I think it was Wanted: Dead or Alive where Rutger Hauer uses a fixed blade tanto that he carries in a shoulder holster type setup. I was about 12 when I saw that and it started my love of "Americanized" tantos.
 
In the movie Seven/Se7en Detective Somerset frequently uses his stiletto switchblade. He even throws it at a dart board.
 
There's a pretty funny scene in Second Hand Lions where Robert Duvall teaches young thugs the proper way to handle a knife during a fight, then proceeds to take it away and beat the crap out of them.
