Here is a sketch of a knife that Russ is making for me.

scan1.jpg

The first image is of the L6 forged from round bar that will be the core of the laminated blade.

This one shows two billets. The upper is 90 layers of 1084 & 15N20. It will be welded and drawn once more, and will become the guard, ferrule, sub-hilt, and cap on my bowie. Once the count is up to 180, it will be cut lengthwise, then each piece will be twisted (opposing),then welded back together.

The lower billet is one of two forged from O1 and 15N20 which will be the outer layers of the blade.

Sheesh........you are just overcomplicating poor Russ' life aren't you? I hope he is charging you a kings ransom.....lol:p

You should see the next knife we have in the works. Oh yeah, you will.
If that subhilt he submitted for MS judging is any indication, this next one should be quite a piece of blade art:thumbup: I would say that I have stolen some great ideas from Russ, but that wound't be entirely true........you can't steal what you don't understand, so I had to ask him how he does those things and of course, he was happy to tell me.

Holey crap, that's going to be a beutiful knife!! :D

Subhilts are one of my favorite patterns. I'm sure it will be an awesome knife based on the sketch and maker.

Can't wait to see this project unfold.

If I may offer a small suggestion, the sub-hilt "trigger" seems as thought it could be moved slightly closer to the guard to be a little more symmetrical with the overall. Or even better, shorten the overall handle length by slightly reducing the space between the trigger and guard. Of course, I could be wrong.

Was Russ's Blade Show sub-hilt Bowie professionally photographed?
Sure would like to see the photo if it was.

B&B....Got it..!

Kevin. You're correct, and the sub-hilt will be a bit closer to the guard.
I use a ratio of a little less than 1:4 for spacing on the knife.

It hasn't been profasionally photographed as the client is an
excellent photographer, and plans ( I think) to do that.

Great design. Great maker. Look forward to another in-progress. Loved Russ' MS subhilt.

180 layer billet of 1084 & 15N20 for use in making furnature for the subhilt.

Cleaned up & laid out for lengthwise cut on bandsaw.

Cut into two 5/8" square bars for twisting.

Counter twisted, and forged back to square.

Keith, I can not wait to see the finished knife!!

I LOVE threads like these!! Keep those pix coming!!

The best thing about subhilts is the way that Loveless designed the transition....it makes the whole thing perfect.....

1. The subtle roundness of the hilt and subhilt, not too curved, not too straight.

2. The little lugs on the guard....which many makers just usually ignore.

Now, I am not suggesting a straight copy at all...Russ does things his way, and this is a hidden tang knife he is making, but there are still things to be gained from Loveless' design without slavishly copying him....and again, this is just MY opinion.

See pic for reference:

I would ignore the lugs too, but then again, I wouldn't dare try the double edge hollow grind at this point either. albeit for reasons of competence:D Bob Loveless at his finest and the market reflects that fact:thumbup:
