My Frosts Mora Clipper Broke

i haven't much experience yet, is the howling rat good for skinning animals, like a deer? I didn't really realize how long the blade was, 4.5 inches is long.ww

Grant, it's only a half inch longer than your Clipper. The difference is it's thicker and you will probably have to rework the edge to fit your needs. I would say that it could perform all the tasks the Clipper did easily.

The edge on the Howling Rat is not as acute as a typical puukko. The Howling Rat I had came NIB with an edge 0.030-0.040" thick, ground at 17-18 degrees per side. Typical puukkos are ~10 degrees per side. The full flat grind on the HR compensates for this somewhat, but the cutting ability could be improved by adding a relief grind. Of course the HR is not intended as a pure light cutting knife which is why the edge isn't that thin to begin with. It isn't difficult to thin it out however if you want to further optomize the cutting ability for light work.

Fastest way would be a belt sander, 1-2 passes per side, so a few seconds. Next would be the same belt, without the sander glued to a piece of hardwood, making a very coarse file/hone. Last would be a very coarse waterstone, topped off with some 80 grit lapping compound.
