Movie Recommendations?

Maybe the funniest scene ever filmed in a movie:

The monster of Young Frankenstein and the Monk, the serving of soup, the lighting of a cigar. The monster's reactions, the anticipation, waiting for the response...absolutely wonderful.

Gene Hackman is priceless.

.

Are you still talking about Young Frankenstein? I thought that that was Frank from Everybody Loves Raymond, I think he was the Wizard in Taxi Driver also.

Did you like those chimpanzee movies he was in?

I'm trying desperately to find a pic of Klyde with his arms up in the air, or one of him stealing Philos "moms" Oreos for my avatar. Those were entertaining movies, Every Which Way but Loose, and Any Which way you Can.

Here is one that I haven't seen anyone mention anywhere in these threads: "The Graduate" with Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, and Katherine Ross. "Here's to you, Mrs. Robinson, God in heaven smiles on those who pray every day, hey, hey, hey." That film came out in 1967 and it caught lightning in a bottle. it was a reflection of the alienation that the Baby-Boomers, just coming of age, were beginning to feel toward the world that their parents had created for them. This was to explode quite visibly within the next year with the hippies and all of the rest of what we think of as the "Sixties Counterculture."

Besides, it is one Hell of a good movie, Mike Nichols at his best. And it has great music.

The new version of Appleseed is really good, as is Blood:the Last Vampire. As far as live action movies I liked Mystery Men, Galaxy Quest and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (for comedies). For action, the 13th Warrior, Last Man Standing (based on Yojimbo) and Sin City. House of Flying Daggers and Ran, for foreign.

Most of those are pretty good, but I am not too keen on that anime section you posted. The visual of the 3d animation of Appleseed was nice, but I really wasn't digging the movie as a whole. It looked nice, but didn't give me much more than the pretty visuals.

As for Blood, it was going great. I thought it was going to be an awesome movie, but right when I thought it was really going to get interesting, the credits came up... that is when I found out that Blood: The Last Vampire was actually just a 45 minute promo to show off what the studio can produce as far as visualization and audio (which is quite good). Also, a series just aired in Japan in 2005 called Blood+ which is supposed to be based off that promo.

For anime movies, I would reccomend Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Cowboy Bebop (plus the series), and The Castle of Cagliostro. They would be a nice start.

As for Dune, although I did enjoy the original movie as an entertaining look at the story, the SciFi series is superior and follows the book much better.

And The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is pretty good, especially in terms of visualization. But if you watch the original series, you will get much more out of it. The older one is by far funnier and has many more of the book in it, but the newer one is more fun to look at. Can't go wrong with watching both.

I have all of those except The Castle of Cagliostro. As of late I've been hooked on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Bebop is another fav.

Has anyone ever seen The Russians Are Coming? Its dayum hilarious. I can't think of that old commedian's name, but he was funny as hell.

If there are two people in the scene, and the monster is Peter Boyle, then the monk is........................

Gene Hackman.

And that hottie, Frau Bruekner...woweewowow. (cue the horses)

I liked the orangatang movies too, also the Smokey and the Bandit movies, Hooper and the Cannonball Run movies... Good memories from childhood...

I liked the first season and a half of Battlestar Gallactica (the new series) but it seems to be wandering off... Dead Like Me is worth watching from the beginning to the end (2 seasons).

For movies: Stuff not mentioned... Office Space, the Flint movies with James Coburn, the movies from Pierce Brosnan's production company, and for older movies, Pillow Talk is funny and well written as is Man's Favorite Sport and Sex and the Single Girl. I also like the "Road to" movies with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.

The Castle of Cafliostro is a Lupin the 3rd movie from 1979, but it was dubbed into english in the 80's and again in the 90's.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is awesome. I am halfway through the 2nd Gig, can't wait to see how it goes. But you have to watch it more than once to fully understand what is going on... even now I am still a bit confused.

I still regard Cowboy Bebop as the best anime series around, it truly deserves the hype surrounding it. Wolf's Rain (same creater as Cowboy Bebop) is another that is excellent. Neon Genesis Evangelion is pretty good too, but it will blow your mind.... lets just put it this way: the end of the world is the freaking sub-plot to the show.

-->Never got into Lupin the 3rd.

-->I have the whole first season and the first two discs of 2nd Gig, #3 just came out but I haven't picked it up, yet.

-->Bebop is awesome. Wolf's Rain made me cry at the end. Evangelion is a trip (especially the last two episodes) but a cool series. I only got to see the movie once (where Osuka takes on all the production Evas, the white ones with wings and no power cables). I also liked Witch Hunter Robin and Last Exile. Have you seen either of those?

Full title: "The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming". I think you're thinking of Jonathan Winters, but Carl Reiner and others were in there too. Good movie. Great ending.

The thing about NGE is that the last disc (the last 3 episodes) are actually replaced by the movie "The End of Evangelion". BTW - "Death and Rebirth" is better left unwatched, it is just clips fomr the series. Apparently the creator had some sort of emotional breakdown(went extremely cynical) before or maybe even during the production the of the series which explains why it seems to loose focus in the last 8 or so episodes.

I saw a bit of WHR but lost interest in it, it was moving too slow for me, but I will eventually finish it. I did see Last Exile. It was a neat and very interesting series. Excellent music, unique and very good story line, and incredibly fun to watch. There are a few parts of it that I can't quite figure out (did Clause sleep with that Princess chick or what???), but it was still very good.

Sassas named mine. "Office Space" is freakin' hilarious because every bit of it is true. People who think it's fiction have never worked in IT. There's a guy just like Samir in my group. I have a red Swingline stapler on my desk and love to walk around with my coffee cup at work, saying, "Yeah, that would be _great_ thanks!"

Too many others to mention, but I just saw "Syriana" and was blown away. What a great story. Love movies with a revenge theme to them. "Once upon a time in the West", other Leone westerns, Sci-Fi classics like THX-1138, adaptations of Heinlein's Starship Troopers and Puppet Masters, political thrillers like Day of the Jackal, etc. I always find myself rooting for the bad guy in those.

Like I said, too many to mention...

"Dersu Usala"...Almost a documentary of early 20th century friendship between Russian surveyor and native guide (Goldi nationality), by the director of Seven Samuri and Yojimbo. just great.

I think I can guarantee that everyone here on this forum would like this movie. Kis was kind enough to send me a copy and it is one of the best I've ever seen.

Another good one if you can find it is "Nanook of the North" a true story about an eskimo family. They have most of it on a continuous loop out at our zoo. They had to edit some nudity and the parts where Nanook was beating his dogs.:o :grumpy:

I have to add this Double Feature suggestion:

Bram Stoker's Dracula
followed by...
Mel Brooks' wonderful Dracula: Dead and Loving It.

Also, Raising Arizona. Very funny, with lots of heart. And, for the music lover, The Complete Monterrey Pop Festival.

Good calls, everybody.

Take care.
