Moving away from folders towards fixed blades

I’m starting to fall into a fixed blade habit. I do a lot of woodworking and I’m starting to hoard scale material. I can’t pass up a good piece of scale material. So I have to buy blade blanks in the same numbers. Right now I have 6 to put together along with 8 sheaths.

I find I like the Loveless City Knife and Steiff Horn patterns best for casual carry. This one's out getting a new sheath made, but I have a others. You should try this pattern Gary.

That’s always been a favorite of mine, I regret parting with one of David Boye’s version, I will see if I can locate a photo of it

I’m a huge fan of smaller fixed blades as well. I do carry one most days but I’ll always have a folder in my pocket.

Good thread Gary. Needs more photos! 😁

I’ll drop these here…

I’ve still been wanting to try a REK Ember but I don’t know the secret handshake to get one!
It's more of a touching the side of your nose with your index finger I think, not for everyone ;)

As for more photos, this knife is a mainstay with me for a while now, handle is a bit thin and I thought that would be a detriment but ends up working just fine.

Made a wrap around horizontal carry adapter, excellent method of carry, you can unsnap and remove the sheath quickly and also slide the leather under your belt and over the sheath to snap back on just as fast.

There's still a lot of folders I'd love to get, but for the last three years nearly three-quarters of my knife purchases have been fixed blades. There's so many types and sizes, made by so many different designers and companies. I like carrying a folding knife for general use, but when I'm planning on actually accomplishing something outside it's going to generally be with a fixed blade.

I like to switch between a 3.5” fixed and a 3.5” folder, along with a SAK. No real reason most of the time. I notice myself appreciating a good small fixed blade more and more as I go on. A fixed blade sure simplifies things when my hands are full.

Sorry I've been a non-participant for so long, I've had health issues.

I have two problems (really the same problem) with fixed blades - how to conceal one big enough to be useful to me, and two, how to draw it from a pocket without slicing my pocket edge to pieces. I could use some experienced advice.

Again, still having health issues so I might not get back to you quick.

Hi GG, Gary W. Graley Gary W. Graley , I am like Coleman Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery and Gary Peregrin Peregrin , often combining a folder together with a smaller fixed blade. Functional and work appropriate, since I work about 50/50 office/home, and will pretty much wear shorts until the fall. More than enough for daily tasks and nothing would make anyone inside a casual office bat an eye when opening packaging or using at my desk, Outdoor activity these days consist of regular walks/hikes with the dog and occasional camping trip.

I found out long ago I usually prefer a fixed blade over a folder for most uses. Most days I have at least a small fixed blade on me, but I still carry at least one folder of some flavor along with it any given day.

I'll have to circle back with pics when I have time to mess with imgur or something.
