I don't get scared shitless by some sheeple over the loudspeaker calling for a shelter-in-place. I'd be getting OUT of there. Heck I'd build a loop ladder with 550 chord out of a 3 story window if they wouldn't let me out the door...

Whatever you say, chief...

For a little different perspective.....I am not a student but can be frequently found up front teaching, when not in the lab (medical school). The official policy is "no illegal weapons", but state law allows folders on a university campus so I have lots of options there. There is however a campuswide ban on firearms, even for those who have permits. My backpack, contains all sorts of "urban survival" gear that is to numerous to mention.

As for weapons on the job or on the street, I always carry two Emerson folding Combat Karambits, one on each side.....and don't mind backing those up with a LaGriffe. At work I wear cargo pants with lots of pockets, so I can stash these out of sight so as not to be the object of unwanted attention. This does of course slow down deployment, and makes it impossible to use the excellent "wave" feature...something I just have to live with. On the street I will wear the strong side one clipped on my pocket where it can be easily waved, but the weak side one is out of sight so I don't look to ridiculous.

My daughter just started college this year, and of course.....she is packing a couple of Karambits!

I didn't even pull it out... apparently someone else wants to debate though, I can dig out the orders and form 214 if need be... or you can ask the handful of people on here that know me IRL...

What on God's green Earth are you talking about?
Get with the program. College EDC. Pencil cases, bottled water. Focus, man, focus.

Why are you so bent on trying to impress people on teh interwebz? I don't care if you were a frikkin Delta, it is irrelevant in this thread. I have been in some damn hairy scenarios myself, yet I feel no need to go out of my way to try and justify them on the 'web. If someone asks, sure, I'll tell.

PS...nobody want to debate. Since you apparently missed it: WHATEVER YOU SAY, CHIEF.

IDK, whatever you say chief sounds like a condescending-to-a-mall-ninja statement to me... I wasn't trying to start anything, if you'll read my initial post...

Nah...just who I am...FWIW, I don't really believe much on teh interwebz without some kind of proof. Not a call to PM me your DD-214, but just an admission that I take the 'web with a grain of salt.

Now, if I may, a suggestion: if you are trained and experienced as you say you are, wouldn't it be prudent and beneficial to society as a whole to stay put and render assistance if such a situation occurred?

The almighty campus cops will be blasting anyone still in a hallway with their glocks anyway... not to mention I don't trust schools a single bit. I don't trust the government a single bit. Who knows what these lockdowns are for? They could use it to control the lives of thousands of students, it might not be just for an armed and dangerous perp running the halls.

Thankfully ours realize that they have no experience in the real world of saving lives and what-not.

I was in a dangerous situation in college once. My future wife asked me if her jeans made her look fat. Eighteen years later, I'm still happily married.

I think proper mindset/training is more important than gear in most situations. If I would had that 550 loop ladder back then, I might not be married today.:D

It is interesting to learn from what people EDC in different environments though.

A shelter-in-place? in college? you gotta be kidding me, if they call for a shelter-in-place I'd walk out. thankfully public colleges in Idaho allow CCW (at least I'm told) so I'll be packing as well.

You know what, you are absolutely right. The Gods that create emergencies and survival situations play by a strict rule book and never throw curves

I'm interested in hearing all abour your "dangerous situations" you've experienced as a student on campus as it would be 100% relevant to the discussion.

I have spent far too much time at institutions of higher learning, both as a student and as an instructor.

I have carried a variety of things in my daily outings. One thing that you haven't mentioned at all that I personally found invaluable was my laptop computer. I'm on my third right now, but it's falling apart and will likely be replaced within the next six months. Second or third priority right now. Replacing the furnace is first.

So, my list:
Laptop
pens, pencils, notebooks, sketchpad
calculator, when needed for maths classes (yes, you can do those functions in Excel, but we were supposed to use a calculator)
food for the day/dining card when I was on that program
water bottle
wallet with pocket money
textbooks

With all of that crap, I when I was a student, I didn't add a lot in the way of 'gear', since I was already humping a pack as it was. Pocketknife of some kind or other -- usually a slippie or SAK, sometimes a lockblade, sometimes a small fixed blade, and a small Arkansas stone. Maybe a lighter, but I don't smoke, so not usually. Couple of bandaids, a few tylenols.

Now, since I have a permanent desk, there's a lot less need for me to haul things around. I have a small PSK in the backpack, the laptop, a sketchpad and pens and pencils, a couple of knives.

Not much really. Desk has more stuff in it. Truck has even more.

Laptop.
I got out of high school in 1961.
I think pocket calculators came out in 1970.
I bought the first laptop I saw with a hard drive in 1990.

I still have a couple of old slide rules. :)

I have two backpacks. One has school stuff in it -basicaly a school edc, nothing fun in there. My other backpack comes with me sometimes when I go out, but it generaly stays in my car. Most of the cool stuff stays in the car when I am at school (knives, axe, shovel, first aid, etc).

My actual school EDC (on my person) is a Vic Tinker.
keychain stuff is a leatherman Micra, a whistle, and a photon light
and I carry some band aids in my wallet plus duct tape in my school pack. That is about as far as I go at school. There is no real need for me to carry much else.
