Must have knives?

I really like a Victorinox Huntsman. Very useful for edc. For a fixed blade start with whatever mora appeals to you. :)

IMHO every Knife enthusiast should have atleast one of the following, Swiss Army Knife, Mora fixed blade. These are barebones basic folder and fix blade knife combo that is affordable but great quality. Must own knives to me are those that don't break the bank but a worth their weight in gold when needing a good knife.

Get an
Fallkniven really nice looking extreme performing knives
Esee just unbreakable, and what a warranty, get the izula, esee 3 and 5, 5 is so badass
Buck 110 the one that started it all
SAK cadet

Emerson cqc 7
Kershaw emerson
Get a the classic Ka bar
After opinel someone here recomended the MANN and its really nice
I got all Esee's Im new here and started my collection, I just love Esee

I don't know much about knives, just from what Ive read here, I do KNOW about guns, I'm starting my love with knives, and there has to be a list of must haves, if you came to me and ask me about guns Id say; must haves
Glock
Browning Hi Power
Colt 1911
those guns revolutionized their time and era,
I just wish there was a list of knives in the sticky area with some information for people like us looking to start a collection and have different choices,
from what Ive read here
Glock -- Sebenzas
Browning Hi Power 9mm-- Endura
Colt 1911 -- Buck 110
I may be wrong but thats from what Ive read

Thanks for assuring, Ken44. Are there any big differences between Military and PM2, which would make me to buy both?

Miso

Yes, they are quite different. I know I would want both.
The Military is a good bit larger, but only weighs slightly more, and with the large handle it offers many grip options.
I love it and the PM2, but if I had to pick only one I would go with the Military myself. Not many knives(if any) out there with a 4" flat ground blade that only weighs 4.25oz(only 4oz if Carbon Fiber).

Wow. Thank you all for great suggestions while I was away. There are too many must-have (or wanna-have) knives out there! It’s too bad I can not carry any of them in Japan (and guns are just totally out of question).

I think I get nice encouragement to go for PM2 here. I would also add a Mora to my short list for now, and maybe a few others later on. Emerson might be another one, which I don’t feel much attraction, while other people praise it.

Thank you again for great input! Of course, I would appreciate more suggestions!

Whoa whoa there! You said you KNOW guns and compare glock to a sebenza!?!?
Maybe in relation to utilitarian aesthetics but that's about it. More like Wilson Combat and CRK. Ultra high quality production pieces that are functional art/craftsmanship.

Here's my list.

Must Have EDC Knives:
Spyderco Delica
Spyderco Native
Benchmade Mini Griptilian
Kershaw Cryo
ESEE Izula

Must Have Fixed Blades:
Becker BK15, 16, or 17
Swamp rat Ratmandu
SOG Seal Pup
A traditional KA-BAR

YUP^^^^^
Couldn't agree more Brian!
Amazing blade, design and lock!
And the most fun to play with and fondle!!
I have 3. Gave one to my son and had DOAT make custom scales for the other 2......just about a perfect EDC!

WCC,

Is PM2 that great!? Wow.
One thing I am not sure is the steel in the current run.
I like polished edge and therefore M390, ZDP-189 kind of steels.
S30V is good steel but……

Maybe I should wait for a sprint run.

There are some Elmax blades out there for PM2. CPM S30V is really good steel and i can polish mine as much as i want. I read up a thread from Ankerson, a respected steel tester here, and he says the ability and proficiency of the person sharpening matters more than the nature of the steel, among modern steels. If you want a PM2, i think S30V will treat you well. I've had one for about one year now and am very pleased with its weight efficiency.

I don't really know too much about owning a knife at home in Japan, but what about an automatic knife? I would believe its something that would be different from what you currently have. I would assume that it would be impossible for you to even legally carry though :(

I would recommend the following, not only they are inexpensive and offers good utility, but they all have a rich history among their local users:

Folding knives:
Japan - Higonokami
Switzerland - Victorinox (Farmer, Swisschamp, Spartan, Trekker)
France - Opinel, Laguiole
New Zealand - Svord
US - Buck110

Fixed Blade:
Sweden - Mora
US -Ka-bar

You really gotta feel how smooth Hogues are

For me, hands down, the Benchmade 940 (preferably the 940-1).
It took me by surprise.

I really like the design of Benchmade 940 and seriously considered buying one. But there were reports here and there that the model suffers from blade centering issues. Have they fixed the issues?

With my skills and using EdgePro, I can polish M390, ZDP-189, and M4 pretty well, but not S30V and S110V. The latter two cut pretty well with 400 grit finish, though. Any tips for getting nice polished edge on S30V?

Yep. It is illegal even to own one. No auto, no dagger, and no sward (without a permission). Assisted knives, such as SpeedSafe, are OK. I am supposed to be able to carry a small knife, of which blade is less than 6 cm with a good reason (camping etc.). But law enforcers can still question the reason and possibly arrest one. It sucks.
