The price is all about supply and demand. Ricks is basically a one man shop plus help(no disrespect meant to the help). His production knives are considered mid tech, semi custom-you pick the term, but they have all the same parts as his custom except the blade grind is done by someone else. Each is sharpened by Rick.He has added products over the years-more sizes and a second grind, so this lowers the amount of knives of any one model. With the help he has been able to increase the production, but demand has moved even faster. The demand determines how much mark up will be tolerated. In the case of the 3" slicer the price has dropped slightly from when they 1st came out, but it could be awhile before he makes more.I agree the secondary price has gotten a bit out of hand
and you could have gotten a 3" for $500-$600 just a year and 1/2 ago. It is only worth the money if you like the knife.
C.R. runs a different type shop and has achieved a production knife that is second to none. He can produce many more knives than Rick, so even though they have great demand it has not outstripped supply(although it has tightened supply over the years-dealers stock has shrunk over the years). You can also order direct from him at any time.
Both great knives
