My complete? Survival kit (Pict heavy) please criticize

I like it, VERY SWEET RIG! I don't really buy into the "light is right" mentality..I think that carrying junk is wasted energy, but for a bug out bag..you need what you need man... I always carry 2 or 3 of the essentials..fire, blade, compass. I don't really think that up to 25-30lbs is that much. I don't know why the stress on the MINI kit...I don't get it. Why do I need a magnifying glass to see my survival kit and not to start a fire! I do believe on keeping it simple, but to each his own...I would prefer carrying some extra weight for some peice of mind..why make it as difficult as possible, if you don't have to. Anyways...I love your kit and great pics, thanks, Gene

What IS the final word on the newer AR-7? I've heard that it's a turd. The M6s are no longer being produced as far as I know. Shame on both counts, the AR-7 is a great idea and so is the M6.

For folks that don't like the AR-7 and can't find am M6, the marlin papoose is worth a look. Its accurate, reliable and is a takedown rifle. I'm trying to find one locally right now.

Don,
I know there will be someone post right after me to disagree, but it is a complete turd. Very cheaply made and the 4 that I have shot were all jam o matics. The Chipmunk, the small Henry single shot, and the best IMO, a tricked ruger 10/22 with a short, sleeved aluminum barrel, are all much, much, better. Chris

EDIT: Don check your email.

Chris,

That jibes with what I have heard here and elsewhere about the AR-7. As far as I know, some of the old Charter Arms AR-7s were great, some not so great, but the Henry is ass. It's really a great idea too! I think the AR-7 and the M6 are a lot like hollow handled "survival" knives to some people, just a gimmick, but I think they have a lot of merit.

Ditto 10/22, excellent rifle, have not had my hands one so modded as you described, however.

Toss the snake bite kit (they don't work and cause more harm than good) and read up on current recommended snake bite response. California Poison Control

If you do want to try and remove the poision, the Sawyer Extractor is your best bet.

awesome rig. at first i thought those batteries were tootsie rolls. not a bad idea for comfort.

That is a awesome set up.

I just have a few questions;

Is the m6 folded up and in your pack?

You are carring a scoped bolt action, what is it and do you carry it and the M6 ?

Yeah, the Sawyer probably is your best bet and it's impossible to hurt as much as the old Cut and Suck Method which really is crappy.

If you are up in the sticks, it's really about the only thing you can hope for besides excellent communications to MedEvac you out.

Jim Keating had this up on his site the other day and I bookmarked it, $700,000.00 Rattlesnake Bite - do not screweth with vipers.

http://www.rattlesnakebite.org/rattlesnakepics.htm

This young man was given multiple vials of Anti-Venin, more than you could possibly carry, etc., etc., etc., and it was still almost three quarters of a million dollars in all the treatment.

Here is the link for the vest
http://www.specialforces.com/store/catalog/product_26225_Search_and_Rescue_Vest.html

the 40 is for protection, there are a lot of pot crops where I live.

I wouldn't mind trading the M6 for a good packable .22, just haven't found one yet.

Don't plan on ditching the vest for any reason, but its something to consider

Usually put some kind of jacket in there for the cold nights

Water cashing is not reasonable because I am living in Orange County because thats where I go to school. So when the SHTF I plan on walking back to N. Cal. and Im only taking the vest and my M1A

The Rat3 is not modified, the coating is just wearing off.

Then, depending on the season and your route, it could be all about water.

Folks cache when doing the Pacific Crest. They are walking to Canada. 'Course, they know their route. In your hypothetical, you may have to detour - many times.

Kit looks good, IMO needs more fishing gear, less ammo and a cookpot with a lid and spices. Chris

I like most of the content. The only thing I would add...

- Magnesium fire starter (never without Sparky - http://www.wisementrading.com/firestarters/magnesium.htm)
- a role of dental floss for extra cordage
- 24 gauge (0.20) stainless steel wire for snares, etc.
- regular asprin
- more duct tape

Nice touch on the oven bag and stainless steel cup. I wrap the top of my cup with the snare wire.

Nice vest-rig Wade. My brother and his buddy do kind of the same thing but they use the helicopter air crew vest as a start.
I have heard nothing but bad news about the AR-7, weather its the old Charter Arms(that was finicky on certain.22) or the Henry version, although Henry claims to have worked out the bugs:jerkit: I am still kicking myself for not getting an M-6 while in production; I rather like the idea. The German Luftwaffe use to issue drillings (double-barrel shotguns over a single-shot rifle) to their bomber crews for survival situations, and I belive they found them effective.
By the way,Wade, what part of the Sierras do you inhabit?
I haven't been up that way since the late '70's, and I'm longing to go back; just the most beautifull sceanery in this state!

Mabe I'm not counting correctly, but he is holding a rifle in the pic, and then has the M6 and the S&W in the pack. Three firearms seems to be way overkill. I guess I've never been anywhere wher I thought it would be prudent to drop the deer rifle that was in my hands in order to find the pistol that was in my pack for protection. Don't get me wrong, redundancy is great, but so is moderation. Personally, I'd ditch the henry and the S&W and pack more ammunition for the rifle.

Again, maybe I missed it, but what is that rifle? Any spare ammo for it?

A trip north would be through some very closed terrain and some very open terrain.

Ever carried an M1A for a while? 12 lbs gets old pretty quick, even when you are in outstanding shape. And I assume, given the amount of ammo you are carrying for the other weapons, that you have a large amount of .308 to carry as well. Very heavy.

Next issue, with a tac vest and an M1a you will attract lots of attention. I assume if "TSHTF" in SoCal about half of the tens of millions of residents will return home to Mexico and the other half will be walking north like you. In that kind of scenario, I'd consider trying to make your setup a little more low profile. Many of those millions would think it might be a good thing to put a bullet or pipe to the back of your head so they could take your cool assault rifle and that tac vest with all your cool stuff. Maybe consider one of those vests that is designed to be concealed under a loose button up shirt like maybe this: http://www.511tactical.com/index.asp?dlrID=511&dept=5&number=49002
It won't carry all that the tac vest will so throw in a quality book bag or gym bag to carry the rest. (The rifle might fit in a large gym or duffel.)

Got a bike? If not sell the M1A and get an sturdy bike and some lightweight food. Millions of others will be foraging for food just like you.

As for weapons, I think the small caliber/large caliber thing makes sense. 22 rifle and large caliber handgun, or 22 handgun (longer barrel so it is useful in hunting) and larger caliber rifle, or even a 22 caliber hunting handgun and a large caliber handgun.

Just my opinion. I'm not a survival expert as I never disaled myself parachuting and don't drink piss or eat turds like real survival experts do.

Looks a great set up to me bro....my only concern would the funny looks I'd get from people if they saw me walking around my areas wearing one but I'd guess where you go that ain't a problem !!!
