Well after a very stressful week(Me and Pekka, the maker, thinking the package was lost) My custom Puukko and fire kit(Tulukset) arrived today, with great squeals of delight from my end.

Pekka Tuominen is the maker and he can be reached at puukkopekka.com. He has some other amazing work listed, but i went with a more simple Puukko I wouldn't feel bad about using.

I had to change my pants when I saw this(if you were planning on sending me flowers for valentines day, thats my old address. Which lead to some of the worrying, and was totally my fault)

Pants changed, box opened and I find this

Nope..not wrapped in paper, he individually packs each item you order in its own labeled box. He also includes business cards.

We shall start with the Tulukset.

Here is the group photo. From L-R you have your Birch roll(more on that in a minute), your Resin Sticks for use with the sulfur, The Tinder Fungus, Carved bone bowl for the sulfur and the Flint and steel itself.

Here is a picture of the bag and bone sulfur cup. The bag is a unknown to me type of leather, very durable and well made. The bone sulfur cup is attached to the bag with a twisted leather..leash I would call it. How the sulfur cup works, you get a ember on the tinder and put it on the sulfur. You let the sulfur begin to boil then dip a Resin stick into and WALA! you have a match. I haven't had time to try it out yet.

Here is the birch bark roll. Its tightly rolled and held shut by a small bit of leather tied around it. But hey, why does it look like there is a plug in it....
IMG_1553.jpg

The birch tube opened to reveal shredded Juniper bark inside. For this one you drop your tinder after it has an ember into the tube blow on the shredded bark to build the ember then put it under your kindling and blow into the tube, then POOF. Fire. I am not going to try this one until I find some birch and can replicate the tube.

Thats it for the fire kit. The steel striker is very well done. Cosmetically there is nothing special about it, but it throws a reaaaal nice shower of sparks. Also included is 2 chunks of flint and a How-to pamphlet in Finnish and English

Noooowww...The Puukko.

Its like a Christmas Present! In the background you can see the information pamphlet included with the knife. It has all the specs regarding steel, wood and care tips.

And there it is. The source of my headache for the last week. And it was worth every second of it.

Here is the back of the sheath, great stitching and holds onto the knife like Kydex.

The Birch insert in the sheath.

Makers Mark and the first glimpse at how well polished the blade is.
IMG_1562.jpg

It came hair popping sharp.
IMG_1563.jpg

And here it is in all its glory, with a perfect example of how well polished it is.

This picture was taken for 2 reason. 1. to show the amazing wood to metal fit. and 2. to TRY and show the peculiar shape of the blade. I don't know if you can tell, but the blade is shaped like a horizontally squished Superman emblem. Very interesting.

Group shot with a Kuksa I had made by another Finnish maker.

I haven't had a chance to really use the knife before I left for work. But while smoking before jumping in the shower I brutally abused a poor defenseless(or so I thought) seasoned oak stick. I started real gentle, cutting notches and shaving bark. Excelled in both categories, like butter. Then I just just started going crazy making huge cuts out of the stick, (safely) slashing huge chunks out of the end of the stick. What I didn't realize was I was making the tip of the stick needle sharp and I accidentally stabbed my thumb and drew blood. The blade sliced through the wood wonderfully. The reason I was attacking the poor stick so viciously was I was hoping to bend the edge, or find a nick in the blade, SOMETHING. But NNNOOOOOooOO, smug bastard still shaved hair and had no noticeable damage to the edge.I have yet to do any fine cutting such as veggies.

The handle is amazing. The fit and finish of the blade to the bolster and the bolster to the wood is perfect. No flaws detected by the naked eye, and I scoured all over TRYING in vain to find fault with the knife. The grinds are even, the handle is smooth with no hotspots or bumps. And amazingly its not at all slippery.

Overall its a AMAZING bit of kit. And Pekka himself is a great guy to do business with. Extremely quick to respond and keep you updated along the way. And his prices are great. At first I thought I was overpaying for the firekit, as all my other bits of firekit were around 20 dollars(except my EB Primitives Firepiston/Belt Axe) and the Pekka kit cost a lot more. But seeing the skill that went into carving the bone sulfur bowl, sewing the pouch, and just the overall quality of the kit as a whole, I have no problem paying what I did.The time from placing my order to receiving the knife was about 5-6 months.

The cost of the knife? I think he should charge more:D

I am not going to post the cost of everything, I don't know if he has changed his prices since the World Economy has slipped even more from when i sent in my order.

Also, Any one who speaks Finnish care to tell me whats going on in this picture?

I wish I could go crazy with orders. I would really like one of his Leukus, but they are out of my price range.

If you have the money, I would not hesitate.

You bastid! Just when I promise myself to lay off the knife addiction-you have to post this. I visited his website back when you posted the teaser pics of this knife-by the way, which one is it? And now I see this review and I HAD to open it!

Seriously I like it very much. Maybe someday...

Hehe, sorry.

Its Puukko No. 2

just imagine the fuzz sticks that it could make....

That's a skill I haven't mastered yet, but I was able to get some real nice thin shavings from the stick I was abusing.

Excellent knife !!!!!!

Ya I am looking forward to playing with the sulfur tomorrow.

The Steel is called Silver Steel(Carbon 1.2%). Seems to be the normal steel for custom Scandi makers. See it on most every custom site I browse.

That looks like a great puukko. Loved the unraveling pics and the cup! keep 'em coming!!!

Fabulous post Darby, thanks for taking the time to share your excitement with the rest of us. LONG LIVE PACKAGES IN THE MAIL!

HAZAA!!!

Now that is a good looking puukko! Congrats! And a nice little fire kit, too. :D

Yeah. That's an article from Finland's largest newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. It's about viral diseases in animals, and that big title in bold font there says: "To viruses, you are just another animal."

Do you have any idea what the angle is on that edge? It looks like a pretty high grind, so I'm thinking it's pretty shallow, 10 per side maybe?

Just curious, as I personally like shallow grinds.
