My new ZDP Leek

Come on Kershaw, this is supposed to be super steel. I would expect at least a 15 degree primary, maybe even 10 and then the end user could put a microbevel on it. I have been running 10-12 degree primary(Edgepro) per side with a 15 degree microbevel(Sharpmaker). I don't want to put my expensive new knife straight on the wetstone.
My only complaint as well. Mine won't even shave my arm. When I have time it is off to the Sharpmaker to reprofile. Any one have any advice for me? Other than this I think this is one hell of a bargain and a perfect EDC.
Mine also makes a clicking sound when I am closing it, like the cam is popping or something, does anyone else notice this? Is it normal?
Thanks Thomas,
Jason

It is the torsion bar galling on the ZDP. You can try some graphite in there too, if you feel the need. It isn't going to hurt anything if you leave it alone. It may go away after a few thousand cycles.

jason, cycle it for a few days, if the click doesn't do away, let's look to get that back to the factory, and I will get it taken care of for you.

I have owned two leeks (just ordered the TI/ZDP to make 3). My current daily use leek is about 3 years old and still clicks when being closed. It clicks when it is between 45 and 10 degress closed. I beleave this is the tortion (sp) bar getting in position to re-open the knife. I would not worry about it, and consider it normal.

talk aboooot a dull blade-my zdp leek couldnt cut hot butter-
ive never bought such a dull knife-
kinda pissed i have to put a edge on a new blade before i even use it-

Most factory knives are sharpened by hand. Some get sharper than others.

I am pretty sure that the angle of sharpening had something to do with the steel. If you are not happy with it, either a) return it, I am sure the retailer would like to have one back in stock, b) learn how to sharpen a knife, and thank Kershaw for the opportunity to work on your sharpening skills,;) or c) jam the blade REALLY hard into your appendage of choice. This serves no real purpose, but it might be fun for some of you.

Buncha frigging ingrates. It is not what you are saying, but the whining way that it is being said.:grumpy:

Makes me sorry that I ever asked Thomas to post on this board, Rosconey, and CMSpeedy, simply put, you guys are a bunch of whiners.:grumpy:

Maybe so, but, simply put, in addition to being a whiner, publicly crying about afformentioned "dull ass blade" shows no class, and I am the "self loving king of no class", changed the asshat comment because it was not relevant to the discussion.

Lemme ask you something, Rosconey2, do you think that your response is going to help or encourage Kershaw to take on more of these "extremely difficult and expensive" projects?

did i mention anything about real qc issuses-noooooooo because there aint any a%$hat -just a dull ass blade

the et i had was sooooo sharp it cut me and i didnt know it -

i like the -"bunch of friggin ingrates"- "shows no class"-parts of your post-talk abooot the pot calling the kettle black- btw i dont have any class and am dam proud to say so-

if thomas takes this the wrong way -all he has to do is say so and i will let it die and say im sorry-
i doubt what ive written will change diddly squat with kershaw's ability to produce knives-

they make money from building products people want-
you also might want to remember its my money not yours that was spent-

WOW!! I did not know that stating the obvious truth about a knife would tick someone off. The graphite tip worked great for the lock, thanks for that. But the condescending way in which you addressed me was not acceptable. I always run across at least one a hole like you on forums. Now I know to steer clear of you. Later.

Actually, after browsing Kohai's previous posts I reallize that he thinks he is better than everyone on this site. You may own more knives than me, but you are the bigger a hole!!

I would think that comments about locks that are sticking or an AO mechanism clicking or a blade being a little dull from the factory would be the kind of feed back that Thomas and Kershaw appreciate hearing. If a company doesn't know there are minor issues with its product, they can't refine or fix these problems. With feed back like this, the consumer (us) and the manufacturer (Kershaw) win because in the end we get a better product. Just my $0.02...

You are right, TX.

I didn't imply that what was said was wrong, just the way it was said.

If I want to insult someone, I do it (right, CMSpuddy?).

IF I want an improvement in results, than my usual a-hole responses don't work. I have to try this thing called tact, and compromise. Yeah, I know its' hard and a lot of work, but the other way just doesn't work.

I am not better than everyone on this site, just you.

And, I own more knives, and probably drive a better car than you, but am short, fat and balding. It all works out in the end.

Good info folks.

Dull blades from Kershaw is not at all characteristic, especially on something so targeted for nit-picky folks like us here. If anyone is upset enough to get rid of theirs, please let me know. :D

Mistakes happen, I had a BM Morpho that had to be returned. Buy from reputable dealers and whenever possible go in person to choose from many.

I'll post back once mine is in hand and the drool is down to a trickle.

Chris

Dang folks, I go to a trade show for just a couple days, and look what happens.

rosconey, CM, sorry to hear your edges were not up to spec. I know it's a pain, but if you feel like sending them back, I promise to turn them screaming sharp, and get em back right away. It bums me out to hear that these were less than perfect. Sorry again.

Steven, go lay down by your dish.

Well, I dithered for buying one at $112.00 at GPK and they sold out, so I have ordered one at $200 from COUNTRY KNIVES INC. . They were supposed to be at the shop on Friday, but weren't delivered. Hoping the delivery will arrive on Monday and be shipped out on Monday or Tuesday.

I will remember the old adage 'he who hesitates is lost' next time. :)

NG and KC have them (NewGrapham and KnifeCenter) $125 and $149. KnifeWorks has it on the list, but temporary out of stock.

I still think that it is Sebenza killer. According to the wide line of variants of this model, it is probably one of the most popular Kershaw - Tomas correct me if I am wrong. It never have problem to be elegant and convinient, but now it has all attributes of topest knife.

It shaves my arm, but it is not as sharp as first Spyderco ZDP-knives, however it is made in US (second after W&H manufacturer whi start making them in US), so they need some time to gain some experience with this steel.

I also noticed tiny click sound when I close the blade, it did not bother me at all - now it is gone anyway.

What will be next?

Thanks, Vassili.

It'll be a few days before I get mine, but I'm giddy with anticipation. I always liked my rainbow Leek but my biggest complaint was the mediocre 440A steel, and was always wanting a "premium" Leek (and one that didn't cost way too much like CK&T's Random Leek). Then they came out with the G10/S30V Leeks, which I was this close to buying one but I was a bit apprehensive about a linerlock. But then Thomas hinted at the Ti/ZDP Leek. I would have been happy with a framelock S30V with stainless steel handles. But titanium and ZDP-189 is like hoping for a Timex and getting a Rolex. $125 (from newgraham) is a freaking bargin for this kind of knife with these materials. This should make for one heck of a pocket scalpel.

Also finally ordered that smurf bone Yojimbo I've been hankering for. I can't wait.
