Must have knives?

Hi all,

I thank you all for all the info you guys gave me here, which has helped me to purchase a few great knives in the last several months, including ZT 0770cf, Spyderco Manix2 S110V and Gayle Bradley, and Southard Tolk (incoming).

Now, I am feeling to get a few knives I should have as a knife enthusiast in the near future. The first one is Sebenza. It seems to be the "standard" amongst knife people here. Also, people seem to appreciate its great value not right away but after use. I just would like to experience it in my own hand. The second one is Paramilitary2. This one doesn’t also have any obvious appeal to me. But again, people here and there applause and admire its versatility, usefulness, and the compression lock. I think I should have it.

While I will definitely be getting these knives, here is my question. Are there any other must have knives, that you don’t know it until you use them, out there?

I don't know that there are any knives I think you HAVE to get, but I recommend picking up a humble Opinel. They can really make you rethink cutting geometry and what you want in a knife.

Thank you for the info, woodysone.
I guess you refer to the XM series?

I have to admit that I am not fond of his knives. But you are right that the XM knives have been in talks as often as Sebenzas. I would add a 3 in model to my must have list. And I would have it in 20CV, as I prefer polished edge.

Thanks again!

No, there are no knives I have to get in reality. But I just want to know that there are knives which I don’t like by the cover but might be excellent in use.

Opinel, yes. I have gotten that suggestion in the past. I plan to get #8 .
Thank you for your advice.

At least one Great Eastern Cutlery knife. Stop wasting your watch pocket!!!

If you like budget folders, the rat I and II are must haves also!

Traditional!

I have not thought of it, as I kinda like modern steels.
But I have been attracted to them to be honest. And I have looked into Bose knives in the past.

I have never heard of Great Eastern Cutlery and will look into it.
Thank you, Kitten Party (sounds like a very fun party).

I went through a phase of collecting where I bought "historically significant" knife styles and it was very gratifying. For not a lot of money I was able to gather a Svord Peasant, a Navaja, a Higo nokami, a Lagouile, a fishtail Stiletto, an Opinel, a Mercator Black Cat, a Douk Douk among others. I then went after a cross section of classic slip joint folders like Canoes, Stockmen, Sunfish, Trappers, Peanuts etc. I even picked up a few more modern knives like the Buck 110. It was fun to collect, hold and use each of these knives that were in some way important to the development of the folding knife. When I was done I put them all into a single knife attache and it serves as a teaching tool anytime somebody wants to look at the rich history behind modern folders. It's actually making me think about working some traditional knives (besides a SAK) into my EDC.

A Bali-Song though unpractical is a very fun knife to own, I have two and carry one daily as an EDC.

I'd strongly suggest collecting the "classics". There is a lot of collective knife making/using knowledge in these designs, I'd only suggest trying to find a good quality version of each, or at least one from the original makers when possible.

Opinel
Mercerator
douk douk
Higonokami (In Hitachi blue or white steel ideally)
Sod Buster
Barlow
Laguiole (juniper handle is a must IMO)
Svord Peasant

Then maybe the modern classics:

Spyderco Delica/Endura/Para2/mili
Benchmade Griptillian or 940/707/710
Some Cold Steel Triad lock probably

AmosPaul,

No, I don’t. I really wanted a Benchmade. But reviews and comments here regarding their QC and customer service made me reluctant to go there. I am still attracted by some of theirs, though. Any particular model you can recommend?

Cold Steel. I am looking into Ultimate Hunter. Don’t like the design at all. Good reviews regarding the steel of this model makes me to go forward.

Thank you,

Hackenslash,

Thanks for your insight. Although I could go that path for something else, for some reason, I would not for knives. I guess I want to see what people praise in knives what I don’t see immediately. I am curious what I miss. I have been looking into design, steel, and lock mechanisms. There may be something more I don’t appreciate. I don’t see much values in Sebenzas, but many other people, who owns them, do. I must be missing it.

Firestrike,

Bali-Song seems fun. Unfortunately, they are perceived very offensive in Japan. Someday…..

The paramilitary is just amazing, but there's a big problem with it...you can't stop at just one...:D

The other "must have" one for me is the Bauchop which has an almost cult following by some. Although not as versatile as the paramilitary for EDC, it certainly is the knife I want in my hand when confronted.

EricV,

Thank you for the suggestion. I am afraid to go that path because I would not stop buying “classics”!
I am seriously considering Laguiole, though……

WCC,

Is PM2 that great!? Wow.
One thing I am not sure is the steel in the current run.
I like polished edge and therefore M390, ZDP-189 kind of steels.
S30V is good steel but……

Maybe I should wait for a sprint run.

I would say a:
-BM 710, preferably in m390, classic design, upgraded steel.
-Opinel no. 9, carbon or stainless
-Have a custom Fixed blade Made For You.
-A Becker, just to see why those that love them do so adamantly. (A 16/10/12 would work nicely)
-A G10 manix 2 to swap the s110v blade into (makes a Great edc blade).

If I think of any more, I will add them

Buy a Mora Companion, then come back and tell us it isn't a good knife and why.

IMO, for the price, everyone should own a Mora Companion.

Firestrike,

Do you carry?

I know owning larger blades is fine but in Japan isn't any knife over 6 centimeters considered offensive & illegal to carry?

I travel to Japan frequently & even a 6 cm or under knife I believe they will still give you a hard time unless you have a legitimate reason for carrying it due to their Draconian knife laws.
