My Spyderco Delica 4 FFG

Harronek--that bitter HAP40 accident turned out to be sweet!

Jazzz--that wharncliffe is great! Sal & Co are incredible that they listen and act on customer ideas!

Humint--add Sage 5 to your list and those are the 3 I am hotly anticipating.

It has now been nearly 2 weeks since I began carrying and using the "Lil' Para" and I have formulated some opinions vs the standard Delica. For those of you that have read the book Animal Farm by George Orwell you will remember the reference made by the pigs: "all animals are equal, some are just more equal than others."

Well, I feel nearly the same about the Lil' Para vs the Delica. They are so close, but I feel the standard Delica is "just more equal" than the Lil' Para mod.

For reference, here are a few of the cutting tasks performed with the Lil' Para (in addition to the ones already pictured/mentioned):

Preparing tinder/kindling for a Scout activity with my son and his Scout Patrol:

Cutting up some fruit for a snack for my European Doberman, Piper:

Say "hi" to Piper:

In addition, I have used the knife to cut up boxes, slice flaps from cardboard boxes, cut open a bottle of threadlocker, cut zip ties, sliced a delicious entree of steak wrapped asparagus my beautiful wife made for me, and on, and on, and on of a plethora of other mundane tasks we all use our EDC's for.

So, what were the reasons i feel the Delica still retains its title as Pocket King? Mostly subjective to my own needs and tastes, but here are a few:
>grip--when holding the grip in standard hold the fingers are just a little lacking in sufficient room and the pinky ends up getting a little short on space.
>choil--the choil itself is sweet and a great feature to this knife, but when not using the choil the grip is just a touch further back from the pivot than it is on the Delica and this makes it feel a little less comfortable for me.
>butt protrusion (sounds odd)--when pocketed it feels like there is a bit more real estate of the butt end exposed outside the pocket. It isn't poking further out, but the overall cubic space protruding is just slightly more than the Delica and thus making it feel less discreet.
>G10 vs FRN--FRN wins out on this one. It has a softer feel without giving up any traction due to the bi-directional texturing. The G10 has a great feel in hand too, but I just prefer the FRN. Also, the FRN doesn't tend to shred a pocket as quickly as the G10 does.

Overall, the Lil' Para will retain a spot in my EDC rotation as it is a quality crafted mod, but at this point it will not be taking over the Delicas role as my Pocket King.

I want to give a shout out to BOOMER52 for making a quality product at a great price with EXCEPTIONAL customer service.

Very interesting thoughts. The FRN is one of my favorite things about the Delica!

I feel like we need a sticky called "I love my Delica". You stating how a $65 knife competes with a $400 knife for pocket time should really show the naysayers the excellence that Spyderco is producing. One suggestion I have is if you love the CRK's so much trying out a Sage 2. Ti frame lock just like the CRK but add the awesomeness of a Spydie hole, thumb ramp and finger choil. Welcome to the Spyderco addiction and I look forward to more discussion with you about a truly amazing knife company

My $65 Delica is competing hard with my $250 Benchmade AFO 2

As a lover of the Delica's handle shape I have been holding my breath waiting to hear your thoughts on the para handle .
I worried that you would get tempted over to the dark shadowy underworld of the choil .
I'm pleased to see you have returned to the real world
I think maybe it might be time for you to dabble with different blade steel - ZDP189 - Hap40 .
One of my he great features of the Delica and it's close relatives is the option of different steels at a very low entry price .
You know you like the handle , now find the steel that suits you .

PS- carrying my Kahr today .

Agreed!

They are definitely born to compete!

Ken--I actually do have a Super Blue Delica, a HAP40 Delica, and a ZDP-189 Delica. I have only carried the SB, but never put it to use. I have not carried/used the other two. I have had so much pleasure using the VG-10 that I haven't an urgency or need to carry/use the others.

However,

In my next installment of "Pocket Kings" I will be using/carrying/testing this bad boy and so will have a taste of the ZDP-189 action:

Can't wait to hear more of your thoughts.

I am waiting for the next contender to show up in the mail. . . . I will carry it for a week and stack it up against the Delica.

I see you are selling the Lil Para and D4 ZDP, anything changed??

Nothing has changed my friend--I decided against selling the Lil' Para and it is in my pocket as we speak. I had an itch for a blade to stack up against the Delica (the one that is coming in the mail) and I needed funds so I posted 3 for sale: a black PM2, a ZDP-189 Delica, and the Lil' Para. The PM2 sold and the Delica sold and that covered what I needed so I kept the Lil' Para (and I am glad I did as it is not as easily replaced as a production PM2 or ZDP Delica).

I will post some thoughts on the short-lived battle with the Caly 3 in just a bit. . . .

MMAR, Have you tried a Mantra (1) yet? I just received one and it's very Delica-esque.

Yes, I tried the Mantra 1 and posted some of my thoughts and use pics in this thread--it's somewhere in there! Bottom line for me was that it is a GREAT knife, but me and flippers are simply not compatible.

Situation report please :)

Ken

There seems to be a recurring theme amongst every single one of these comparisons--there has not been a single "bad" knife. Every Spyderco I have used and carried has been quality made, reliable, sharp, and a great knife. The difference every time has just been personal preference on size, shape, materials, length, color, etc. That is saying a lot about Spyderco--they make great products and have SOMETHING for EVERYONE!

On to the Caly 3--this one will be no exception to the above-statement. Great knife, but just not for me.
Here are a few pros:
>beautiful looking, elegant design, clean lines
>excellent blade shape
>sits at a perfect height in the pocket
>comfortable grip with forward choil

cons (for me):
>the CF is slick--nothing of an issue in my uses, but I would prefer a grippier texture
>grip--the grip is comfortable when using the choil, but that's the only choice--it cannot be held appropriately using the handle and not the choil
>Clad steel scratches easily (see pics below)
>Blade seat in handle--the tip of the blade sits either AT or JUST below the handle scale causing a potential snag when knife is closed. I wish it sat just a little deeper. If you run your finger along the handle and the "meat" of your finger sinks in a little it could snag on the tip. Not likely, but it annoyed me a little.

Bottom line: great knife, just not for me and it could not beat out the Delica.

What's that you ask? What is the next Spyderco in the lineup to go head-to-head with the Delica? Well, let me quell your fears and satiate your desires by telling you that the next blade will be the venerable, popular, ubiquitous, beautiful SAGE 1. Stay tuned. . .

Love this thread. Thanks for testing all these out and sharing your thoughts!

^ I agree! This has been a great thread.

MMAR, I just read through the entire thread and noticed that you also have Delicas with "upgraded" steels (SB, HAP40, ZDP). Have you had the opportunity to use these other steels? I'd be interested to know what you think of them compared to VG10. VG10 seems to work very well for my needs. I have knives with a wide variety of steels but, quite honestly, they could all be VG10 and I think I'd be perfectly happy.

Now this will be awesome.

Do we know of any more sprints or exclusive delicas coming up?

Here's my little blue one, gifted from a fellow member.

I'd never owned one. Just never would pull the trigger. I've carried it almost exclusively since it arrived.

@Sharp Guy,

I'd say VG10 is perfectly fine. ZDP, HAP40 & SuperBlue are definitely having higher edge retention, but sharpening them especially if reprofiling will also take longer. The list is in the order of sharpening time, ZDP being most challenging.
I have Enduras in those steels.

If one likes to keep the top sharpness always, frequently touching up is needed, regardless of steel.
There's a lot of discussion about the benefits of medium wear resistance, easy to touch up & higher wear resistance against longer to sharpen. I'd suggest to try them out, as we all are different in usage, sharpening ability and having different sharpening tools. It's fun to explore, but as MMAR shared in this thread, VG10 is perfectly ok.

I've actually found HAP40 at least equal if not easier to touch up than VG-10, while at the same time having considerably better edge retention.

Of course that might just be because the edge on the HAP40 isn't as degraded at the time of touch up.
