Thanks, Bailey....this year we just decided...
We're gonna do it......period..!.....and it really was
a "WE" effort.
Actually, what happened was that Russ had to file down that entire MS dagger from a big billet with jewelers files, so it took him 8 years to finish it;)

I admire Russ's skill. Though I feel like I live under a rock, i can see his ideas of aesthetic, proportion, and exactness are worthy of much acclaim. Very nice Keith! Congratulations. Thanks for letting us share in the process.

...A little different angle of the blade finish...
and the guard ...

This has been a real treat! Look forward to seeing the final images on this. Really liking this one Russ & Keith.

The guard, sub-hilt, handle sections, and cap are fitted to the tang and to each other. All will be shaped ...slowly, due to temp sensitivity of the ivory, then the handle sections will be inletted, and the ferrules fitted to each end of both sections.

By the way, the handle material is the tapioca looking secondary dentine layer of some gold/orange coloured walrus ivory.

The recesses being cut for the ferrules.

The four ferrule recesses are now cutcut and assembled for checking.

The first ferrule is filed out and fit to front of the first section.

All parts assembled temporarily. They'll be filed/sanded to final shape, then buffed or etched prior to final assembly.

Cool project Russ. Thanks for the trick on the recessess for the ferrels. Cant wait to see it finished.

Keith, I think this ivory is going to make a super looking handle on this. It would be my preference, but you were originally thinking stag. Was wondering when you and Russ made the change?

This is looking to be awesome, to say the least.

Appreciate all that is being shared.

Interesting thread! It's going to be a fine knife!

Kind regards,

I purchased a huge piece of walrus ivory from Dan Westlind and few months ago. It was originally sent to Nick Wheeler to see if he wanted to use it on a knife he is making for me, but he wasn't confident he could cut it in a way that would properly utilize all the ivory. I had him send it to Russ. Russ liked it and figured he could cut it in a way that would give him enough for this knife and the next one he is making for me. That's when the decision was made to go ahead with ivory instead of stag.

I like this knife a lot but what it really sets it apart for me is this ivory:thumbup::cool:
