personally, if you buy an animal because "its' cool" and dump it later, .... i have unpolite words for you.
Yea i didnt even know what doge was until after i got the pup, And for the people that dump their pets i have more than words for them.
I decided on this breed for several reason really. We are only allowed smaller breed dogs in the house im renting, and i honestly dont care for most small breeds because they bark a lot, want to be held constantly, and just look funny in my opinion.
But i have always LOVED akitas, and my wife's favorite breeds are huskies and malamutes. But these are of course large breeds.
Then we seen a few Shiba Inu dogs several months back at a state park, and me and the wife loved how they looked and how they played so i went up to the man walking them and asked what type of dog they were, and he told me, then he went on to tell me its an independent breed and they act a lot like cats, they clean themselves and are easily potty trained because they dont like to soil their living area. he also told me they didnt bark much or like constant attention or affection. And that sounds PERFECT for us. So i came home and looked them up online and later found a shiba inu forum, and have been reading the info there and looking for the right puppy every since.
When you get a puppy the entire family is excited because it's a puppy, but when the "puppy" wears off i have found im normally the only one left paying any attention to the dog, and having one that NEEDS constant attention would honestly just be aggravating.
The down side of being independent is they are not easily trained and will disobey their owners when they see fit, no matter their training... They still will do what they want. And this can be a real issue for some owners. Potty training is the only easy training task and thats only because its in the dogs best interest, it doesnt want to soil where it lives, but basic training like leash walking, coming and sitting, can be a headache from what i have read. And i am learning it more everyday. He walks great on a leash until he sees something he wants. He only comes when i call him if im holding something he wants. Really its all about what he wants.
But i can tell he is smart, just stubborn. If i put a bit of peanut butter on my finger and let him smell it first he will come and sit down for me. But if i dont have any peanut butter the little a-hole just stares at me with the craziest looks and doesnt move an inch.
But all in all he is a great puppy, and we are loving him here. I wouldnt be getting pet insurance already if i wasnt planning on keeping him forevers. He is sleeping on my lap now with his adoarable self.
