My idea of an ideal folder, for my neads. Whats yours ?

I tend to carry my folder this way. Presenting the knife edge forward point down.

Ideal folder for my needs? Well, lessee...needs- General cutting plus being the "Holy sh**" backup when I run out of ammo or somehow lose my pistol-

Probably a 4" G10 version of the Kershaw Storm, set for left handed carry, with a slightly thicker tip. VG10 would be fine as the steel choice, though the 13C27 on the storm does get nasty sharp in it's own right. Thin pocket profile, nasty blade shape, frame lock....yeah, that would cover pretty much everything.

My ideal folder would be art that performs. Something that looks wicked cool, but is also ergonomic and functions long and well. Something that catches the eye like a Sebenza with a unique graphic and cabochan, but with a higher end steel pushed to the limits, a more durable finish, and a more user friendly opening mechanism.

Thus far I've only been able to come up with a Nirk Tighe folder with M390 blade steel at Rc 62, a custom stonewashed finish, and a titanium Starlingear bead on the lanyard. Simply imagining it makes my mouth water.

For me: take the blade from an Insingo, put it on the handle from an SNG CC, and add a spyderco wire clip.

For me right now, a UKPK with a Para 2 blade shape. Or a Para 2 slipit with a 3" blade (handle scaled down as well). Or heck, just an orange UKPK (I like my foilage green one alot, but I want an orange now).

Wow. What a question.

Let's start with one that just appears in my had when I need it. Or at least, for a weapon, has at least an 8" or 9" inch blade but is only about 4" folded.

I have a fairly deep background in fencing, so I'm pretty useless with reverse grips or swept blades where the point is far out of line. Just not my style, thanks.

These days I carry more for general/tool use than weaponry anyway. We all hope that whatever we carry will do if it comes to combat, but very often staying alive is more about wood, fire, shelter, food, general utility. For versatility I'm also in the ZT0551 camp, so far it's the best folder I've ever owned (for my use), and I've owned a lot, some more expensive. I've got an OD frag-pattern scale on it and have a Ti clip on order, so I'm on the way to putting more money into it than it cost (as I have with some Griptilians).

I would probably like it better if it were just a LITTLE larger, like another quarter-inch of blade length... but scaled up, not elongated and morphed into something a bit more tactical as the upcoming 0560 seems to be.

I won't ask for much...I just wish more folders would have a deep pocket clip.

I know that's increasingly popular, but I don't get it.

Take the ZT0560/0561... all of this effort into detents, ball bearings and flippers to make it faster to deploy, then attach a pocket clip that buries it so it's slower?

I "get" the desire for concealment, but I'm not really buying the solution. From long experience I know that easily TEN TIMES more people spot a silver pocket clip than spot a black one. I've even had both on the exact same knife, it confirmed that impression. Making it deeper/slower, but keeping it bright and very easy to spot just makes no sense to me.

here ya are ed, i sent you an email also, i know the thread is over a month old but i figured you come back here anyway,

I just got a " religious moment" seeing that design Peter R.! If it comes into being. . . WOW!

Well I'd obviously want it black :D
I work in a semi-formal business environment. I can't have a knife sticking a inch out of my pocket. So my options are either a deep clip, remove the clip and just plop it in my pocket. Once I am outside of work, I have no issues with the top of the knife sticking out of my pocket a bit. And if it was an inconspicuous deep black pocket clip, most people would just think it's a pen.

ok for grippiness with gloves and blood and water and mud ect best bet is rough textured g10. so maybe a thick linerlock with g10 scales is best. jimp the hell out of it! i can sharpen the last 3/8ths of the top swedge on this model and it wont destroy your pants. if you prefer a thinner blade, 5/32 is a good idea in 3v. super tough and penetration should be stellar. as for quick ddeployment in the draw method you prefer, i havent figured it out yet.

Hmm. I've worked in a LOT of different environments, from suit-and-tie (for 11 years) to "casual", as in guys in shorts and flip-flops (where I am now, in fact). In the more formal places, though, you'd be taking a heck of a risk having ANY clue visible that you were carrying anything. "Not acceptable" is putting it mildly. One of the least things that could happen is losing your job.

In a government-rented building I once had a lady threaten to "turn me in" for a pair of folding sewing scissors on my keychain, about 2.5" overall (unfolded). They had already confiscated the scissors from the desk sets, you had to borrow a pair from the receptionist if you wanted to cut anything.

YMMV, that's just been my experience.

Peter, go ahead and make that bad boy! I want one! I like everything about it. Lol!!! Based on Ed's line of work I think your circular G10 pattern would provide good grip. Could we add a Spyder hole? It would work better with gloves since Ed uses gloves.
Ed, here is the G10 pattern I was speaking of.

Ed likes to stab things and works in a hot environment so a coated 3v blade would be a perfect match for him.
I'm game if you are brother!

Ed, here is Peter's Spyderhole. I think it perfect for gloves!

My ideal folder would be the blade shape I love the best , out of all my knives. Kershaw's Starky Ridge

I love the needle-like point , the deep belly , lack of recurve or serrations. This blade shape is perfect for me , if I could have one in a framelock I would be happier than a clam.
I did try to see what it would cost to have my Starky converted into a framelock but it is over my budget right now.

Tostig

if u dont mind a swedge, alias I has same blade shape and ti framelock. I got one recently, and it's off the chain.

I'd buy one if...

5" blade from .200" S35vn. Screws are 4-40 torx. Ti framelock is from .160" with a >.070 cut out. Pivot is .250" and PB bushings. Pocket clip is positioned so there is 1.5" of handle sticking out of the pocket.

And waved.

Add to this...

Solid Ti backspacer
Lanyard hole
Random pattern texturing on both handle slabs (take a sledgehammer to it so it looks like forge marks)
.250" stop pin
Carbidize lock surfaces

You can even engrave the blade with "Demko Killer" cuz that's what this BMF is gonna be!!!
