Must have knives?

WCC,

Is PM2 that great!? Wow.
One thing I am not sure is the steel in the current run.
I like polished edge and therefore M390, ZDP-189 kind of steels.
S30V is good steel but……

Maybe I should wait for a sprint run.

Miso

Miso, I tend to carry a PM2 all the time. Re the steel, perhaps too early to say for me but I use one for hunting and so far the S30V has not failed me. I think the new S110V will be nice when available so perhaps worth the wait.

NJBillK,

For fixed, I will be trying to get one from Phil Wilson in the future. Unfortunately, it is difficult to show off fixed blade in Japan because of the strict law……

BM710 has attracted me in the past. One thing retracted me was the blade shape, which seemed tricky when comes to sharpening. Do you have any issues?

Yes, please add more as you come up with something.

I would love to carry and use fixed blade, but it is a bit difficult in Japan due to the strict law and how people perceive it……. I would like to get one from Phil Wilson for knowing what the “sharpest” but not for really using……

You can't have a fixed blade for yard work, or do you live in the city? If you're in the city, I can understand.

No, I don’t really carry my knives. And can’t. I use them at home or at work. In a strict sense, I cannot really EDC a knife in Japan……

WCC,

S30V and S110V are good steels. I just don’t prefer them to steels like M390, which I can have nice polished scalpel-type edfe with ease. I would buy PM2 compulsively if it is with M390, ZDP-189, or M4. I will still get it to know what is so great in it.

DAVE_M,

I can use a fixed blade in my house as with kitchen knives. People here just don’t use knives outside of their kitchens and seem to feel intimidated by modern tactical or fixed blades.

Get aa handmade 5" fixed blade in cmp 3v. No reason why every man shouldn't have one. I like Big Chris Customs knives, he's on the forums here. Others I've seen that are really cool are fiddleback Forge, Jarrett Fleming, Grossman (sp).

Even if you don't do outdoors stuff, why wouldn't you want one?

The two you plan on getting are two of my favorites.
Another is the Spyderco Military. The Military and Sebenza are my most carried knives.

Thanks for assuring, Ken44. Are there any big differences between Military and PM2, which would make me to buy both?

Hi all,

I thank you all for all the info you guys gave me here, which has helped me to purchase a few great knives in the last several months, including ZT 0770cf, Spyderco Manix2 S110V and Gayle Bradley, and Southard Tolk (incoming).
ZT0770CF is a great knife. I knew I wanted one the minute I first learned about it. I am very happy I found a great deal in the exchange on one a while back before it reached the level of popularity it has now.

I've also purchased a Manix2 and since sold it. It didn't have any specific appeal to me before buying it but with all the high opinions of it and my fondness of benchmade's axis lock, I thought I'd give it a try. The Ball Bearing lock was not nearly as efficient as my benchmade axis lock knives and I did not hold on to it for long.

Now, I am feeling to get a few knives I should have as a knife enthusiast in the near future. The first one is Sebenza. It seems to be the "standard" amongst knife people here. Also, people seem to appreciate its great value not right away but after use. I just would like to experience it in my own hand. The second one is Paramilitary2. This one doesn’t also have any obvious appeal to me. But again, people here and there applause and admire its versatility, usefulness, and the compression lock. I think I should have it.

Similar to the manix2, I purchased a PM2 because of the high opinions and intuitiveness of the compression lock. And as a lefty it didn't really do anything for me. I fumbled with the compression lock. And didn't really dig the protrusion of the spiderhole. Sold it rather quickly. I haven't gotten a Sebenza yet. I definitely will some day because they make left-handed versions.

While I will definitely be getting these knives, here is my question. Are there any other must have knives, that you don’t know it until you use them, out there?

So i haven't really been a fan of Spyderco, but two years ago I got a Spyderco Dragonfly4 on a amazon flash sale for dirt cheap. I wasn't expecting much from it. But the price was right. Of all the spyderco knives I've purchased, it is the only one i still have. Fantastic little knife.

I purchased a Lionsteel SR-2A 5 weeks ago, which had been on my wishlist for a very long time. I should have gotten one sooner. It is consuming my pocket almost every day since receiving it. It is on the expensive side for my budget, but worth every red cent.

The SAK Alox handle knives (Cadet, Pioneer, Electrician, Farmer) are an excellent value and a great secondary carry. I should not have waited as long as i did to buy a Cadet. I kept telling myself to save the $30 for a "better" slipjoint (aka more expensive). Yeah, don't do that.

That's enough for now. Hope this helps :)

Two good choices. In line with your acquiring classic, proven knives, next should be be an Emerson of your choice.

Hey Miso, I feel for you man. :frown:

A bit off topic but if you're not allowed to carry knives I assume firearms are out of the question as well?

There are no "must have" knives. They are all "wanna have" knives and everyone will give you their "wanna have."

Now that you mention it...................I feel the MORA knives are the most incredible knives for $ versus performance.

That's so true about the Dragonfly. I've had the exact same experience with one. In fact, the Dragonfly is the only Spydie that's managed to keep a place in my EDC rotation in the face of better knives. It's an amazing big little knife. The PM2, Manix, Southard, Sage and others sit in my knife case and the little 'Fly goes travlin', lol.

Hey Miso. Glad you're enjoying your growing collection! Here are my thoughts:

To be honest, as my collection has continued to grow, I started getting really sick of all the PM2 talk. To me, aesthetics are really important, and I just didn't get any kind of "wow factor" looking at the knife online. Finally, though, I thought that, as many have said, I needed to just handle one in order to really "get it". After receiving one in the mail, I don't think I can explain it but what everyone says is true. It's an amazing knife and really does need to be experienced. I absolutely can't put it down and it's already one of my favorite knives. So, in short, all the buzz is true.

My other recent purchase was a Case Sodbuster Jr. When I was ordering my PM2 I saw these for around 20 bucks and I thought "why not" and added it to my cart. Now...the fit and finish isn't great. There are gaps, uneven grinds, and the tip of the blade was finished pretty carelessly.

That being said, for 20 dollars I think it's a really, really handsome knife and a joy to use. It's especially useful if you ever are in a situation where you can't have/don't want a pocket clip visible. For 20 bucks, I'd say this is definitely a must have for any collector or knife enthusiast!
