My List of Steels in order for Edge Retention So Far

Interesting. I found my M4 Gayle Bradley to stay sharp (as in really polished sharp) longer than a VG10 Delica.

Of course, lots of variables. I wish I had as many knives to test :(

Ankerson,

Have you tested 154cm and if not do you think that it would be significantly different?

If you haven't tested a 154cm blade, maybe I can send you one (I'll pay shipping both ways) if you would be interested in testing.

I had one awhile back, they are very close in edge retention if it's good 154CM (There was some bad stuff out), but I feel CPM 154 has a slight edge. The only way I would beable to tell the difference would be to cut with both steels until they were completely dull and that would take a very long time.

I really need to test Spyderco's S30V and S90V to see were they are on the list. Also M390, BG-42 and ATS-34 along with D2.

The purpose of my tests is to see what steels hold a keen edge as in Razor sharp edge. :)

I would think that ats-34 would be about the same as 154cm, no?

Wouldn't m390 be very similar to duratech 20?

ATS-34 is close, or supposed to be to 154CM so I am not really that worried about it. :)

M390 would be interesting because it's rated so high by so many.

Duratech 20CV is an SOB to sharpen if you don't have an Edge Pro or Diamonds if you have to remove some steel, it's extremely abrasion resistant, it will take an extremely fine edge and get very sharp.

It's right up there with ZDP-189 in PITA to reprofile.

Yeah, quit messing around with that ersatz stuff and get some real S30V! :D

I have this knife coming soon, a custom I think in S30V that I could run some tests on getting it all scratched up..... ROFL  :D

J/K. ;) :)

It would be interesting to know which brands the steel samples came from. Several of the steels are used by multiple brands and the differences might be worth noting. <--Reason to buy more knives :D

I know, but I didn't want to point any fingers. LOL

Spyderco

ZDP - 189
VG-10
CPM M4
CPM S35VN

CPM 154 was my Custom Demko

S30V was both ZT and Strider (2 Knives tested)

VG-1 and AUS-8 was Cold Steel

20CV was SOG

I can't sharpen worth a crap, I got to figure that out. I saw the edge on your cpm154 on the demko, looked gorgeous.

Just my observation, but tests like this seem to be more a test of overall knife design than just the steel. Of course, when Cliff Stamp tested the Deerhunters in 3 different steels, they had different geometries. Not much, but different.

Thanks for taking the time. I personaly love a steel that holds it's razor edge a long time since I rarely completely dull a knife.

How was the initial sharpness of each blade determined?

VG-10 holding a finer edge longer than CPM M4, I just don't see how that is possible given my experiences with both.

cardboard can be very inconsistant with materials inside.. i want a rematch of m4 vs zdp189

He's not dulling the knife guys, he's testing the ability to hold an extremely fine edge for a long period of time.

M4 will degrade into a toothy carbide edge. It will still cut great, but it won't shave hair.

I agree.

It always intersting to see some kind of standardized testing,

...but this is more a test of knife blades (i.e., Edge Geometry, Heat Treatment and Metallurgy) then the steel itself.
