My friend loaded stainless in a dishwasher, and this happened…

If you listen to online "experts" they will convince you that Carbon steel is the best for kitchen use and that if you put a Stainless steel knife in the dishwasher it will immediately go blunt and the handles will fall off.

I have kitchen knives from Japan, Thailand, France, Portugal, Germany, China, Switzerland some cheap some not. They all get used regularly, some for over 30 years, getting covered in blood and sugar and fat and, they all go in the dishwasher to get cleaned.

They seemed to have survived fine.

Some tips - I use a dishwasher with a top cutlery shelf, so each knife is separated from the rest (unlike in a basket) so the blades do not bump, I take them out right after the dishwasher finishes and dry them (stored on magnetic strips). Every few years I may see a rust spot from the salt or the powder not being rinsed off properly or from something that remained stuck on the blade, but his is very minor and uncommon. I sharpen them regularly, but I enjoy it anyway.

The wooden handles may need a new layer of varnish etc. every decade and some aluminium rivets or decorations will go cloudy. The plastic and stainless parts are as good as new in general.

The OP picture looks like some powder stuck to the blade.

Hate to be that guy, but if looking to shave a few pennies but still get quality, should have went with F.Dicks or even Victorinox over Dexter Russell...
Dime for dime, Every single time... (my 2 cents)

I work in our church kitchen, and run everything from junk to Cutco / Case in a commercial Hobart…no problemo.
It hurts my heart, but volume and timing is everything.

Maybe the dishwasher wasn’t working properly and did not rinse off the soap.

Agreed that it doesn’t look like any rusted blade that I’ve ever seen, unfortunately it’s rust, to be sure.

ETA: do you guys mean the powder stuck to the blade and caused rust?

Yeah, dishwashers have their place. I’d never do it with my own cutlery, but I go to great lengths to protect my edges.

My in laws wash their blunt steel in the dish washer and it doesn’t bother me. My mother now washes hers by hand after years of begging her to, but I watch her go on and drop the edges on the metal drying rack.

This day in age, I think products branded “stainless” and no “hand wash” warning on the package should be assumed to go in the dishwasher.

Looking at the photo and zooming in, that knife looks very poorly made Out of very poor quality steel stock.
The machining marks and pitting in areas that aren’t rusted look like something I could make at home (just not very well) on my belt sander. Just look at the edge for example. That’s a new factory knife?
You said it was from a factory store but it looks like a cheap knockoff from you know where to me. Really, not even that good.
What does the store say about it?

I’ve used Victorinox and thought well of them, and read good things about F Dicks. I have regrets in my recommendation.

I put the build quality under victorinox, but I’ve been very satisfied with my Dexter Russell. Their chef’s pairing knife is ugly as hell, but it’s my favorite pairing knife.

Literally in the factory in Southbridge, MA. They have their bottom tier line made in China, but those are marked as such. These packages say proudly “Made in USA”. It’s their Sofgrip line.

It’s the standard quality from Dexter Russell- nothing to write home about, but I’ve had good luck with the performance for the buck. I’m pretty disappointed they couldn’t handle a trip through the washer.

Don't put your knives in the dishwasher. That's what I think.

How do you feel about putting spreaders, cake servers, turners, spatulas, carving forks or dough knives in the dishwasher?

All for sale at Dexter Russell, all made out of DEXSTEEL, and I bet you wouldn’t think twice about those objects in the dishwasher.

We call them "Blueies".

If it has a riveted or moulded grip it gets had washed. Only tools that go in the dishwasher and butter knives, spoons, forks, and one piece silicone/plastic stuff.

Assuming the dishwasher was properly loaded and operational , IMO "stainless " kitchenware should not rust so extensively from one washing .
