Munky's Thousand Post Giveaway

Looks good!

yours is almost done as well. I just have to work out mounting. Screws weren't long enough for what I had planned. I flubbed up the finish though, platton had a jitter so there are horizontal lines too deep for me to sand out.

No worries! :D

We all win here with the great advise and who ever gets picked will win twice. Great looking knife and the sheath obviously has some thought behind it.

Wash maggots thoroughly before boiling or cooking.

That looks so sweet, nice job Munky, I’m drooling. I would love to carry that every day!
Here is another entry, to desalinate water. Esentially capturing condensed water vapor from salt water using 2 vessels, heat of the sun or fire and a sealing material like plastic. You will use 2 portable vessels (small and large) and a method of sealing the larger vessel (a plastic bag or tarp that wont allow water vapor to escape). Filling the larger vessel with salt (ocean) water or dirty water and placing a smaller empty vessel in the middle, BUT do not allow the salt water to enter the empty small vessel. Cover the large vessel with the plastic and seal with vines, string or para cord, you could bury the vessel in the ground exposing the top (plastic surface) to the sun. Make sure before sealing the large vessel, a slope is created with the plastic (allowing any condensation to collect at the center just above the empty vessel). It takes a while for the water to condense and collect, but if done properly it will add to daily fresh water supply. Also, heating the water will accelerate condensation. Another way to gather fresh water is to collect early morning dew off large leaves and vegetation. I have tried both techniques, and each requires practice and patience.

Try to never put a dulled knife back in your pocket, pack or sheath until it is clean and sharp, never know when you will need that edge.

If stopping and resting and making a fire and shelter are out of the question and you need to keep moving because of some uncontrolable threat then one of those energy boost drinks in the little bottles may be just the thing to have in your kit, it might just get you over the hump to safety.

Bone morrow is an excellent source of calories, contains essential nutrients such as proteins, fats, vitamins, complex B, minerals calcium , magnesium, zinc. So when you harvest an animal, dont forget to consume the marrow, you can boil the bones (just like making soup). When I was younger I remember my family member sucking marrow out of beef or chicken bones, I always ate the cartilage from chicken legs.

I keep a hemostat in my first aid kit for life threatening bleeds. I also keep epinephrine to treat anaphylactic shock.

Why type of tourniquet to you use, a b/p cuff, kelly clamps, Surgicel gauze, or Celox ? Of course, be careful of tourniquets (decreased tissue perfusion and inevitable cell death), having Surgicel or Celox in your BOB or emergency pacs are a better alternative. Epinephrine is also a vaso constricting hemostatic agent, that is what ringside cut men use to stop the bleeding, epi soaked q-tips (and also Avitene). Anyway, Epi-pens are good for a year (usually the expiration date is about a year). Don’t quote me but meds loose a % of their effect over time, it is ok to use SOME meds after the expiration date, BUT DON’T QUOTE ME OR USE THAT INFO! Nurses and other healthcare workers take expired hospital supplies and medications & ship them overseas, the outdated products and supplies are used to run clinics in poor countries. Instead of wasting expired but still usable goods, they are donated by hospitals and clinics to poor countires (that do not have to adhere to the US FDA rules and regs) and then the US hospital staff volunteer their time working in the clinics overseas.

Thanks for the giveaway Munky, the knife looks great!

I was out on a hiking trip the other weekend in the whites of NH when my friend complained that the beer he brought was too warm. We were camped next to an ice-cold mountain river, though, and it certainly did the trick!

On that trip, we car-camped the first night, so weight was no concern. I brought my large cast-iron skillet and threw it over the fire. I invented this recipe for desert based on what we had available and it came out delicious. A little like apple crisp, but not baked.

Melt a few tablespoons of butter into the pan. You could also use a cooking oil. Slice up apples and put them in the butter. I added just a little bit of apple cider to this mix to keep everything nice and moist. Next, add oats (I used instant oatmeal from packets, but just about any type of oatmeal, granola, and/or your favorite nut would work as well). Then its time for the sugar and cinnamon. Use LOTS. Everyone thought I was nuts scooping in a cup of sugar or so, but it was well worth it. Stir everything with your favorite knife (I used my BRKT Aurora) until it turns golden brown. The result is a sticky, crunchy, sweet, cinnamony, goo filled with chunks of apple, AKA delicious. Of the 8 of us, we managed to forget cutlery, so we served this stuff on graham crackers.

Yummy.

I'll let this run until 6:00 west coast time today. I've got everything all packaged up with some other fun goodies just waiting for a name.

Try to never take your deer home from the hunt strapped to the hood of your car.

Besides being a gross way to show off your trophy, the heat from the engine and exposure to exhaust fumes from all the other cars will make the meat rancid and taste foul.

I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Cool contest.

Put damp clothing into the bottom of your sleeping bag at night. It will be dry by morning from your body heat.

In the southeast US, check the campsite carefully for scorpions. The little guys down there are vicious! They are small and brown and very hard to see. I have found that some places can become absolutely infested with them and they will creep into your camp and get into everything. This is very bad to discover in the middle of the night.

If you search your potential campsite and find one or two under a log, no big deal. If you find more than three, move on!
