My First Knife WIP

Ok I found my drawings:o. Took awhile because my home network is diconected till next week, I am reconfigureing it to run smoother and get all the file storage on one machine. I currently have 5 computers and at last count close to 10 tarabytes of storage between them and extrenal harddrives. I know its a little excesive for one person, but the hydro company loves me when I have them all on at the same time:D

I should have the plans updated and a rough parts list done by the end of the week. This thing is designed to work with a 12" file so you may hae to scale up or down to fit your files

definately will make it easier, you still have to watch it though. What I do is set the blank on the jig so that I can keep the edge as close to a constant distance as possibel from the bar, measure everything out, trace it onto the support. then flip the blank and measure it out to mirror the first side and trace it on too. Makes flipping it back and forth so much eaisier.

Well I just got back from the doctors with some bad news:(. Looks like I am going to be out of comision for some time in the near future.
I broke my shoulder January 31st of 09 and hae had limmited range of motion and lots of pain ever since, well I saw the specialist today and got the bad news, they think they can fix it but I will be down and out for atleast 8 months most likely longer. The plan is to shave the bone chip that is sticking up off to free up some of my lateral motion, but the biggy is that the end of my clavical is messed up and that is whats causing all the pain. So they are going to cut 1/4' off te end of it to get back to good bone and clean up all the scaring and tears in the rotar cuff. Thats whats going to take so long to heal. I have about 2 months before surgery to finish up my knives then I am out till every heals up.
What really sucks about all this is that its my left shoulder and I am left handed:mad: I went 6 weeks not being able to move it when I first broke it, and that was hard enough this time will be longer

Wow that is unfortunate. Maybe you can try coming up with more knife designs during that time. Hope when it's all said and done though it'll get you full range of motion.

Can't wait to see your drawings for the jig. I am very sorry to hear about your shoulder. Hope your recovery is not as long as they say. John

Maybe you can learn how to sand right handed :D Good luck on the surgery!

that sucks man!! I destroyed my right shoulder about 8 years ago. The doc is right.. takes a long time to heal. I was out of the sling in 6 months but my shoulder didnt feel right for almost six years. It took that long to just be able to lay on my right side.

All the advice I have for you is.... you better know how to switch hit!!...

good luck man

Well I got some wood from Burl Source today, I had scales cut and ready to attatch tomorrow, but I have to use some of this new wood, it is absolutely beautiful, and Iwant him to see the wood in use before I have to take a break to heal I wil post pictures of the wood tomorrow.

Well I took the pictures but forgot the cable for the camera at home, think I will go with the walnut on this knife

Well, after a number of tries to get the finish I want on my knife I feel I have to move on and get it finished as is. Here it is before adding the scales.

I can still see the scratches, but just can't seem to get them to go away :(
I will be using the Walnut I got from Burl Source on it

So I am off to cut out the scales and brass bolsters and attatch them, going with a tung oil/super glue finish. I will post pictures of my progress tonight

Thanks a lot, I am really liking the way its turning out. I wont be able to work on it again till tomorrow night at the earliest, but most likely not till tueaday

Well I have the scales attached and some what shaped, and just as I feared I managed to bugger up things while doing it
  1. I managed to get the scales and bolsters not square, tops are even but well out at the bottom
  2. I put a nice dimple in the one bolster,I have been sanding by hand for sme time now and its still there
  3. I have a gap between one bolster and scale
  4. One of the bolster pins is still visible at this time
  5. I managed to sand into the edge of the spine just in front of the bolster
  6. And I have some heavy scratching to clean up on the finger choils
I have a lot of finishing work to do to come back to close to acceptable and hide my mistakes. Over all the knife feels good in my hand, it is by no means a light weight knife so if I ever drop it I will know it just from the sudden lose of weight.
Enough with the talking heres the pictures today

finally a picture that you can see the little scratches I have been complaining about

DSC01016.jpg

Here you can see the lower bolster does not extend as far as the upper

and the little nicks I put into the spine while sanding, I didn't notice that the duct tape had worn through:o

the handle tappers nicely front to back when looked at from the top or bottom, but I should have thickened it just a shade more up and down and maybe made it a 1/4 longer. Lessons learned for the next time around. Right now the balance point is right at the point in the bolster so even though its a heavy knife it doesn't feel that way in the hand
