My thoughts on a Chris Reeve verses a Rick Hinderer

I've only handled one strider. It was several years ago and was supposedly a custom for around $500. I remember it was signed by someone. For that price I was quite disappointed in it. It sounds like they've gotten better, but from what I've seen they aren't even in close to being in the same category as crk or hinderer.

I've read, more than once that the new Striders (Gen 7) have an excellent lock interface and fit & finish too. Only thing I don't like is there's no liner on the non-lock side. Kinda cheap touch imo, otherwise I like their designs.

You know, I can't get over that either. I am reluctant to buy any knife with g10 without a liner, regardless of price. Especially if that price is $300+!

From what I understand, Hinderer favors the servicemen, they take priority, and offers them his actual retail price - that's the way it ought to be with any manufacturer.

More likely to pick up a Kershaw or 110 from Wally World. Heck, I'm sure that carpenter's knife does a fine job too.

The point I was trying to make is that typically from my own experience and the experiences I've witnessed from others is that a hinderer is for heavier duty dirty work and sebenza is more useful in a professional office setting opening letters, food prep, opening boxes etc.

Look at the designs and the thickness of the blades...

Does this still offend you sir?

For arguing price. They are both very similar in price when ordering direct. It's a shame how jacked up the price of hinderer gets on the secondary market. Great for the seller but sucks for anyone looking to purchase.

A liner would not work well IMO with a Strider folder. They do not use stand offs. The G10 is a solid piece to the lock face side. I have never heard of the handle failing. G10 is tuff stuff.Striders still have their minor problems, but they are easily fixed with a little know how-there are some tricks.The fit and finish on the Striders is pretty good(certainly no problem to me), but it isn't CRK good. Fit and finish has never been what Strider was about.They were made for hard use and nothing pleases them more than seeing a user beat the snot out of them in hard use(not ridiculous stuff like cutting down oaks and beating with rocks).

Ah-hah, very good observations. I never considered the handle configuration. :thumbup:.
 
Sebenzas are hard use folders. In the past few years I reckon there have been designs that claim (and seem to offer the potential for) harder use.

I am a WFR (Wilderness First Responder) & my GF is an EMT. I could surely pick up a hinderer with no funny business for less than most of my CRK/Striders. But I don't want to. I don't like the specs or the designs.

I do have a conundrum though. I won't carry my Spydie Military because I feel "under knived" but I have zero desire to buy one of the über bombproof knives like ZTs or Direwear Carillo, Hinderer, ect. The Slicer grind does pique a small amount of my attention, but these knives overall don't do much for me.

I like my knives clean and minimal. CRK & Strider do it very well... & My Shirogorov is incredible!
 
Over time, I've grown to respect the integral backspacer design of the Strider PT/SnG/SMF.
It has actually became one of the my favorite design features of the knife.

Strong and simple. I love it. :D
 
I have had all three, strider , hinderer and Crk. All rock

Striders are the toughest knives bar none. And I used mine for some ridiculous non cutting tasks in astan and it was wonderful. The fact it doesn't have metal liner on the g10 side means nothing

Their warranty is absolutely the best if you like to get crazy with your knife and use it like there is no tomorrow

All three companies make amazing knives and have great warranties and I would trust my life to any of them

Good morning to all.

As I read over recent posts I'm seeing some of our service folks chiming in, and I would like to thank all of them for their service and sacrifices.

As for the topic at hand. This whole thing is kind of feeling like the debates that pop up about EDC firearms.

Some love auto, others wheel guns. Then in each category, you get the caliber vs. capacity conversation, and steel-frame love or polymer love and of course the opposite of love for each, for example.

It's a matter of personal preference on all these items in question.

The knives by Hinderer, CRK, and Strider are are excellent folding knives. I would not be proud to own my knives by these makers if I believed differently.

And I believe it's a very good thing that some are not fans of one model's design or features. It leaves more on the market for those of us (that like them).
 
On the unlined G10 thing... It's not a problem, at all.

There is a video on YouTube of Cutlerylover intentionally trying to break a Cold Steel (recon?) by prying with it. He was actually testing this very theory, that unlined scales were weak.

Guess what happened? The steel blade snapped at the pivot before the G10 even came close to breaking. That's a testament to just how strong the stuff is, especially when it's a thick slab like Strider uses.

I take it you don't know many infantrymen?

I know many soldiers who pay top dollar for knives and don't think twice about it. Most of them are guys who's base pay is under 20k/year, mind you. Price is almost not an issue when you know you can pay up once and eat ramen for a while and then never worry about it again. Especially when deployed to places where a replacement could take weeks to get to you.

I think if Rick could sell his knives cheaper to us military folks, he would. I'm grateful that he makes the effort to serve our needs.

CRK makes a nice knife, I just can't afford $400 for something I know I'm not supposed to beat on.
