My first gun

Please do not think of using any special rounds for SD. They don't look good in court and may be illegal SD or hunting !!!

No no I never would, IF the chance arises the unlucky person who happens to enter my sights is going to be getting a lead slug salad and a side of "00" buck.

Its about time Sam!! Keep it safe  They sell some 1 1/2" slugs for home defense, not gonna stop a charging Rhino but you can load 12 of them in the tube...I like buckshot myself.
Something else worth picking up (since you live in bear country) Rubber buckshot!!! I have a friend in Sparrowbush who swears by those rounds,he tagged a black bear for eating his garbage and it never returned...would you?? lol Dont try it on a brown or grizzly I hear it makes them eat you feet first :D

Sam, wonderful first choice for a first buy, congratulations.

Please consider the fact of the slugs penetration, as in two or three walls.
Give them a serving of several buckshots and save the slugs for the zombies.

They do take more lead you know.

Leadfoot

Thanks Leadfoot! My home is a basement :D block walls on 4 sides and no neighbors.

Joe, I like the sound of those shorties... I'd like those rubber bullets for deer! Be nice to have a little sawed off to keep in the truck :D:D:D:D.

870 is where it's at!

Welcome aboard. You made a great choice. Have mine in the safe along with its friends. After my father passed I inherited 1/2 of his. Sold them all off (no need for older non collectibles) and bought new. Lots of fun here in Or. Good luck and keep safe.

The pins weren't there this morning ! I tried some 9mm DPX today but last week I shot up the pins with my 44 mag .Then Friday I went up north and took a red deer on a preserve.Just to show you youngsters that a seasoned citizen can do it and properly !! M29, 44 mag DPX[all copper] NO scope ,one shot .
Don't mess with me boy !!!

That's funny! I gotta stop by soon!!!! I'll be back up soon for good end of the month. Congrats on the deer, i'll be sure to be waving a white flag nice and high when I come by :D

Joe, no it's the little range on some stateland outside of Eldred. I met a fella who it turns out lives right down the street from me in Yulan, he had some pins and I was askin where he got em. I came home last weekend to drop a load of stuff and he showed up with a garbage can full. I never heard of that place though sounds like fun :D

Cool Sam! I always found shooting on the wing LOTS of fun with a shotgun. Definately take a safety course. I believe it's a must to get a hunting license. They're is good to have for two reasons: hunting, credibility when transporting your firearm around.

I didn't see anyone mention any of some of the basic safety tips; and, we can NEVER be too safe, so....

  1. ALWAYS treat EVERY gun as if it's loaded. Even if someone like your dad or best pal hands you a gun he just unloaded in front of you. Treat the damn thing as if it's still loaded and you can't go wrong!
  2. Never put your finger inside the trigger guard unless you're ready to pull the trigger. DON'T stand or walk around with your finger in there!
  3. Keep the safety on until you're actually firing.
  4. Confirm the barrel is clear (after checking the breech/chamber is empty) before loading and shooting.
  5. Don't mix libations and guns.
  6. Remember rule #1!!!

What gun are you shooting? I got there around 430PM so you woulda been waiting a long time :)

sam - I have a 22 target pistol and a ruger 10-22 rifle with 30 round mag and a 12 guage auto for dove/duck hunting.
I really want to get out and shoot the 22's.

I grew up with guns, I could reload shotgun shells when I was 6. We made a mini 14 fully auto by putting a bobby pin over the sear when we were 11. I have a 240 acre farm in Texas, and I grew up hunting and stuff and shooting regularly (almost daily when I was a boy).

so - how far away are you from Cheshire? Maybe we could go shoot some stuff. I need to sight the 10-22 in.

edited to add: anybody want to buy a 240 acre farm just North of Houston on Lake Livingston (it has a 35 acre duck infested lake on it - beautiful for wildlife, great for hunting deer, ducks, and for fishing for all sorts of things). I am only selling because I am a state employee in CT and will live here for 20 more years - I wanna buy a smaller bit of land in upstate NY so I can play up here.

Cheshire CT is about a three hour drive from here. Took me three hours to get to the Blue Trail Range.

I was shooting a HK P7 which has the polygonal bore.

If anyone around CT wants to try out Hartford Gun Club let me know, we can try to set up a time. I try to avoid weekends but it's usually not that bad as long as it's not the weekend before hunting season.
I'm a pistol and rifle guy but they have a bunch of shotgun fields as well. One of these days I might even give them a try. :)

I love the slide action sound the 870 pump makes. Thats the one sound that burglers hate to hear.
congrats on the purchase.
