My hike to the highest peak in the lower 48 PIC HEAVY

Thanks for the pics. What kind of hat are you wearing? Any good in heat?

It's a Columbia brand booney hat. I don't remember what it's specific name is. It is made for sun and heat. UPF30, very light, and drys extremely quickly. It breathes pretty well too. Crushable and packable (as long as you don't mind the brim looking funny for a while). I love it. I prefer it to cotton hats when I'm out in heat or a lot of sun for long periods of time.

Great pics! Looks like you had a great time hiking up there. Thanks for sharing it with us.

C Bryant,

Thanks for the pictures! I'm one of those crazy ones who hiked it in one day (14 years ago), and your photos bring back lots of good memories.

Awesome pictures and thread thanks. Noticed that storm coming your way. As a hypothetical, in a thunderstom, do you think the Whitney shelter would have protected you from lightning strikes???

:D

Thanks for that superb thread!

Columbia...nice. I have an in to the employee store. :D

Now if it only comes in my size...gigantor.:o

Big mountains, big walls, big sky - well worth the hike.

It has admittedly been a while since I was there (12 years) but I don't recall that many cables on the switchbacks.

Unfortunately it won't, lives have been lost because folks don't know or ignore the fact. It is grounded, but it won't save your life. Protocol is to get the hell off the summit ASAP if it even hints at lightening. If you get caught in a storm you ditch all metal and hunker down as low as you can get in the rocks, preferably off the summit and hope for the best.

Looks like an amazing trip! Great pics, and I bet you have stories for a lifetime. Thanks for sharing.

I should also note that you are lucky your girlfriend went along. My wife will have nothing to do with any hiking or backpacking, and it is the one thing I love to do. Oh well....

And you are right - your first campsite was too close to Mirror Lake. When you said you were above it, I thought you meant a good distance up the trail, not immediately above it. They don't allow camping there, and haven't for at least twelve years.

And where are the pics of all the monster trout in Consultation Lake? Without photographic evidence, I don't believe it happened!

That's Mt. Langley in the back.. We should plan to climb it next year. I've always wanted to but never did. I don't think John has been up there either. It's a little lower than Whitney but it's off trail toward the top. I think it would be a challenge.. I need to get in shape though.

Billy is right, it is an easy Class 1 if you choose the correct route. And I haven't been on top yet, if I'm still in this area next summer we'll have to do it.
