My Knife Spooked My Co-worker

Knock off the "liberal" b.s.

This isn't a place to discuss politics per forum rules. Personally, I find your usage of the word offensive. It also makes you sound ignorant, and uneducated.

Seriously. Lumping people into stereotypes is silly and unproductive. I lean to the left more than the right and I have 3 knives on me including a fixed blade. While typing this at work. I'm also vehemently pro-gun. Using stereotypes just makes you look stupid.

I wouldn't worry about it. I would just keep pulling my knife as long as it was legal by law and by company rules. I have had similar comments made to me by office workers when I have to pull a big folder I am toting to do a cutting task. A guy commented to me one time on my knife and he was a plain ol' panzy. I just looked at him and shrugged and said "So?" I just looked at him more and intimidated him. One office secretary who complained about me using a big folder..I intentionally just rubbed it in more when I sat next to her in the break room a few weeks later after a road trip and pulled an RC-3 (now ESEE-3) to peel an apple.:p

Not an advisable comment to make. It could easily be taken as a threat. And regardless what the law may be regarding which knives may or may not be carried, comments like the one above could be grounds for investigations. Comments intended to scare people like that are a bad idea.
I guess that thumb wasn't a good indicator of sarcasm hmm?

But seriously, I would point out that a box cutter is just as capable of causing injury. Then I would ask her whether she seriously believes that a folding knife is more of a threat.

Agreed.

As for the op, showing off your knife at the workplace to a coworker IMO is a dumb thing to do. For one your not at work, which will catch peoples eye. This is your coworkers business IMO. Second, being all up and mighty about it serves no one including yourself. I think the mature thing to do would talk to your boss and see if another edc blade could be used. No offense but a large tactical blade to cut open a box? Give me a break. Use the right tool for the job and you won't have any problems. It's not about your rights it's about not being a dope:P

Well said ^^^

Whether you use a box cutter or folder really depends on what you do most of the day. I, for one, do not need to tote a box cutter. My folder will do the job it does and do many more things a box cutter will not do. Why tote both? That said....it cannot be always avoided that people see your knife...I agree on not brandishing it though.

I don't doubt they exist. I simply said I don't personally know of any, meaning ANY. The question was not about understanding guns and knives; it was about being afraid of knives. I tossed the guns in there for good measure, as I really do not personally know a single conservative who is afraid of them.

Is there a reason this thread isn't being moderated better for off topic political comments?

I'm getting pretty sick of the "conservative/liberal" douche-baggery around here lately.

STFU about liberals/conservatives. It's plainly obvious that those of you who are invoking the terms, don't know enough about either to know the difference.

someone lied to you, three inches is not large

Agreed. Heck, even a 3.5 inch blade on a folder to me is medium. I mean, look at what "small," and "large" is on kitchen knives. Of course if I toted one of them in from the break room to open something at work, they wouldn't say a thing. :D

For me, a 4.5" blade is medium and barely acceptable if I intend to use it "tactically".

To HELL with her. I got stabbed 6 times with a mark 2 knife. I have a problem walking for the rest of my life. The person stabbed me not the knife. Guess what I do for a hobbie?? I sell knifes on the net and the local gun and knife shows. If any one should be a knife hater I think it would be me. I carry a Kershaw leek and I won’t stop and if she don’t like her then go to blazes. Maybe if she got beat up really bad then she would say I wish I had a knife so I can protect my self. It sounds like she has never been jammed up to where she needed one. I was a commercial electrician for 19 years. I have always had a knife and I don’t know what I would have done with out one. A knife is just a weapon they are tools for the trades and every day use for other people but there is that 10% that abuse if for the rest of us. I am just glad that she is up there with you instead of down here working with me.

If I had a job that had rules that were set down in writing, I'd certainly familiarize myself with them, maybe even have a one on one with HR to get clarification followed up by an email that I would then print off and save off site (was in corporate america long enough to know how the game is played) after that I'd carry my knife everyday just like I do now.
Somebody doesn't like it - Tough.
Sounds to me like there was more going on then meets the eye. Either bad blood between co-workers OR a busy-body. If someone really gets that frazzled by a pocket knife they have deeper issues.
First question is; What is the Company policy.
Second is (depending on the answer to that question) When does one persons "Rights" supercede anothers.
A little common sense would help as well.

Post Craigs List ads all over the country for a $20 iPod with her cell number, then wait for someone else to complain about her constant personal calls during work hours haha. Sweet passive aggressive spiteful revenge haha.

or keep buying her knife calendars for her birthday and Christmas haha "oh yeah I forgot, sorry" lol

Just a thought. My BM 760 scared the crap out of my girlfriend's grandmother, but she didn't think twice about my 710 (non coated). Thoughts?

Exactly. Some people HAVE to carry knives. Their job position requires it and they cannot get by without one during the day.

This thread brings up a lot of interesting points about fear, irrational thinking, and how we educate people.

I personally think that knives/guns are so highly fictionalized and portrayed in movies/tv in a non realistic fashion, that people have completely irrational anxieties about them.

Even a few friends, when we've camped before, have admitted to being nervous when I had a 4" knife out making tinder.

I think the woman's reaction is understandable, not surprising, yet also irrational.

It's sad we don't train people better these days to understand this kind of thing.

My caring and compassion is considerable but not infinite.

It ends abruptly at the point where it infringes on my sense of reasonableness
I say reasonableness because the concept of "Rights" is over used, not universally well understood and not as broad as most think.
Most of what people claim as "Rights" are in fact only privileges.
Rights are listed in a fairly well known document and the stuff of debate among constitutional scholars and the Supreme Court on a fairly regular basis.

I agree with this statement.

I carry a blade to work everyday...pro-gun and a liberal. I would never show my knife to a co-worker in an open workspace, especially knowing other people are walking around. That blade may be legal in your state and allowed at your company, but that could quickly change if you abuse it.
