Munky's first Knives Plog

First knife beveled! Went really well with the jig i made, though admitidly it is a bit flimsy. Found some copper pipe fittings that fit perfectly over some dowls, and duct taped them onto a swiffer. The bastard mill files cut great, was done in about 20 mins. with most of that time spent making sure it was centered. so yeah, Keith your doing it wrong.

Marking the center line by coloring the bottom with a permanent marker and scratching it off with a 1/8 drill bit. Make sure the bit is rotated correctly so that the straight part is horizontal. Even so this method leaves much to be desired. I ended up doing trig to figure out how far the bevels would go up on the sides, and marked there to get it centered.

My mom came home to see her swiffer duct taped to the wall. She was not amused.

Think im going to file down the spine a bit more to make it pointy. pointy things are fun.
These are not the bevel markings i mentioned earlier. the bevel is much more even. these were just done when i was still cutting it out.

And dear Rob, there is an edge to this though it is not "Sharp". If you want me to I have no problem blunting the edge off a bit, though do not find it particularly dangerous as is.

:D No problem. I'll get Marilyn to wrap it.

Are there any sanguine goths here?

Rob!

Looks good!

hey, I am very protective of my thingee ma jig! :D

I could have done it in an hour, but I take 1 week breaks every 5 mins. :)

Keith what did you use to mark the center? The drill bit didn't work too great, and i wont be able to mark the sides on a full flat grind.

I used a pair of vernier calipers. It worked alright, I want a dial height scribe

your jig is much better than mine, Id happily make a jig like yours if i had such a nice shop. Mine has too much flex to it. I'm just saying give the bastard mill file a try, should help you even out your bevel by draw filing.

The Edc is now beveled! This is the good side, i learned the importance of a good plunge guide. My improvised "Put and old file in a bad clamp with the blade" initial made me feel smart, but proved a bad idea. The file slowly and sneakily sliped back without me noticing, so the plunge is about 1/16th behind the v notch on the otherside. Bevel is as straight as i can get it given the clamp I'm using isn't mounted perfectly, and wont hold it strong enough for me to angle it. Few things to figure out if im going to make another batch of knives.

Suposiddly at about 5 deg, but i dont know how trustworthy my jig is. The edge is down to somewhere around 1/32, i might try and take it down a little more, maybe even make it full flat. But i want to get the other knives done first and see how much time i have left to hopefully get it out for Christmas.

What angle is the Scandi grind supposed to be at? I thought it was 20 deg, but have been seeing other pictures and mine looks very shallow in comparison.

my jig is begining to make me go insane. looking at angle grinder options.

Little update.

Heres the new jig. height adjustable by sticking crap under the piece of wood. Works much better, don't try the thing with the Swiffer.

and the nessie almost done!

Ended up not making it a full flat ground, and the bevels were a little messy so i made it convexedish and rounded off the top of the bevels. Found a sandpaper attachment to a drill and went at it with some 80 grit paper. Very surprised at how much i had to take off to get all the pock marks off. Going to do all the fine sanding at once, so here it is for now. Tested its thickness a bit by chopping carrots, seemed to do quite well.

Feel like im nearing the finish line. Just have to do about 3/4 more beveling on the woods knife, sand and drill everything and hopefully have everything sent out to heat treat by Monday afternoon. No more big knifes. Think I'm going to practice by making small knifes for awhile now. ah, also have to re-grind the bushcraft knife to 15 degress instead of the 20 i thought was standard.

Rob, do you have a preferred time to call you to get heat treating stuff set up?

Those are preform well, considering the steel and heat treatment.
Sanding in my opinion is more fun than filing, but pretty close. I think that the worst part is that the paper clogs fast (and the marks left from bits of metal left in the file :( ).

Anytime Eric. We try to remember to forward to the cell when we're out.

We've been working like crazy on the new webstore, so I'm a little bleary eyed - but I'm young and strong, so four hours sleep is all I really need. :D

Rob!

Saw the new site looks good. Also noticed 10% off heat treating, someone is game to try out their new oven. Just don't fall asleep with my knife shaped pieces of metal inside it.

what would happen to the s30v knife if i left the top un-beveled part unsanded? I kind of like the dark grey in contrast with whatever shine there is from the s30v, and think i can get a nice even curve look out of it if i sand it right.

Got them suitably well sanded and sent out, it took hours and i no longer have fingerprints. Had some deep scratches in it from pieces of metal in the file, and only 220 sandpaper to get them out.

Also anouther lesson in assumption being the mother of all mistakes. My jig did weird stuff because i assumed the table was straight at the back, when it was more of a parallelogram. so i had to redo the all the bevels on one side.
the scratches on the woods knife were I decided, impossible to get out. so I took the dremel with a sanding drum on it and ran it across, giving it a kind of shiny galvanized look after i sanded it a bit, which does a good job of hiding the scratches.

Toll free number on the store's main page. Feel free to use it. Sorry we missed you. Marilyn is out Cristmas shopping. I'm home now.

Rob!

Crap, now I've got an itch to make more.

I guess I'll call you back in a few days when i figure out what to make.
how long does it usually take you to heat treat them?

one more thing that i forgot to ask. Is there anyway I could talk you into putting a convexed edge on the woods knife?
name your price and I'll buy you a beer if i ever meet you. Or is there a way to do that myself without a belt sander?

that works for sharpening, but i don't think you (I, mostly) can do it consistently enough to actually put an edge on it like that.

You could try draw filing facets into the blade then blending them together. With the facets running from plunge to point if you get what I mean.

I know what you mean, but can you draw file hardened steel? wont it just skate across? could work if i got diamond stones i guess.

I could cutout a piece of mouse pad and sandpaper and stick it on the end of a file and use my jig. Is that going to have consistent enough pressure to get it balanced?
