My 6 was too pretty...

This actually seems pretty sound to me, try out your gear with a relative safety net. If you use it, or in this case push it beyond what you see yourself doing in the outdoors, then you will have confidence and working knowledge in the gear you have. As opposed to waiting until your already out there, and then finding out your gear is not up to the challenge.

Meh, just a thought..

SJ

So, what you're saying is because it didn't break at home batoning something then it won't break in the woods when my life depends on it? That's simply not the way heat treat physics work all the time.

That is why I always carry a hatchet strapped to my pack.Would not want to chance anything happening to my knife.Next to my mind and skills a knife is the most important toll to me.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I've started doing the same thing.

i kinda agree with jeff on the last statement, it seems like you prove it works with that temperature and that wood, but speaks nothing to different woods with possible knots and sub-freezing temperatures

Umm....Should we be frieghtened that you own this book Jeff?:D

Gotta love that new word "running" for using a tool. ;)

I've carried the small GB but now looking at the mini hatchet from Condor.

lol, i put that in there cause i remember some post where you said you cant be "tacti-cool" unless you say running :D. joking aside, those gransfors bruks look really nice to me. i think i may pick up a fiskars to learn how to use an ax, then graduate to the gb

The Euro to Dollar exchange rate has screwed us on being able to buy GBs at a reasonable price. I'm interested in feedback on the Condor Scout Hatchet. I'm looking for a new hatchet to start running in my pack

Yep, good memory on the running thing. That was an old inside joke from way back.

Jeff’s just a grumpy old fart. He’s kind of like the weirdos that stand outside the gas station. They don’t mean any harm, just be glad they have pants on.

The batoning debate will go down in history right next to Ford vs Chevy and 9mm vs .45.

I too am watching the Condor axe offerings pretty closely. Looking forward to see how they turn out, quality, etc.

Well, I think every one is entitled to their own opinion whether they have pants on or not! :D

i didnt know condor made axes to be honest. ive heard of some really good machetes from them, and some not so good reports about a couple "bushcraft" knives they put out, but them and axes is new to me. do any of you guys have experience with wetterlings? if so whatya think?

jeff- my opinion on some things greatly change a soon as the pants come off ;)

Not exactly what I'm saying, I'm not suggesting you pry you truck door open with your knife so in case you lock your keys inside you know your good to go. Batoning seems to be entertaining, not meant for survival.

Notice I said "GEAR" not knife, I would think to use everything you intend to take out, before you actually need to depend on it. That is all..

By the way, I also carry a hatchet, heaviest single item, and a pain in the ass if I don't use it, but totally worth it if I need it.

SJ

I've just learned to have a little more respect for the tools I work with now. That's all.

I have a lot of respect for the knowledge and experience you guys put into your products, and I totally understand not wanting to see that hard work abused.

Consider me properly chastised- I will never again baton something without first thinking "What would Jeff say?" ;) Not to say I won't go ahead and do it anyway, but I'll at least think of you first :D

Totally on board with that. I hike a lot. Put in 75 kilometers on this Junglas pack in the last 3 weeks. If something is not used regularly in my pack then it gets dumped and room made for other gear. The only thing that is an exception to this is rescue gear and first aid. Point is as you said, EVERY piece of gear has been tested to perform to what it's job and design is. But I wouldnt' go shock load my climbing rope just to see if it can handle it even though it is designed to handle it. I do, in fact, I use my climbing rope and practice with it. But I also verify expiration dates on my ropes as I do my meds and such in my first aid kit.

I carry a simple Fiskars but want to get a G.B. eventually.

Mike

Seems the Condor will be close to the Fiskars in price. I've got the 23.5" Fiskars and used it this weekend. I was expecting edge rolling, etc. but it held up fine.

Well, I think every one is entitled to their own opinion whether they have pants on or not! :D

Ahhh, these are the things that make this country great.... :D

And as a side note, I wouldn't rapel on anyone's rope that decided to shock load it just to test it to see if it would hold up. That's the best way to die. Same difference as beating up your favorite knife then going to the woods with only that knife and expecting it to perform the same way there that it did at home.

I appreciate the post. Really do. But this is not about us having to replace a broken knife. That is the least of my concerns. My rant here is to try and get you to see that every tool and the way you treat it, work with it, parctice with it and take care of it is important to your overall survivability. Too many people get the idea of "it's just a knife" Well, it is until you need it. When the guy from BNN Productions was put out on his solo in the jungle for two days and he lost his machete because of stupidity it changed his comfort level drastically. He was told to guard the machete with your life becasue it is your life. He didn't listen and he was miserable. If he had been many days out then he may well have died. Luckily he just had to be miserable for a couple of days. So, my point is live your life every day always in training mode. Always thinking. Always adjusting. Always respecting the world and the things you have and what are around you. Preaching over with.
