My top five questions I ask myself before choosing a knife

Does the knife have good ergonomics, blade steel, heat treatment, etc.?
Does the knife fill a void?
If not, is it really better than what I already own?
Is it better enough to justify the price?

Any one of these questions could stop the purchase but it is usually the knife's ergonomics that kills it. Price is next. Few knives are better enough than what I already to justify the difference in price.

To the OP, just curious what your top 3 steels are?

10 Will it baton? (Y/N)
20 If answer = "Y" then buy knife
else dontbuy knife

1. What problem am I trying to solve
2. Does it solve the problem better than what I already have
3. Does it solve the problem well enough to justify its cost
4. Is it legal (when can I carry it)
5. Do I like it

So this leaves me with some walking around knives, some hiking knives, and some salt water knives. Pretty good system for me.

I think we're being trolled by the OP, but he sure did a good job of getting the discussion started!

Like others have mentioned, by far the most important question is "how can I slip this one by the wife?" (she handles all the books).

If it looks interesting and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I'll buy it.
Not very many fit in that bracket any more.

I would own about 3 or 4 changes of clothes ... 2 pair of boots/shoes ... 3 or 4 firearms ... maybe 10 knives (including kitchen knives) ...

I would still be driving my 1978 Chevy Blazer ...

All of this. In fact, if I find the S.O.B I stupidly sold the '78 GMC Jimmy to, he may just make a profit selling it back.

I don't have to have a use for a knife. This Magnum Tanto IX in 3V is proof enough of that.

Mmmmm...?
1. Knafs is good
2. Should buy more Knafs
3. Use some of dem Knafs....some not..
4. HeY is thaT a Knaf...
5. No need to justify Knafs

1. It has to catch my eye 2. After researching it has to still be desirable. Steel, Build, and Ergonomics are factors 3. I make myself weight for 2 weeks to see if I still want it and have the cash. This process has saved me Hundreds of dollars over the past year but on the down side I don't have as many knives as I would like but I don't have any knives I dislike :D.

Am I going to pee myself?
If I pee and fart then should I just poo too?
If I don't poo now will I regret it later?
Did I wear my depends?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

If you just got out of the shower, just get right back in. Otherwise, it will mess up your whole day.

When you get dressed, don't forget your special snowflake knife that conforms to all the trends on your checklist.

I suggest 6 o'clock IDP (in depends) carry.

1. Do I like it?
2. Do I think it's a reasonable price?
3. Will my wife notice I've got a new knife?
4. If she notices, will she be upset that I spent the amount referenced in question #2?
5. If the answer to #4 is yes, can I leverage some purchase she made in the last few weeks to soften the blow?

See? Purchasing a knife is a great example of give-and-take in a healthy marriage.
