Most overrated knife?

richstag, is that the 13?
I'm thinking about getting my first Emerson (still an Emerson virgin! but i love my kershaw blur), and i'm just lost which one to get...they all look so beautiful!

I think i'm down to the 8 or the 13...any opinions on either?

I personally have been obsessed with Emersons ever since I laid my eyes upon them. I agree with whoever said earlier that, since all Emersons have the same material, so when you buy a new Emerson, you're seeing the direct difference in the blade design rather than the different steel or whatever. I respect the company for finding a formula that works, and sticking with it. This gives me a lot of trust in the Emerson company. Just for the fact that the Emerson company has so much confidence in their products, gives me enough reason to shell out the extra bucks for their high-quality knives.

That is a knife of the year called the Nineteen Eleven. They are going to offer it now from what I understand in collaboration with Les Baer.

That is probably my favorite knife. The only reason I stopped using it is because of how rare it is. If they come out with the Nineteen Eleven separate from the Les Baer I will buy one as a user and I don't think I could be happier. As far as the 13, I bought one of them for my father and he LOVES it. I sharpen it for him when it needs it and the times I have handled it I really enjoyed the chance. It fits my hand very well. The blade is very very nice. The 8, well I don't have one of them but I am sure others on here do and will help you out. The new super cqc-8 looks awesome to me though.

The 13 and 8 are two great knives, you cant really go wrong with either.
I personally like the 8 out of those two but the 13 is a popular knife as well.

I have never heard of an EKI with S30V.

There is some older customs from way back in the day with ATS34 IIRC, there is also some customs with damascus and a very few Ti blades but other than that its all 154cm.

In 2004, EKI made a special run of S30V Commanders, there was a total of 40 made. Awesome knife!

I am not sold on this super steel craze. 154 CM is good steel it is by no means inferior. The extra edge retention comes with a price both literally and performance wise.

With the harder super steels that retain their edge longer there are serious trade offs to consider such as the tendency to snap easily due it's hardness and if you ever make the mistake of letting them get too dull you will be stuck sharpening for quite a while. They are not the end all solution since they are not appropriate for certain types of knives.

An easy to sharpen super steel that is also very strong and resistant to snapping (something for nothing, not yet anyway) would be what I call significant. The closest that I can think of is a laminate but that idea is ancient (by no means new) and costly.

Unless you do very frequent daily cutting I don't see the advantage of the super steels since something like 154CM and other steels (AUS8) offer more than enough edge retention for the average user.

What I don't see much of discussed is how to choose the proper steel for the type of tasks you intent to use the knife for.

I find the simplicity and practicality of the emerson line to be their strong point. I do not find the looks of most Emersons appealing but when I hold one in my hand I just want to keep holding it they feel grippy and comfortable. They don't look nearly as ergonomical as they really are you will feel it when you hold it.
