My new SR1 and vertical blade play

I've had mine apart once, and the pocket clip off a couple of times for adjustments. No issues with the screws, and mine is rock solid vertically and horizontally. I'm going to take it apart again to RIT dye the scales, so we'll see how that goes, but so far it looks like I got a good one. I've been thinking about picking up a second one, but I might wait and see what further reports of issues come up before doing so. I hope these QC issues will be worked out in future batches.

MiL, next time better get your Cold Steel stuff from europe. I am working at the european Cold Steel distributor in germany.
If you had bought it there you would have gotten your replacement knife within 1 week.

At that time it was not available in Europe, probabaly still is not. New models are late in Europe. I remember how long it took for a transition from aus8 to cts-xhp. They like to sell the old stock here first , I guess. I wont even mention the price difference due to tax and more. ;) Maybe you know if its possible to send a knife to Cold Steel for waranty somewhere in EU? How is EU warranty handled?

Bad enough all the early trouble with the 4max, and I thought the sr1 would be perfect from day 1 now this ? Its been a big disappointment for sure.....

You would think the people making the knives, would thoroughly check them out , for lock up and at least be sure you can easily swap the pocket clip. Before the customer gets them into their hands and find out the much touted super heavy duty folders , have problems. I have a light weight Broken Skull, great knife no liners and it locks up solid. No clicking like this SR1 does, when tested with hand pressure. Rediculious.

Ive stated before on this forum that I've been buying and using Cold Steel from their inception . My impression is that their QC has seriously declined over the years . Still my favorite "go to first " source , but now I'm pleasantly surprised when there's nothing wrong !

I have an SR1 being shipped probably tomorrow from the online dealer. After seeing this thread I might call tomorrow and see if it cn be checked before it is shipped. I have around 10 CS knives with the triad lock and all seem to lock up tight. No blade play in any of them.
I had mixed feelings about getting a pocket knife as heavy as the SR1, especially when my Recon 1 s and Holdout 2 s are so strong at a much lighter weight. But I figured this would possibly be the strongest folder I would own. For all of its appeal, I can't see carrying around a 10 oz 4 Max, no matter how strong it is.

I just had to go check my triad locks after thinking about Jill s post about recently discovering the lock rock on her SR1 . All of my other CS lockups are completely solid.
I ve always been impressed with CS s fit and finish. Hopefully theses issues with the SR1 will be temporary and isolated to this model.
Hopefully mine will arrive with a tight lock up. I hate loose lockup on knives, even if it doesn't t hamper their strength or durability. I just appreciate well made equipment, including knives.

Well, mine is going back to US. After few emails exchanged with KnifePlus they been very helpfull and understanding and alowing me to return the knife even thou 2+ months have passed since purchase.(it took a while to have it re-shipped abroad) They are currently out of stock on these. I see some are available at BladeHQ, so I might give them a call and see if they can test few of these out and send me a good one. This knife is starting to drive me nutz! ;) How did that quote go: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. o_O

They won't find blade play unless they hold the handle tight in one hand and the blade towards the end in the other, then put a fair amount of up and down pressure on the blade. I thought mine was tight until I read this and checked in that manner. I doubt many vendors are going to check this way. I still say the people making these should know if a supposedly bad ass knife has any lock up issues.

On the one Im returning I dont even have to hold the blade. All I have to do is open the knife and shake it like using the hammer and I can feel the blade bouncing between lockpin and lockbar and hear it clicking faintly. I wish someone from Cold Steel would comment on this and let us know if it was a bad batch or they will make some revisions. Can someone PM CS or Demko and see what their opinion on this is? Words like "within tolerances" and "get the fixed blade" are coming to mind. ;)

Okay, please send email to customerservice@coldsteel.com and tell them your problem and if they are willing to give you a replacement knife via the european distributor. If they confirm, we and you just have to wait for their email about your customer replacement. Then, you will have a flawless SR1 within 1 week. It just depends on the time Cold Steel is contacting my company. Give it a try! This is the only way because you haven´t ordered directly from us.

Thanks k-shi. I just sent them an email. I can PM you what I wrote but I cant figure out how to send you a private message? Hopefully I get a positive answer from them in few days. This would be a best path sice you could maybe handpick a good SR1 for me. ;)

mine is no where near that bad. more like Jills. very slight but there.

What presence does Cold Steel have here? Do they ever come on and address these issues, like I've seen on the Spyderco forum? It would be nice to have some official word on what they think about this.

sometimes. they have a rep/ employee for a lack of a better term that participates and mods occasionally. usually they wont say much though.

Just like their own forum, they feel it is not the place to try to resolve customer service issues, and don't want anything they say "in the heat of the moment" to come back to bite them. I can understand that to a point, but sometimes they should at least say something...

They should take every one back with any blade play and give us new ones . If the cheaper models can be rock solid out of the box , this one definitely should be. I don't have any locking folders with vertical blade play, out of the box. Not even some very inexpensive models. There's no excuse for this other than sloppy workmanship.

So...I wrote that mine have no bladeplay...I bought two SR1s, one for myself and one as a gift. And now that I pushed on the blade the way Jill described it I noticed bladeplay on both knives :-(. I wish I had waited for the release through the European distributor....would make an exchange much easier

Yep, the blade goes downwards with a small amount of force. You can feel it move and it makes a slight clicking sound. Poor fit on the triad stop pin is what it feels like to me.
