brians: Man! I like that Grohmann folder! I'm still toying with the idea of getting a flat-ground #3...I like that knife, and I think the flat-grind would be a great slicer.

Liam, I've been impressed with the #3's (not the flat ground ones) ever since coming across them with the CAF's Air Defense aircrews back in the 70's. They were all issued them as survival knives...beat our thick-bladed, bowie-type Camillus knives every which way! Great knives!

Nice! A little history there. As different as two fixed blade knives can get, eh?
Anyone pick one up in a friendly poker game? ;)

There definitely was some trading going on! However, I believe your CAF guys were a little too intelligent to swap for one of our survival knives! I'm sure more than a couple made it onto a poker table! Sure wish I could have picked one up myself. They were carried in a full-flap sheath.

Can anyone compare the slicing abilities of the flat vs regular ground grohmann's of the same model? I would like to know - is there a significant difference?

Just talked to my cousin today, his gf got him the soldiers model for christmas.
Looks like I better get one of those next so we can compare them:D

My late father's Canadian Airforce issue circa 1960's. It's one of my most prized heirlooms, and yet I feel compelled to use it often.
It is the #3 Boat Knife.

I lost track of how many deer and moose this knife has gutted and skinned.

Wow, that's great. I really like the sheath, I wonder if the regular one will form like that naturally over the years.

I think my dad formed the sheath with his hands after soaking it in warm water. Then he treated it with that stinky mink oil stuff.

I have a #3 boat knife, i love it 8)

Heck i dosent hurt that their not far away from my hometown either

My #3 is the same as the current issue Candian military, with the overlap sheath.

Compared to a Barriver Gameskeeper i find my self gravitating to the #3 alot more then i would have guessed.

That's a great looking knife, Liam! I'm looking at the edge in your second picture from the top: Is that a convex ground edge or just a very fine v-grind?

beeperboy, that's a GREAT knife you have there! And, to top it off, it belonged to your father! I spent a fair amount of time , back in my younger years in USAF Air Defense Command, at Chatham, Bagotville, Cold Lake and Goose Bay. I saw a lot of those fine #3's being carried by CAF personnel.

It's a very fine v grind, I am going to put a convex edge on it as soon as I get some sandpaper.
Beeperboy, got my sheath molded, worked great. It fits in much better.
