My new Manix, review and observations

The damage will look different generally, is it jagged or circular, if you look at the edge straight on, is it well aligned or bent

-Cliff

It is jagged, and edge into it is pretty well aligned. It looks like just pure chipping. Of course I have crap for brains when in comes to this, maybe you can help interpret those results.

That sounds like a chip to me which is interesting consider the low strain rate. You might want to collect these notes and author or collaborate on a article on metal cutting with knives.

I was frankly surprised with the behavior given what I have read about INFI. I will keep my notes on the edge, and will keep good notes on my future tests, including what the edge looks like during the testing, not just after. I can think of a good place to post the article, also. I am also thinking about writing the other article on my newbie learnings like you mentioned, Cliff, hopefully I can work that in, too. I still have a small amount of the same twist tie, after I get a chance I will refinish the edge, and maybe try 4 different cutting backgrounds with pieces of the twist tie and see what happens. I have enough for at least 16 cuts, so I can try 4 cuts per surface. I am thinking a plastic cutting board, trying to find an extremely hard wood board (we already know what my soft wood board does with the edge), and a couple different metals. Any suggestions? Sodak, It's your knife, so feel free to chime in also. Anyone with technique or test procedure suggestions please chime in, especially finish and angle (I am thinking 20 degree micro bevel brought up to Spyderco Ultra Fine finish).

PS, my wife is doing fine after surgery. Even so, this experiment will have to wait a couple weeks as she is recovering, but I look forward to it. She and the baby are napping now so I have the opportunity to relax on the computer a little, so please post suggestions and I will try to get to it ASAP.

Best part of this post in my arrogant opinion.

By far the best and most important for me, as well. I like my knives and sharpening (OK, they are an obsessive hobby to me), but it means nothing to me compared to my family. NOTHING means as much to me as my family. My wife kind of took a nap earlier when I posted, but was wired from her meds, but is lights out right now. The baby, amazingly, is still sleeping. Whatever my wife needs, whenever she needs it you can bet I'll drop what I'm doing and provide it for her. I just pray she has a speedy recovery, as it is much easier for me to be in pain myself than watch her hurt.

Glad she's doing well! Sounds like you're doing well with the tests. Chop, chop, chop! I'll be interested to see how the SR101 holds up to the infi with a hard backboard.

Can you two set up a streaming feed for this one? Or maybe the survivor posts the video? Better yet, Don King can promote it and put it on pay per view.

Streaming feed? Is that something people with broadband use? I'm thinking the survivor must edit the video into an animated gif.

Just for reference, here are Thom's sharpness results on my Manix and Byrd Cara Cara. He reprofiled both to about 10 degrees per side, and then brought them up to these levels of sharpness on the yellow pages (measured from point of hold):

Manix: 2.73" ave, worst cut 2.63", best cut 2.88"

Cara Cara: 2.47" ave, worst cut 2.25", best cut 2.75"

Both very sharp, MUCH sharper than my factory Manix, and pretty close to a utility razor blade. Pretty damn good for such relatively thick edges compared to what I am honing these days (my Native and Cliff's U2).

Thom, you da man! You know, most people charge a lot of money to sharpen people's knives to levels like that. In fact, I bet most people who sharpen for a living can't match you. Career change time? Nah, it's more fun as a hobby and not your real work, huh?

Well, I finally bought a small Torx driver set (2 actually) at Harbor Freight, and relocated the clip to left hand tip up carry. When configured tip up the knife is much better on your hand when you reach in your pocket, as you no longer have the jimping and sharp edges hitting your hand, but the nice, smooth butt of the knife just sliding past your hand. Since my right pocket carries my wallet, I put a smaller knife in that pocket for easier extraction of the wallet, and the Manix in the left pocket leaves plenty of room for my hand to get my keys and change. Also, now the clip is less of an issue when making heavy right handed cuts, as it only bites a little bit of your finger tips, instead of seveerely biting your hand. I would still love to see an HD wire clip on this model, but I am much happier with how I have it configured now.
