My friend loaded stainless in a dishwasher, and this happened…

Sueing may be the extreme end game . . .how much is involved? Is it worth being right in court?

But I might want the maker to replace the items outright or at a at-cost discount . . .something like that first before callin a lawyer. It might help to show them a link to this site and this thread.

If they are responsive to your problem, it could be a strong story of customer support. If they won't make any gesture to make it right, this could be a never-ending story of corporate neglect that your grandchildren will roll their eyes over whenever you retell it. . . .and repost it everywhere on the internet. . . .with the pictures.

Ask me about my experience with Randall Made.

My steel dog dishes have gotten rust spots in a dishwasher. I assume they're pretty brutal on whatever you put in them for that to happen to such a rust resistant steel as they use on those.

Agreed that it doesn’t look like any rusted blade that I’ve ever seen, unfortunately it’s rust, to be sure.

ETA: do you guys mean the powder stuck to the blade and caused rust?
Powder or liquid soap. Dishwasher soap is caustic. It takes strong chemistry to get food off unrinsed dishes :)

I would throw them in the trash; the paring knives are under $3 a knife. I put Victorinox knives in the dishwasher all the time and some are over 40 years old with no staining or rust whatsoever.

Very helpful- I’ll make sure he sees that.

I don’t know which pairing knives you’re looking at, but the sanisafe are around 6-10

I have never heard of Dexter Knives before but the place I buy some of my knives from has the model DX31436 / P40843 for $2.56. The Chef's knife model 31600B is $13.85. Even their wood handled models are from $12.90 to $18.08. Not exactly top of the line kitchen knives. And neither are Victorinox but they certainly hold up better than those do; even Tramontina knives made in Brazil will hold up better than those Dexters. And a similar Victorinox Paring knife VN50603S made is Switzerland is $4.02. I know Scuba Divers that use them as a regular diving knife and they have not rusted. I really does not matter what the cost of that knife was $3 or $10; if it did that after one washing I would not own it. I would either return it to the store or the company and even if they did not give my money back I would not take it back. If they would not take it I would break it in half and toss it in the trash. There are plenty of decent kitchen knives out there in all price ranges.

Well, I wouldn’t discount a knife just because of its ability to avoid rusting in a dishwasher, personally.
Just some education for you…
The model you’re referring to is this:

This knife is made in China. It’s the dexter basics tier. The following is the classic sanisafe chef’s pairing knife.

Made right here in the USA. There are serrated versions of this knife they call “net knives” due to their popularity in the fishing industry.
I have a couple Victorinox pairing knives and a Dexter Russell. I like them both, and neither have let me down. I like the DEXSTEEL a little better, personally, but I don’t stick my knives in the dishwasher.

And I like them so much, I bought my sister in law these for her birthday. They are a bit higher quality.

Today, while helping my in-laws move, they treated us to pizza… lo and behold I peer in the window… Dexter Russel pizza knife! More just a comment on their relevance. Didn’t look rusty to me.

So you might really require rust-proofing, but there’s evidence the product is sufficient for many of us, myself included.

They are good knives. I have a worn diamond plate, if they show any rust, I lay them flat on the diamond plate and clean the rust off.

Some rust more than others I have no explanation.

That seems to be the common theme. Most of my knives are carbon steel, so I suppose I don’t need anything special

I don't need any education on crappy kitchen knives I don't buy them. It may not be the same model but the point is that it turned to crap under very little stress. Like I said if I want a cheap kitchen knife Victorinox and Tramontia work nicely, they hold an edge fairly well and they do not rust in the dishwasher. That is all the education I need on this subject. Why settle for something inferior.
