my biased opinion the Sebenza is the best folder out there for my needs and in that case the Sebenza is not over-rated.

Replace Sebenza with MicroTech in the comments above. Good knives but, seem pricey for what you get. Forget the collectors who bid prices up so, high - buying one brand new for a user - just don't see the high cost once the knife is in hand.

. I have run hot and cold on them. They are good knives but, at their pricepoint I just don't see it. They lack the final finish I expect in a knife at that price. The KFF liners pinch the flab between the knuckles on my fingers. Screws on knives are not sunk to a uniform depth. Grinds on blades are not symetrical.

Stay Sharp,
Sid
