My poor Chloe

thats a brutal looking wound. i feel your pain though! i have an appointment today for round three with foxtails. first two were ear and then nose with one pup ($1000 total), now there is an open cyst in the paw of the other which looks to be a foxtail making its way up her paw :(

poor pup, poor wallet :(

Ttd- now its time to smash faces w baseball bats :D

Onado- they'll put her on abx. Just like a person as a precaution.

Cn- what's wrong w your pups? Idk what that is.

Mrs. Shotty (and others) I also feel for the pain you are experiencing, like a family member being in agony. Rest assured that a canines immune system is far more resilient then that of a human being. Like Onado2000's response implies, even after some time, it looks like a clean cut, no discolouration, no bugs, no whatever. Together with Chloë not showing too obvious signs of being hurt, the place of the wound (just in front of the shoulder, which would still make it flesh/muscle tissue beneath skin) tends me to believe that she had things under control (is she able to lick the wound?) and wasn't in too much pain. Nevertheless, it's a good thing you took her to the vet when you did.
On a different note, perhaps she was chasing/fighting that possum thing that has been bugging your garden lately. I understand that possums have impressive fangs and teeth to make a stand with, but a good sized dog like your Chloë, hell bent on defending/protecting her family or territory is a worthy adversary for anything incoming.

Just my thinking getting away with me here...

Good luck!!!

Thanks,

D-R

yeah Mr. Jingle Balls is definately on my list of possiblities. him and those f'ers that live behind us......i can't find anything in the yard that has hair or blood on it.:(

when i hear from the vet I'll have a better idea of what got her and will further investigate the yard. I should hear soon. It really shouldn't take them long to fix it up. They had a staff meeting this afternoon then she was first on the list for after the meeting.

I'm another member of the $1035 dollar pound mutt owners club. The Fuzz jumped out of a moving truck and tore herself up badly. It took a couple of weeks for her to be able to move around with out pain and whatnot. There were lots of peroxide baths and doggy tylenols mixed with other meds to get her patched up.

I hope your pup gets better soon. Give her a treat from me.....:D

Holy Hell Mrs Shotgunner!

...interesting though...I would have expected a wound like that to bleed more.

the seeds of a seasonal grass that are prominent on the west coast and are very dangerous to dogs. when they pierce the skin or get into the ears, eyes, nose or genitals they work their way in and can not be backed out. when they dry they catch the wind pretty good and get everywhere.

when they get under the skin they work their way through the body surrounded by a pocket of puss. foxtails that have entered the paws have been found to make their way all the way to a dogs heart if it made it into a vein.

this year they were really bad :(

My wife is a animal nut, and she says that if you can't get her to the vet soon, a little of powdered alum may help draw the wound together. We are all animal lovers in my house. Years ago when our health was better, we chinchillas, guinea pigs, hamsters, jirds, lizards(my babies) and a white rat. At one count we had 23 different animals. My wife and kids used to take all our animals to the public library for a show and tell.:D

sounds like a damn petting zoo! lol i was going to get sugar gliders but the mr said no.:(

Well, the vet just called and Chee-lo is all put back together again. No idea what did it but she needed to remove some flesh from around the wound because it was very inflamed.

I can't believe I didn't see that massive gash, that dog rarely leaves my side.

I feel like such a turd.:(

Looks worse than it is I'm sure.

The reason you guys didn't notice the wound is that Chloe is a dog and therefore tough--she probably wasn't complaining a lot. You and I would be calling for Air Evac; Chloe was probably thinking about finding a ball to chase. Gotta love dogs.

Too bad Chloe doesn't have a story to go with the scar. Hope she recovers quick.

Actually, it's bright red and looks very healthy and not nasty at all. I grew up in a bad neighborhood. I can remember seeing dogs with a chain, the twisted link shit that used to be popular in the 70s for chaining dogs up, except there was no collar, just the chain wrapped around and a small Master lock on it. Grown into the skin of the neck of the dog. I cannot own a dog or a cat because my wife and son are allergic to them, but I really like dogs and cats a lot and I hate to see that sort of mistreatment. I've known a lot of people that wouldn't have figured out something was wrong until the maggots were falling off on the carpet, you did a great job. That wound looks easily sutured, looks like it might have to be pulled taut but she looks like she will be fine after a few days.

Well if you didn't notice than she must have been acting normal right? It just means you have one tough dog.

Wow sorry to hear that. It sounds like she is in good hands and kudos to you for caring for your dog so well.

Glad to hear she will be ok.
Not to hijack the thread but this happened last week in a Portland Or suburb and it may make you watch you dogs more closely.

Take care of your pups. There are crazy people out there.
