My Frosts Mora Clipper Broke

Grant,

I think your use of the knife was perfectly reasonable. Well within its intended scope of use. You may want to contact frost's about a warranty claim (though on an $8 knife it seems like the time spent would be more valuable.)

You may want to consider going to a thicker (1/8") scandi grind knife, like the KAresuando Ravan or the Helle Fjellkniven. Shown here with some mora for comparison.

Here is a spine shot:

They are a little more than the mora (under $40) at www.ragweedforge.com

When you are ready, you can step up to a semi custom knife such as these:

That is assuming you want to stay with the scandi grind. If you decide to move to the full flat grind, or a convex grind your choices in knives is huge!

A nice scandi grind wood peeling knife and a small axe, examplified by the Gransfors Small Forest Axe are an excellent woods walking pair!!

I deal in Both Frosts and Eriksons and you definately had a carbon model if the handle was red and covered with black like the blue and black model pictured in Dicers photos.
Each blade is individually tested in the factory so as far as one being hardened too much I am not sure about that I would be happy to take a look at the blade for you. If you are interested in trying a redhandled one or another clipper I would be happy to replace the knife for you FREE. I am currently waiting on a shipment of Frosts and have a group of Erikssons in just contact me.

As for the Triflex they are the 780 models looking exactly like the 700 series with plastic handle as well the come in the 680s This is a modefied carbon steel is best described as a material between laminated steel and plain carbon steel they have a hardness between 59-60RC. They are less flexable then the other laminates and will NOT allow bending.as lamintaes do.

If you are apt to bend your knives then Laminates are the way to go in these lines I have purposlly bent and re straightened the laminates just to see the results and they are out standing n the way they will come back. Granted I ahve neve kinke one but they take a general broad bend very well.

A link to my site use my email to contact me.

do you know a site that sells the 780 triflex? Can it throw a spark like the carbon steel ones if hit hard against a rock? Thanks

In the UK : http://www.survivalschool.co.uk/

As for the rock thing, I've never tried. I'm not sure they're carbon steel. They do seem to stain a little, but as I always keep my knives pretty dry, I don't know. They take a great edge and keep it, though. That's a known fact for me.

Cheers,

David

Hey David,

What is the difference between the Triflex and the regular laminated Frosts? What kind of steel is it?

Thanks.

- Frank
Triflex seems to be less brittle and a little more flexible. I'm not sure if it's stainless, carbon or a mix of both (maybe a carbon layer sandwiched in stainless?)...

It doesn't take or keep an edge as good as regular laminated steel... but it's still well above most knives I know, even in the 100$ range.

Cheers,

David

Ya he has mailed out free knife for me, it's very kind of him, he paid for the shipping too. Seems like a good person to give business too.

Since there is some confusion as to what the triflex is, here it is, straight from the horse's mouth:

http://www.frosts.se/quality_uk_main.html

Triflex (T)
This modified carbon steel is best described as a material between laminated steel and plain carbon steel hardened to HRC 59-60 with a softer surface that improves the tensile strength considerably.
Though it will not allow bending as laminated steel.

What would you recommend eithere the howling rat or the bandicoot, think I might get one later this summer.

Hey Grant....

Yaa that was really nice of him...However it doesn't surprise me, thats the type of person he is.

He got me hooked on Frost and Eriksson knives...:) The Mora Pimp as he shall now be known....

As far as the Swamper goes...
Great blade either way.... I have a Coot and use it quite a bit...The HR would be my next obvious purchase...

.. have you written a book, and what about?

In progress, a couple, one about popular knife myths (sharp edges are weak, kydex is tough, etc.), another about performance (where does it come from), how to select a knife (what to look for depending on what you need, who makes the best/worse), that kind of thing.

Longbow....

Don't bother sitting down,,it'll be a Real quick read. Wonder if it'll have pictures.. ?

Hey Lonbow...

You don't even have to go that far....

Any 6-7 year old that has ever read a Marvel comic book should be able to translate it for you quickly....

LMAO

Maybe Chapters or Indigo will carry it.. LOL

Abe will be interested to know how it's working for you...

You guys are sure rough on those blades.. :)

Cliff I am working on a definate answer to your question I have seen the bending test but I want to get a definate reply on the quality assurance process as it aplies to each blade.

Normark makes an excellent sheath for any of you knives and needs perhaps too good because we never seem to be able to hold onto a custom sheath for the swedish knives long enough so I can have one for myself and I am the dealer. :)

So if I get you a free knife can I have a sheath I know this will probably require you make one in your sleep btu after seeing so many go through my hands I want one for myself.

He has been good to me if I come to him with a knife he figures out what to do and i have quite a few of his sheaths he just needs to clone himself.
