Well, I have been carrying a Benchmade 580 barrage around for about 5 months, and today, I lost it....My guess is i pulled my keys out of my pocket and it fell out.

I have been running around like a mad man trying to find it, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to.

So, I need a new knife to carry everywhere at all times.

My first thought when I lost it and decided I needed to get something else was a sebenza (large)......but i cant pay that and dont want to get one used unless I can actually do a face to face exchange (so if anyone is gonna be around Virginia Tech or blacksburg, va, or christiansburg and is selling one.....in my price range which i kind of doubt, look me up)

I loved my barrage, but I think i will get something different just to change it up a bit.

So i am looking for some recommendations.

here is what i am looking for

folder

blade under 4 inches

no coated blades, i like just plain steel

pocket clip

price range is up to 200, but thats got to be a special knife, 150 would be best though.

I really like benchmade a lot,
Havent owned a spyderco, ZT, or cold steel (but more than willing to consider them)
i have a couple of kershaws (but didn't like them all that much for carrying)

I have no interest in Gerber.....and im not looking for a traditional (i have a case cheetah for that)

so, what can yall recomend

those are both knives i have looked at, as they aren't cheap spydercos

and I like both (though the para 2 looks better to me visually)

The thing i really liked about he benchmade wasnt the edge holding, or the handle, but the axis lock, but then again, I didn't like it at first, so it would just be a change whatever i get

My three best choices would be the Spyderco Sage2, Benchmade 940, or Paramilitary 2. All three knives in good steel and plenty strong.

If you order a benchmade try cutlery shoppe they have a coupon code that lets you buy a benchmade at the prices they were at before that stupid rule that dealers couldn't sell them for less than 15% off MSRP

well that is helpful, i will go there if i go benchmade again

If you wanna get a new Benchmade that's really nice and in that price range ( but discontinued so you have to find one used or something ), the Kulgera is really sweet. I've had mine for about two years now and it's still my favorite.

This seems like good advice. You don't meet anyone who doesn't love their 710. I'm no exception.

my most recent mistake was to look up the benchmade 940.......how did I miss that before hand....

and on a side note....i just saw that benchmade makes a couple kitchen knives.....man i havent been paying attention

Well if you liked the axis lock from benchmade but wanna try a Spyderco why not a manix 2, you can get an s30v version cpm m4 or the bd30p or even a moonglow for under 200

Para 2 without a doubt. Just pick one up and don't look back. The smurf blue m390 version from bento box shop is really sweet but kinda pricy at around $175 but the black g10 s30v version can be had for about $110 and is an absolute steal at that price. The Sage 2 is great as well but the para 2 is definitely the better value and IMHO, possibly the best medium sized edc knife ever. Oh, and if you like the axis lock, you will also like the compression lock. While being slightly more difficult to become accustomed to, it is equally smooth or smoother and lockup is like a vault. Put it this way, I carried a benchmade 707 with the axis lock for 3 years prior to picking up a para 2 and honestly, in my opinion its not even close, the para blows the 707 out of the water. That said, my next purchase will be a sage 2, for more knife sensitive environments.

The sebenza is king IMHO and if you can save up just a little more I'd say wait and buy one.

On the other hand the 940 is also one of the best mid range production folders ever made. At one point in time I had over 10.
If you decide to go with the 940 you will not be disappointed. If you are, (which I doubt you will be) give me a shout and I'll buy it from you. I'm that confident.

Happy shopping!

If you like the Barrage but want to change it up, try out the Kershaw Blur.

I own both of these knives and they carry very similiar. The Kershaw Blur is assisted like the Barrage, and also available in many flavors.

Benchmade 940, havn't owned one, but have handled one, and its niiiice. BM/HD 13960, slightly smaller and lighter than the 940, but just as nice. Really, really comfy in hand, and only 2.2 ounces with a 3.1" blade. BM 558 Ritter Grip, excellent blade shape, good steel. Handles are average, but with a set of aftermarket grips its a dream. The full size version is excellent as well. BM 710, full size blade, light, slim, good ergonomics, a really classic design that feels and works great in actual use. A must own Benchmade. BM 950, unique design, strong blade that slices well. Very cool looking handle, that fits the hand well. Edges on the G-10 are a little sharp, will need some light sanding to be truly comfortable. Blade steel isn't great for the price, but is plenty good enough.

IMHO, getcha a Benchmade 710. If not now, You will eventualy own one anyway.

The 710 was never an option for me, it looked hideous in pictures. And then, I held one in my local store. I had a choice between the Barrage, Striker, Presidio, another Griptilian, and the 710D2. Holy crap, the 710 feels like this glorious knife that descended from the heavens and appeared in my hands (for $150). I cannot image not owning the 710 now. It has cured my knife addiction, at least for the next month or two.

And it's a nice, long blade.

I just looked at a spyderco military (online). and that seems interesting to me as well

but who knows.

Anyways, I have a nice little collection of knives with me, but i find that i dont like carrying them, except the case cheetah, but I want a modern folder, they can put up to more abuse.

also, how is the Kershaw tilt?

I found out that i am taking a road trip over spring break, and will have a chance to stop by Smokey Mountain Knife works. (I have been before and know I can get my hands on a lot of different knives there)
