My knife can change school policy!!!

Ridiculous. I carried a knife in my pocket as a student when I was school. It wasn't until Columbine that all of this zero tolerance nonsense started and it hasn't prevented anything.

My workplace has a zero tolerance policy in place also. This is a policy, as others have mentioned, to cover the company's ass. I believe this type of policy is put in place in many circumstances for that reason alone, and is not enforced unless deemed necessary.

I like eating an apple daily with my lunch and I eat them in slices. Yes, despite the disbelief of a few others here, my Southard is doing the slicing. ;)

Incidentally, I don't care for spoiled fruit, browned apples, blackened banana. I cut up fruit ahead of time, generally an apple and a pear, put them in a plastic container in the refrigerator. They don't brown because I sprinkle them with a little lemon juice and shake them up before I put them away.

It's been a good read!

Maybe I missed this, but how did the board even know/make this an issue? Did someone see you cutting the apple and tell someone else or, someone saw the apple was cut and marveled at how that was possible?

They noticed the apple had been cut after my wife and I had left the premises. And there's a lot of grade levels at the school but only 4 year olds in the class.

John, you and I discussed this thread via PM---we both had a good laugh out of it really---where this thread kind of took on it's own life etc...

But the only good thing about the post above is I learned your real nick name:confused:

You been hidin out on us buddy....errrr...I mean SKIPPY:p:D

And here I thought I really knew you;):D

Hahahaha damn Paul, I wasn't expecting that! I'm gonna have to leave the country now! No one must know my secret.

LOL x2. First, the knife in the foreground. Second - apparently the person who put that campaign together doesn't realize that "Weapons Free" is slang for "Open Fire" in many circles. A "Weapons Free" workplace takes on an entirely different meaning in that context.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Weapons Free

For the record, I'm not a rule breaker, and I don't advocate that people break rules just because they don't agree with them. For example, I was at the DMV today and left my 3" blade in the car because I know their policy is 2.5" or smaller. I think it's a dumb rule. And I know they don't check. But I respected it anyway.

Ah...for the old days...
Throughout high school, we boys would bring our shotguns to school in the morning and stack them in the secretary's office, next to the principal's office.
We had great cornfields right across the street from our high-school, so many of us would go pheasant hunting after school and then walk home before dark. Never had an incident...

I don't think students should be allowed to bring knives to school. But just out of curiosity, do you think this little a-hole who decided it would be a good idea to assault a teacher would have followed a "no knives" policy? I do not.

This wasn't a student. It was a parent. BIG difference. And again, if a parent means to harm someone, is a "no knife" policy going to stop them? I think you need to reevaluate, and perhaps post armed guards at every entrance. Better yet just militarize your whole damn town in the name of safety.

The young man I refer to was not a parent...he was a student in teachers college, as I mentioned in my post.

Those who say "Zero-tolerance rules are stupid because they won't stop bad people from carrying weapons onto campus" are only looking at the issue from one perspective. "Zero-tolerance" policies aren't just about trying to keep weapons off school campus, they are also about protecting the school district from lawsuits.

If a student brings a knife onto school property and uses it as a weapon, the school district can say that they had clear rules in place forbidding the carrying of knives onto school property. But if they had no such policy in place, some civil attorney could argue that because the school district had no policy in place forbidding the carrying of knives that this demonstrates a "permissive attitude" toward knives on the part of the district, and therefore the school district is partly liable for the harm caused by the knife. Civil law can be very tricky and based on odd technicalities, and having a "zero-tolerance" policy in place might very well save a school district from having to spend millions in civil judgements.

It's just like when a ladder manufacturer puts a sticker on their ladders that say "Do not stand on the top rung". Such a sticker isn't going to stop the idiots of the world from standing on the top rung, but it can protect the ladder manufacturer from lawsuits when the idiots fall and break their necks.

Zero-tolerance policies might seem frivolous and stupid, but considering how sue-happy people are in this country, can you really blame school districts for trying to protect themselves from frivolous lawsuits?

Yes, thanks. I intended to broach the subject of legalities which further compounds the responsibilities of the classroom teacher. It is mandated that any information that contravenes any of the "Safe-School guidelines be brought forward to the Administration.

Grownstar, this is off-topic but here goes anyway-

In regards to the sign about not spitting in the sink, it's easy to think a rule is stupid if you don't understand it.

A long time ago I worked in restaurants. And early in my restaurant career one of my responsibilities was cleaning the restrooms. Let me tell you, some people in this world are absolute pigs, especially when they know that they don't have to clean up after themselves. On many occasions a customer would hock a big wad of mucus into the sink like it was a spittoon, and make no effort to rinse it down the drain. After awhile, the mucus would dry out a little and become like a wad of glue clogging the drain screen. And then I would have to go in and clean it out, and it was a disgusting pain in the ass. It wouldn't surprise me if the custodial staff where you work have had the same experience.

If you've never had a job that required you to clean up the disgusting crud that people spew forth from their bodies, you are lucky (like I said, some people are pigs). Did you ever bother to ask the custodial staff why they posted that sign? Perhaps you will consider the matter from the custodians point of view rather than mocking their request and regarding it as stupid. Being a custodian is a rather unpleasant, low-paying job, and they have to deal with a lot of disgusting stuff. Just a thought from someone who once had to clean up after other people and has sympathy for others who do.:)

Back home when I was in high school my friend use to carry almost 10" fix blade on his hip whenever we went for nature (or any other) trip with the class with our teacher ! And I use to do that at the boot camp with my 6" fix blade ,few other guys had much bigger knives than me. We were using knives Axes and other tools with no problems, the only one who cut his finger off with the axe at the boot camp was one of our instructor because he was idiot lol (We were like 12-17 he was in his 30's) No ONE CARED about some knives.

@killgar, thanks for enlightening me, man. I actually have a few good buddies on the custodial staff and have heard the horror stories. I always clean up after myself, rinse the sink, flush the john and even wipe the seat down if I use it.

I totally get your point, though, and appreciate your thoughts.

Back to knives...how about that 0566? ;)

During my pre-K's class party last year, I hand my no10 Opinel to a mom to cut up all the bagels on the plates. After she was done cutting, she cleaned, closed it and hand it back to me. No body even blinked.

As large as the no 10, it's resemble a small kitchen utensil. Therefore not as threatening to the public. I also remembered having 6 in hunting knife on my belt on outing trips. Others had their pocket knives. Those came without one constantly asking us to cut stuffs for them.

This line is friggin' comedy gold. LOL Also, great pic Stab. I daresay one of those is far better than CRKT's "Eat'n Tool"!

John brother, your little girl is a cutie, good on you for being a great Dad helping his little girl out. It sucks that irresponsible people of limited intellect have ruined things for the rest of us and have required "the powers that be" to institute rules that make little rational sense...when applied towards rational people.
