My thoughts on a Chris Reeve verses a Rick Hinderer

Look guys I was not complaining about cost as much. You could buy a crk with BG42 blade for more than when it was new. I wasn't even talking about hard use. All I was talking about was quality for what you pay for. If I paid 400.00 for the knife I would say is a good deal. The after market has exploited this product like the oil companies exploit gas. Hinderer is a good company I just think after 25 years he could make them more available. Yes it's true I favor CRK, only for the quality.

It doesn't matter how much it costs, it matters what you like. I'm loaded and have a lot of CRKs and ZERO Hinderers, I know that Hinderers are great knives, extremely well spoken for and reviewed, I JUST DON'T LIKE THEM!!!

...So let's go ahead and quit the penis jousting fellas before the thread gets locked.

Look Tim616, it's never a good idea to post when you're drunk or buzzed up. (just don't mention it guy)

For you who don't know what a Hinderer costs or feel like they're off the chart, a plain jane Sebenza costs more. Also a Dad or the family can buy one for his son in the Military - happens all the time if you follow Rick's forum. When you get up to Sebenzas and Hinderers, Rick's pricing is very fair IMO.

I'm not sure if CRK puts out a full on custom like Rick does but I'm sure someone will let me know if he does. Rick's price for a hand ground custom is cheap when compared to other makers on this forum.

I love where this thread went right when it got here!!!!!! What a cutie! Is he your avatar fella too, just grown up?

He's a cutie for sure but not mine, I swiped the pic from the web on account of the soothing nature of cute cat pics. The cat in the avatar however is Onion, one of my cats.

That's it guys, you've forced me to use the super cute kitten pic...

Love it!

The price is all about supply and demand. Ricks is basically a one man shop plus help(no disrespect meant to the help). His production knives are considerd mid tech, semi custom-you pick the term, but they have all the same parts as his custom except the blade grind is done by someone else. Each is sharpened by Rick.He has added products over the years-more sizes and a second grind, so this lowers the amount of knives of any one model. With the help he has been able to increase the production, but demand has moved even faster. The demand determines how much mark up will be tolerated. In the case of the 3" slicer the price has dropped slightly from when they 1st came out, but it could be awhile before he makes more.I agree the secondary price has gotten a bit out of hand
and you could have gotten a 3" for $500-$600 just a year and 1/2 ago. It is only worth the money if you like the knife.
C.R. runs a different type shop and has achieved a production knife that is second to none. He can produce many more knives than Rick, so even though they have great demand it has not outstripped supply(although it has tightened supply over the years-dealers stock has shrunk over the years). You can also order direct from him at any time.
Both great knives and both a have great resale market

Both great knives

no disrespect taken, there are some things you had mentioned that I did not know, I do think the Hinderer is a great knife. I think that it comes down to preference. I did not mean to offendfened anyone over this thread. I was only giving my thoughts and preference on what I think. I have carried sebenzas for many years, I have bought sold tried other knives and always ended up back with the sebenza. I have not yet had the opportunity to own a unumm. yet and I think that would be a better comparison. a knife is a tool and you would not use a pair of scissorsisors to tighten a bolt. The xm would be a good choice for someone in law enforcement and fire department. but I think for camping and everyday task the CR would be a good choice. Now guys this is just my preference. I would like to custom hinderer only because I enjoy the hollow grind profile, and I think that he should consider making a standard production at this profile. The sebenza has been a good knife for me, and not to be mistaken for a gent knife. No I have not pryied a door open, but I have been very hard on a sebenza and it has never failed me. I will say that the sebenza seems more solid to me. I would love to have a custom CR. I do think in the future I will own another Hinderer, but on the custom level. Dealing with CRK customer service is great, talking about you Heather. I have never had any problems with them. I do think that the detail is greater in a CR, but that is my opinion. One thing that I do like about the Hinderer would be the flipper, this is a fast knife deployment and the finger toil protects your hand cutting on the blade. So I did not want to open a can of worms, just giving you my views on the knife.

Cofade, and congratulations on finding the knife you like. I totally agree with you that the Sebenza is a great knife (I am carrying one now) and really the only knife anyone would need(although we always need one more knife). I second that CR customer service is great, although Hinderer service is excellent also. I love my 3" slicer non-flipper XM also and will probably never sell it-every time I have sold an XM it has cost me more to buy another. The suprise to me this week is that I am starting to really take to my Lg Sebenza. I have always been a fan of the small(especially the micarta), but felt the Lg. was a little too big a blade and a touch too heavy fro my taste. That said I am really starting to enjoy the large.
CRK's, Hinderers Striders, Mayo's Fellhoelters, J W Smith's-you can never have too many flavors to at least try

Could you loan me some, just a few hundred? My laptop broke and I hate sitting in the office talking knives on my PC.

Better then a touch screen phone. Over a thousand posts on this thing, oh the frustration!

I post on here a lot with the Iphone.... sooo....much.........zoooming....in.....GAHHHH

My frustration is my big fat thumbs and autocorrect spelling. So much retyping :miserable:

What's this thread about again, how much better CRK is?:D

I've owned a XM-24 twice and sold them each time for a high end/rare CRK (mammoth). Hinderer certainly makes a hell of a bomb proof blade, but I just could get into carrying it. IMO, you can try every other knife in this price range, but it;s hard to beat the sexy sleekness in the pocket of a Sebenza. When I want beefy I just go to my SnG. I've re-discovered it lately. I managed to get one of the newer versions and the fit and finish has come a long way from the gen5 and 6's I've owned.
OK, I probably didn't contribute much to this discussion, except to further prove I'm CRK fanboy. Sorry.

That's a great picture of the cat.

I used to wonder why people got so heated in these types of threads. Sometimes you hear sides called fanboys. I always thought, its just a knife who really cares. Then I think I realized its not so much about the knives but more about each person defending their own personal beliefs and opinions. That makes sense. That's enough for some people to get ruffled I suppose.

In 50 years from now what will it really matter. This is a great place to pass some time, make some friends and BS via the internet.

Its really not awful if people are convinced of different things.

Kevin
