Munky's first Knives Plog

Eric,

I just want to poke my head in to say take your time. This thread more than makes up for any tardiness. Keep up the good work.

Got the knives back today. Also over the course of these being sent out it was my birthday, and i got a digital caliper. The thicknesses before were mostly just eyed up with a bad ruler so it was exciting to see they were actually decently done.

the woods knife is between .06, and .78. This one was going to be convex edged, so i may have to wait awhile to finish it up until i get some kind of motorized device and thin the edge a bit too. Should have made this one thinner before, but i had just spent about 7 hours filing the bevels down, and another 3 sanding all of them all. it was like 3 am and i probibly wasn't seeing straight.

Wharncliff is at .25-.3, and kitchen Nessie is at .018-.02.

Gonna cut out handles tonight and hopefully have time to glue them too. Looks you may get your knife in December at least.

Also got some more steel for the next couple. How do i get the black scale off the d2? I've heard soaking it in vinegar or something?

Alright, handles on. cutting out the g-10 was a breeze with the coping saw, dont even consider getting a bandsaw spicificly for cutting handles out. and too my suprise the pins fit almost perfectly. you guys always complain about g-10 being particularly nasty, but the death of us all will be epoxy. I managed to affix everything to everything within a 10 foot radius. I'll get pictures tomarrow once i clean the epoxy off the handles a bit, im too embarrassed as to how crappy it looks right now.

A word on spacers. If your going to use them it would be a good idea to attach a piece of it with adhesive spray to the g10, and then cut them both out together so they match up perfectly. I did not have this foresight, and thus there is a little gap on the front without spacer under it.

Epoxy all over my keyboard now. goddamn it :o

They make rubber gloves for stuff like that ;)

I bet fod would sympathize you and the epoxy :)

:D:thumbup:

Be careful with the epoxy. The more often it touches your skin, the more likely you are to gaining a sensitivity or allergy to the resin. Gloves are cheap protection.

I've got the handles on yours done. Mostly.

Can somone tell me how to finish the g-10? I have it at 120 grit right now, a little more pop would be nice, but i still want it to be textured. do i just go up in grit, or is there some kind of oil finish that will do this? I realize this question has been answer many times, i just don't remember, and cant search as I'm basic (us newbs really are the worst once to be without search function ) .

The Kitchen Nessie isnt really quite done yet, but Christmas is tomorrow for us and i want to make sure the handles are comfy for everybody before i finish it 100% and sharpen it.
I just tried to get it to a presentable state, and file down the handles latter. These handles are really heavy, think ill use canvas micarta instead for bigger knives next time. Epoxy will be sanded off the blade tomorrow morning, im just exhausted. Should of wrapped the blade or covered it in vasaline before epoxy. Anyways, wharncliff is g-10 was sanded to 400 grit and looks pretty slick if i may say..

and heres a shot of my attempted use of a spacer. Epoxy got really messy and i couldnt clean it off all the edges. I assume it will wear off with use so i was just going to leave it for now.
No need to mad Fod look bad. This knife looks great when you hold it at arms length though :D

Your friendly neighborhood 'knife maker' with a nifty new hat. I learned to crochet just to make this :D. another gift for a friend. the blue g-10 dust all over my face really brings out my eyes. ;)

and yeah, need to get a better respirator. Found some blue stuff when i blew my nose, and my throat feels a little dry. crap. Think after i finish these I'm going to get a 1x42 belt sander for sharpening/handles, and then build a disc sander for bevels. and eventually build a NWG.

Todd I'm sorry. I tried to sharpen it with my sharp maker but the brown stones barley scratched it after 40 minutes. I can ship it tomorrow, or wait until i can sharpen it somehow, your choice.

Eric,

No need to apologize.

I am a patient guy. I will be happy to wait and I think I'd prefer to see you thru the finished project. But it is your call. I really don't want to interfere.

It is looking very cool just now. I'll be happy to put that one to use.

Warm Regards,

-Todd

Thats a fun hat BTW...a man of many talents you are

Ok, so here are bonehead moves of the day. Snowstorm hit last night, knocked out our power. I Decided to hike over to the post office to send the knife, having nothing to do without power and not having read that post. Latter to discover that an uncle coming over for dinner tomorrow has a knife grinding wheel. I haven't seen this knife grinding wheel, and im hoping for sanity sake that it proves to be inadequate. Second bonehead move was that when i got home, I was notified that I had 2 packages to pick up at the post office. unfortunately not from you :( the third bonehead move was forgetting to put the letter I wrote you into the box with the knife. I will type this up and email it to you, along with the tracking number.

Anyways knife should be there in 4-10 days, so if we're going by the 12 days of Christmas I'm still on time! I expect an honest review of its performance. I'm quite fond of that little thing, and am thinking about making myself one.

Eric,

It came in the mail today. Other than the known issues;), my first impression is very favorable.:D I like the feel of the handle much more than I expected to.
After I have a chance to sharpen and use it, I will give a more detailed impression.

Thanks again!

BTW, I am surprised that you have not reported receiving yours just yet.

Glad you like it. have fun with it. You're right about the handles, they do look a bit awkward looking at the pictures. but they really are secure and rather comfy. Probably wouldn't do them again mind you.

Yours is still not here :(

I came across a Delta 1x42 beltsander, so I'm just waiting to get a drill press and respirator to finish up the last woodsknife handle. I also further shaped the handle of the Nesmuk with files before i got the sander. The scandi is cordwrapped and scary sharp, though the tip came out a bit funny. may try and grind it down a bit when I get an angle grinder.

I do, and I will:)

I try to keep away from too many inside curves as they are difficult with basic tools to clean up and do nicely.

Yours is still not here :(

I am bumming over that. I do have the receipt (sent on 12/18...quoted 6-10 day) and customs form...and the basic insurance was mandatory. Next trip I make to the P.O. I will inquire about it.

Edited to add:

Label/Receipt Number: CP96 9545 568U S
Status: Out of Foreign Customs

Your item cleared customs in CANADA at 8:52 AM on December 31, 2008. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.
