Most over-rated production knife brand?

Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, dancing.

This thread is gonna go down hill quick.

That
was called humor.

I got a chuckle out of it and it elicited an involuntary nod.
Not the kind of nod that so many post elicit but the kind of nod signaling agreement.

I enjoy this forum for its technical aspects . . .
but brother there could be juuuuuuuuust a touch more humor.

Laytax if you're out there and you are reading this we need you !
This forum needs you !
ahhhhhhhh the good Ol'days.

Oh and that's a hard question I'm still mulling
It's premature but I'm between Buck and Boker but I like both and they are both inexpensive so it's not really true or fair but I don't like many of their knives when I actually go to cut stuff but they make some very fine products as well.

Böker covers such a vast expanse of Cutlery, they can adequately fall in both one of the most over rated and under rated brands, and both claims can be accurate.

Be it an Italian made Jens Anso Zero in n690 which can be found for under $50 (under rated)

Or a German made Vollintegral XL, a pretty basic 5.75" fixed blade in pretty basic 440c (which I do love) often selling for $300. (A bit over rated)

This should be a poll.

I vote GEC.

It's just a rehash of knives made years ago with a manipulatively restrictive delivery channel that encourages flippers to cyber squat on the site, soak up as many knives as they can and then I quote "Catch & Release" them at twice the price and thrice the value.

That should stir folks up.

Kershaw, Emerson, Strider, Hinderer, Microtech, Benchmade, and Zero Tolerance.

Had an Emerson CQC7 and hated it.

Had a Benchmade CQC7 and loved it.

I found the Emerson version over-rated. Haven't bought another since.

There are folks that feel the company makes a high value product and that's great. I merely don't find it to be so.

My top 5 in order

1. Medford
2. Strider
3. Microtech
4. ZT
5. Busse (even though i'm a fan)

Sorry you feel that way, and had to go tattle on me, but this thread is nothing but an invitation to bash the maker of your choice, and I wont take the bait.

With that, I'm outa here. Have a nice day.

I would agree on ignoring low hanging bait.
It is however interesting to read along as a consensus develops ;-)

Wow.....replace Strider with Winkler and you have named my five favorite knife brands! Not in order though...To each his own I guess.

As an experienced Fällkniven user and owner ( I own more of them than any other knife brand) I think they're grossly overrated.

Like very, very overhyped and overrated.

You rarely see negative comments about them, and I've had pretty poor experiences with edge durability under (light) stress that I haven't seen with way cheaper knives.

Design-wise they're very good, better than most. The steel I think is a fail.

Only one vote for Benchmade so far? PERSONALLY I think the axis lock is in dire need of an update and their blade finishing, to me, is unacceptable.

Why?
Because of the Omega springs that only seem to break on the internet?

It works, it's strong, and plenty and folks like it.
Plus, they do offer knives with other locks.

I have to agree with this assessment, though it won't go over real well on the traditional forum.

I got a couple GEC's recently, sent one right back. The one I kept is a good knike all in all. Still, (apples to apples), my Boker 2004stc at about 20 bucks less is twice the knife of their #73.

Grohmann knives make the D.H.Russell belt knife along with others. I visited their factory and bought 3 knives. The belt knife is really a rounded steak knife worth $10 they charge $100. The steel needs frequent sharpening for little use. The expensive folder broke the first time I pushed it through a branch another waste of $100. The large filet knife was cheap, the sheath cost more than the knife but I like that one at least. Never going back.

Which brand that hyped too much or the price does not meet quality in your opinion?

Don't get me wrong, the quality is there, but ZT has never lived up to the hype for me.

Same with cold steel.

Don't flame war me please!

I won't name names, but I will say that if a knife goes for just as much after a butt-ton of them have been sold, then it goes for too much. Increased sales should result in decreased prices with no change in quality.
If not, then the quality doesn't meet the price, even if the quality is great.

Give clues then

I can think of at least 10 brands that do that.

Also bear in mind knives in general have gone up in price in recent years.

Chris Reeves! (hey we got $400 knives, but you cant flick them open cause they will break....cause they are $400....and flicking them open breaks them...cause they are fragile...cause $30 knives are fine but our superior $400 knives cant take it.)

Steel kills them, and I can't understand why they dont change it, because Bill Harsey is a damn good designer and an otherwise 9/10 (at least) knife like the Pacific goes to waste.

Also I'm guilty of using a CR mainly, despite its flaws.

I only have fixed blades though.

Emerson. I've owned a couple- love the blade shapes, love the grinds, love the wave, love the handle ergos, hate hate hate their weak liner lock they use being "The #1 hard use knives in the world".
