My First Knife WIP

Are you sure about that Gorilla Glue thing? From what I've read it's super strong stuff but can be a bear to work with since it expands a bit as it's curing. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought I remember hearing mixed emotions about it.

The gorilla glue should be ok, if I clamp well. Being that it is a fulll tang knife the glue will have someplace to esscape as it cures

I haven't gone through the whole thing but I got this from a link in that "other" forum ;) here. Apparently it's a pretty in depth study of glues. When I get a little time to kill I plan on going through it.

I read the glue wars here and have read what others are using, to me Gorilla Glue has the toughness I am looking for and is easy for me to get. So I am up early in anticipation of my knives showing up today, I feel like a little kid on Christmas morning:p

Nice work! I myself am on my first project and I can't say that my blanks turned out half as good as yours. Keep up the good work!!! I'm really looking forward to those bowies.

Thanks, I spent a lot of time planning and getting advice on here before I even started, any success I have I owe to the members here for giving good advice.
Heres hoping the blanks come back tomorrow and I can get back at them asap

SO my first two born are back from Rob, so daddy is happy now. They aren't as shiney as they were when they left, but they are jst as smooth and hard now. Time for the for the sanding to start again.

So here they are in thier current state

Want even tryig to do much else and they are starting to shine. Doesn't really show in the pictures but you can see clear reflections when in line with the sanding, by the time I get to 1200 grit they will almost be mirrors:eek:

Have to say it again Thanks Rob at Knifemaker.ca, don't think I could have been more happy with what I got.

I believe you want Gorilla Super Glue, not regular Gorilla Glue. Gorilla glue expands. I tried it once clamping it tight, but it didn't hold like I had expected. Here's more than you'll ever want to know:

I'm using Danish oil on a curly koa handle now and a pink ivory handle. It's a bit of a process, but I'm about 1/2 way through. Here's another excellent tutorial Phil turned me on to:

So I decides to put an edge on the knife that I cleaned the scale off of to make sure that I didn't leave it too thick to be able to sharpen it. Well it took a bit, but it's sharp. sharp enough to shave arm hair, slice paper, and shave letters off of paper. And I haven't even taken it to my usual sharpness. I am going to leave it sharp and play with it tomorrow to see how long the edge lasts, then after work I will dull it all the way and start sanding to 1200,then polishing. With any luck I will be on the handle by Monday

I a not sure about Gorilla super glue, I want something with a little flex to it. Even though I am going to great leangths to make it shiney and pretty, it will be a heavey use knife.

:D Do I smell fresh blood? :D

Rob!

Hopefully no blood will be spilled today, I am going to run the edge over my diamond stone till I see a flat edge once work is done.
You know first knife I had to jump ahead a couple of steps and make sure I was doing things right.

If you haven't drawn blood yet, you're not doing it right.:D

Very impressive work for a first time... as a newb myself, seeing your work makes me want to throw my tools away.:o:)

I drew blood a while ago, stabbed the end of my thumb while sanding the blanks before ht:o

I also have a nice slice in the end of a finger from sharpening it, luckly my hands are so calused that its just a slice no pain or blood on that one. Darn cat jumped up on my lap to see what I was doing:grumpy:

PS any one want a free cat, real loving and curious

When the blood starts getting all over the piece I'm working on, I'll usually put on a band-aid.:D

Your doing such a nice job on these... I'm really enjoying watching your progress.

Nothing beats a good WIP thread!:)

Its been fun doing it, think I am hooked now:o, have a gas forge in the works too now, but no WIP on that.

I cut down about 6 bike boxes with the knife this morning so they would fit in the bin out back. The knife was still hair popping sharp, no burrs or dead spots on it, then hacked and carved a piece of 2X4, not as sharp but still more then usable. Then I battoned it though another chunk of 2X4 a couple of times, no cracks, chips or imperfections any where and still reasonablely sharp, decided that was enough of a test and dulled it out on the course diamond stone. Even that was a test, took about 1/2 hour to get it to what I would call safe.
My conclutions are that my design is sound, so that template is getting put in the keepers folder, and Rob's HT is top notch:thumbup::thumbup:. I think that even when I start forging that I will still send most of my stuff to him for that all important stage.

Rob!
No blood totay, but after my impromptou testing session I noticed I managed to scratch it up a bit, with the diamonfd stone. So I spent the afternoon backing up to 320 grit and sanding up to 600. I really see why everone was saying "make sure you get all the scratches out before HT.it took some serious time to get it back to the original 400 grit finish, about 3 hours in total, getting to 600 only took a shade over 1 hour, but I was answering emails during that time.
I have a MTB race organizers meeting tomorrow morning and don't know how long that will take, but right after I am going to buy more sandpaper. Hopefully I will have it ready for the buffer and compound by sunday night.

Sounds like you are having fun useing it already.
if you plan to continue you might think about a satin finish, once you start using it when finished it will get scratched up some. Might save you some time and sandpaper, course i am not a big sander myself, but if it is a Zen thing with you then rock on.
Gotta say it is a nice looking blank, any thoughts of scales.
Cheers Ron. .
